I don't think he is correct -- or at least we don't know. I mean, textedit in OS X can view word docs, so it's pretty likely that functionality will be there. Apple's supposed to be working on a good spreadsheet app, and that will certainly open Excel docs, so it's possible that functionality will make it to the phone too. That might take a while though, who knows. Plus with a full browser, iPhone users can head over to Google Docs and Spreadsheets for that stuff, and soon that will have a Powerpoint replacement as well.
Hi, I'm not the AC from before, but I also have never smoked marijuana (or otherwise ingested it) and I'm against its current legal status in the US. I do know some people who have smoked it, but most of my friends don't, and I really couldn't be considered immersed in any kind of pot culture (though I suppose I do listen to Reggae sometimes). In any case it seems doubtful that we'll have a rational discussion about it. This is Slashdot, after all.;)
I'm inclined to think that maybe this is a good thing. If no individual privacy is being trampled, then it's good for TiVo to have another revenue stream and a way to keep networks and advertisers happy, since generally the content providers have been working pretty hard to fight against DVR.
The article says that the object receiving power from these pads has to be equipped with a power-harvesting coil or some such. So I think it doesn't so much sense what's on it as just require the right kind of object to be placed on it.
I'm yet to be convinced that second-hand smoke harms anybody, except perhaps workers at restaurants and bars who *choose* to work there despite the smoke, in which case I don't think the government should swoop in and "save" them from themselves.
Oh right, I forgot that everyone always has the choice to have a different job than they currently have. No one ever gets stuck, unable to find a better job and unable to quit and live with no job.
I had a terrible problem with spammers on my forums (linked from sig). 3/4 of all the accounts were spam bots and I was cleaning up spam messages every day. I added a captcha like you describe that I found on some phpbb mod site, and the problem entirely disappeared. The anti-bot questions are shown randomly and there are maybe 15 or 20 of them. They do things like show a picture of several lines and ask how many of them are red. It also allows you to add new questions and pictures and soforth. Now, my site is just a podunk dinky little site, but so are the majority of the sites. By adding this, I've just made it not worth it to the spammers to use my site for spam.
There are lots of radio accessories you can get for the iPod, I imagine there's one that would do what you want. It's possible that Apple is trying not to harm the iPod accessory market (though they haven't always cared about that sort of thing) by building that in.
I would venture to say that video games are, or at least have the potential to be, more "art" than a lot of the things we call art nowadays. I think an important aspect of art really lies in the interactivity between the artist and the viewers. Art, at its core, is a communication medium. Artists use symbols and approximations and facsimilies to communicate ideas, emotions, thoughts, intents and all the sorts of things people like to communicate to each other. But whereas a painting is akin to a letter, a one-way communication, a video game is or can be akin to a real conversation or dialogue. Videogames are essentially technology allowing artists to take the communication of art to a new level, one which is truly interactive.
I'm kind of wondering if this was meant as a troll or what. Yes, plenty of articles have grammatical flubs and/or factual errors, but it's simply not true that any fixes you make to these will be immediately reverted. It's not even kind of true. I think what I would call it is "completely false."
According to an article in Wired this month, Sony is banking heavily on the success of the PS3 and overall is not doing very well. The article is online too, check it out here.
Technically, yes a Mac is a personal computer, but for well over a decade the term PC has been used to mean a non-Mac computer. It's the term that took over for "IBM Compatible" when that stopped making a lot of sense as a term.
I don't really get how people keep saying the Mac guy is so smug and thinks he's better. In pretty much all the commercials he is friendly and mostly humble about the ways he's better than the PC.
I agree with you, but I think Europe would probably sue them for including that stuff anyway.

Why is this so difficult to understand? Microsoft, because of their market position, is held to a different legal standard. End of story.
It's not difficult to understand; it's annoying because it's the wrong argument, and it really muddies the debate. We don't need to hold Microsoft and Apple to different standards to show that one is better than the other. There is nothing wrong with MS bundling software with their OS. What was wrong was that they were forcing companies like Dell NOT to include competing software (such as Netscape).
It's a moot point any way though, because in this case we aren't even talking about the right thing. As someone else mentioned, we're talking about a system that is built to resist viruses and such, not virus scanning software bundled with the OS.
I've never seen Radiohead live, but I'm wondering if their live shows consist of them playing the songs from an album in order or if, perhaps, they play songs from different albums in a somewhat random order. Anyone know?

Thats true I never thought about how difficult this one is going to be to operate while driving.
Holy hell, that's a GOOD thing as far as I'm concerned.

Um, rape is practically never a crime committed in pursuit of financial profit.
And those versions are coded to work with standard controllers as well as dance pads.
Yeah, but you can hardly expect that kind of thing to go on indefinitely.
There are all sorts of made-up facts about Darwin to be had, if you're into that sort of thing.

Google notes that the results you are getting have been censored when that is in fact the case, so no one is being misled.

I think the keynote said you can also backup to your .Mac account, so there is SOME option for off-site backup.
My site's pretty small but I have around 50% for Firefox.
What do you mean by viewing area? Do you know that you can move the buttons around and/or turn off bars you don't want on there?
Which they have quite a lot of in the Mojave desert.
