Well I guess that wouldn't work so well if the designers run the data they capture against some randomizer. It wouldn't be 1:1 representation of the data but who cares, this is all eye candy anyway. I guess I kind of defeated my own idea.
Now you just need a really good micrphone and a camera array along with some software to analyze the sound and images and revert that data back into packet data (or what ever they are representing) and you have a network sniffer.
Date 2012. In before: Enemies are now coating their missiles with silver and giving each of them a mirror polish, and China to build the great mirror of China.
This seems like a first for google (at least in my observation), specially since all the other services they offer are very broad. For example news.google.com gives news of all types, maps.google.com gives maps to the whole country. But this stands out since it focuses on a paticular group of people, soccer fans. Of course this could be simply because this is done jointly with Nike.
Then again, maybe they will do the same for football, tennis, videogames and so on and in no time everyone will be included. Special Searches comes in to mind when talking about paticular groups, but thats just search related, not service based.
If they start defacing websites for just a cartoon, imagine what they will do if it was a offending movie/act: take whole servers and backbones down? Oh the horror.
Serious note: Lets take a look at this situation.
Attack: Cartoon
Defense: Death threats, burn down buildings, deface websites, protests, and the list goes on.
Well to listen to slashdot, you could send it into a audio device. As root
wget -nv http://www.slashdot.org/ && cat index.html >/dev/audio
Or you could ghetto rig the machine to output the network dump such as from tcpdump directly to a audio device, not as nice music as the original post, but it will work.
With way too many players on the field, there's bound to be some kind of shakeout coming, right?
I don't think so. It will most likely turn out just like email, with thousands of providers that can connect to each other. In my opinion, this is a VoIP should be a service that should be handed out by the ISP's directly (pipe dream, I know)

I have to agree, this has been done over and over and over again. I saw a windowed hard disk in TXGF Austin 2004 and many tutorials online (just google now)
How much more can we beat this dead horse over Windows vs. Linux? I mean its probably beaten so much the chances that one would be able to put linux on it is now impossible. How sad.
Just moving the mouse to say top-left would push me to desktop in top left. Pressing SHIFT+ALT+(UP+LEFT) does the same in one hit. Its executed as two, but its one action for the user.
First find a good window manager (initially spend the time if you have some exploring gnome, kde, enlightenment, twm, fluxbox, *box, what ever). Find something you like from that. Simple is good. Bling Bling is bad. I personally choose enlightenment.
Multiple desktops! Use them. I have a 3x3 array setup with edge flipping so hitting the edge of the screen would push me to the adjacent desktop and have wrapping around. So within any desktop, I can access any other. Of course this is a personal preference. (I would imagine this taking someone a long time to get used to, but once you do its like gold). Create a convention on how you would use your desktops, for example the top row for work, middle for shells/web/information, middle last for email, and bottom row for shells. Something that you will feel good with.
Learn your shortcuts (either for window manager, editor, or what ever software your using). Things I find useful are scrolling through desktops, autocomplete, saving/copy/paste, locking computer, open applications, change music.
Personalize your enviornment and applications. Configuration files are there for a reason. Set up shortkut keys and use them. Of course when you are customizing it, do it only once (or twice) initially not everyday tweaking more than you edit your actual work.
If its a work computer, do not even think about installing games. And get rid of those bookmarks, my productivity shot up as soon as the slashdot and other bookmarks went away. Organize all the work related bookmarks in a way thats easiest for you.
Lot of other things I was planning to say are already written below. Enjoy.
harm the exchange of knowledge between researchers
Wait, so having it in a easier form to obtain and be searched would harm the exchange of knowledge? Well here is a easily solution for you: Pay the same amount (or less since no paper) so you can read the same stuff online.
By personal experience as a College Student who use wifi in almost every class, I don't think how I can go without it. I think it has greatly improved my learning experience since its like a library in front of you. For example, say your in a ethics class and they bring up the topic of some act or case, just google or use wikipedia to look it up. Your in physics and you need a quick reference or more graphics and illustrations on a certain theory, simple: just search it. If it wern't for the laptop/internet, I (or anyone) would ever bother to look that information up later.
And what about the times when the prof is going on and on about things that you have clear understanding, honestly everyone was just falls asleep or skips the class, or you can use that time to look up some information on the subject/topic the prof just talked about or is about to talk which is much more efficient use of the time while still keeping a ear open to see if anything interesting is said be the prof. This helped me understand the lectures and material much better (than those days when I don't take my laptop).
If you are playing games or surfing stupid websites that the students choice and you shouldn't blame wifi or laptops for that, the student is responsible. But if you just take wifi out of the class room, then all the students who use internet connection in class rooms are the ones who will suffer.
That or the users are faking their age

Oh GTA, what won't you take the blame for?

Only if they had Spamming as one of the events in the Olympics.
... and reading slashdot...
Fixed.

Conclusion: Overkill?
You pretty much mirrored what I came here to comment as well. Totally agreeing here.
Ok, somewhat weird commenting to my own post, but a comment http://www.janitha.com/archives/33#comment-70 says how to do this in a more crude way.

So I take its like placing a beta release in a production enviornment.
Kind of defeats the purpose of being "private" tracker once you post it on slashdot doesn it?

He already has the operating system set up... you should really read the post before replying.

Somebody get me my strawberry bag.
How long before this will be used for artwork? Designer Tissues. I can't wait for that day.
I want my tux logo printed this way.
