  1. Hhhhm... on PSP Launch Coverage · · Score: 4, Insightful

I don't know a single person who's even considering getting a PSP. Sure, we all agree it looks like a great little machine, but it seems that almost all it's selling features are just so... limited. The comment from the post is right on. Do I really need another Wipeout or Ridge Racer game? Wasn't I playing those on the first Playstation, like um, ten years ago?

I can play more music on a dedicated mp3 player, and for less money. A 4 gig iPod Mini costs 199, and this is 249 + another 119 or so for a gig of storage. That's not very good. I can also use an iPod for days before it dies, when a PSP will probably wear out in about five hours, which is shorter by far than your average work day.

Oh, but it can play movies! Yeah, but I'm not going out and buying the same movies I already own just in case I randomly want to watch them on a 4 inch screen (assuming they even come out), or spending the time to convert a movie to the MP4 format, then copy it to a huge memory stick, only to erase it again if I'd rather take something else on the go, well, that just seems like a pain in the ass to me.

So, I'm left with games, pretty much. Games that I played and got sick of ten. years. ago.

Or, Mr. Troll, you could encourage everyone to buy Xboxes and not purchase any software, mod them, and run Linux on them, or pirate games like all other Microsoft haters do. Which, of course, really just ends up costing more for those who don't give a shit about your personal agenda and just want to play some damn games. Some people have the same hatred of Sony's stranglehold on the gaming business that you have on Microsoft's, so maybe you can just look at it as one 'Monopoly' trying to battle against another 'Monopoly', which is...um, wait a minute!!...a competitive marketplace!

  8. Wha? on The Microsoft Keynote In Depth · · Score: 4, Insightful

Why the submitter didn't actually mention the cool parts of the presentation is beyond me.

In terms of the new XBox Live stuff, the most interesting parts are in reference to the Gamer Cards and Costom Playlists, which are to be available across ALL games, and not just some feature a sassy developer tacked on. Being able to compare yourself directly against another player, even across games, check someone's stats across all games, which games they own and play, which on'es they're good at, and how much time they spend playing are all cool features.

Then, add on top of that the fact that you'll be able to manage all your music from within any game, creating custom playlists and whatnot, and you've got the cool things that the Xbox does now taken up quite a few notches.

  9. In addition... on Gamespy Reveals Xbox Next Specs · · Score: 1

Specs, whatever. On the Xbox site today they released some screenshots of the upcoming interface for the Next-Generation Xbox Guide.

    Highlights include:

    • Gamer Cards Gamer Cards provide gamers with a quick look at key Xbox Live(TM) information. They let players instantly connect with people who have similar skills, interests and lifestyles.
    • Marketplace Browseable by game, by genre, and in a number of other ways, the Marketplace will provide a one-stop shop for consumers to acquire episodic content, new game levels, maps, weapons, vehicles, skins and new community-created content.
    • Micro-transactions Breaking down barriers of small-ticket online commerce, micro-transactions will allow developers and the gaming community to charge as little as they like for content they create and publish on Marketplace. Imagine players slapping down $.99 to buy a one-of-a-kind, fully tricked-out racing car to be the envy of their buddies.
    • Custom playlists This feature eliminates the need for developers to support custom music in games. The guide instantly connects players to their music so they can listen to their own tracks while playing all their favorite next-generation Xbox games.

My guess is that this kind of circumvents the whole hard drive issue, and also explains why they want all titles to be Live-enabled, so that players can acces music and game saves from their pcs, and possibly Xbox Live. On top of that, some of it looks pretty cool. Liked playing with a certain person? Check their profile, see what other games they play, how good they are, and how often. Check their slogan, and maybe they've got a link to their site/blog/whathaveyou. Personalizes the experience a lot more, letting you know better who you're playing with, instead of just looking at them as random cannon fodder.

I'm sure it's fine. I'm just saying the Xbox sticks are a little better. They're not shaped like mushrooms, and are indented to keep your thumb in them so it won't slip off, and have more 'feel' to them, if that makes any sense, as it they have tactile feedback, even though they really don't.

I won't call the PS1/2 Dual Shock bad, by any means, and it is a pretty good controller, but I still find the XBox controller far superior, particularly in terms of FPS and Driving games. Triggers equate to actual triggers and pedals, unlike the shoulder 'buttons' on the DS. Othewise, other than some size difference, I find that both are pretty functional, especially since they're pretty much the same aside from the analog sticks and triggers differences.

I think, while the whole 'segmented market' argument is somewhat valid, you've got to think about the fact that, if this is true, the harddrive will be released at the same time as the console, and not afterwards as an add-on, the type that's never faired particularly well. So, you go into a game store, or check ebgames.com, and you'll be contanstantly harassed, from day one to buy the damn thing by retarded EB employees.

Didn't we all read a little while ago, that when Bill Gates was asked about buying Nintendo, he said something in regards to "I haven't talked to them, but if the Nintendo President called me up, I'd definitely answer the phone". This doesn't seem like any additional news, besides the obivious assumption that Microsoft likes Nintendo, is in competition with Nintendo, and therefore, could theoretically, buy Nintendo to aid in competition with Sony. Yes, but that's not the actual question, remember? Authur and Ford got shipped to earth 2 billion years in the past along with all those B-Class citizens from another planet, who subsequently, caused the actual earth-men to die out, which would have lost the question forever. When Aurthur and Ford conduct an experiment, which basically involved Arthur playing blindfolded scrabble, the question that came out was indeed "what's six times nine", but then again, Arthur wasn't technically descended from creatures created for the actual experiment, so it doesn't really count.

Later, in Life, the Universe, and Everything, the come across Prak, who had too much truth serum and goes on to tell the Truth, the Whole Truth, and Nothing but the Truth, most of which has a lot to do with frogs. Later, when he stops laughing at Arthur enough to be able to answer a question, he notes that the answer and the question are mutually exclusive, in that no one person can know both the question and answer at the same time, and doing so would cause the universe to vanish and be replaced by something even stranger, if indeed it hadn't already happened.

Just so happens, I read that part last night. Anyway, 'what's six times nine' is not the actual question.

I'm too lazy to look for it, but there was a Slashdot story not too long ago about the AI behind Halo 2, which specifically dealt with the interaction with the environment (hiding behind objects, turning them over, jumping on top of them, etc.), and programming the AI specifically to recognize objects and where there location was, and what they could do with them. That has a lot to do with physics, in turn, me thinks.
