What about the speaking in this video? I think it adds a lot to the historical context and captures what was going through people's minds during the event.
The focus of this research is on long-term missions, where the silkworms would be part of a small ecosystem. Eating rations every day isn't as sustainable.
This is mob rule, democracy at it's finest, let's go back to a republic as this country was intended.
Dear Anonymous Coward,
Thank you for expressing your interest in this important issue! I appreciate all the letters and comments I receive from you and other subjects of our jurisdiction. As you may know, the topic of direct versus representative democracy is one that concerns me greatly, and my staff has been working hard to address the problem. You can rest assured that I will make a decision on your behalf that will result in the best possible outcome for me. Thanks again for your support, and remember to vote for Explodicle at the next election!
the duly elected President of the United States, which I have sworn to protect and Defend, in full accordance with the Constitution of the United States, which I have also sworn to protect and defend.
If the president and constitution are in conflict (torture, warrantless searches, etc) which one do you side with? Even if you don't think the president has done anything unconstitutional since you swore your oath, which one comes first?
Hover translucency is OK, I guess. I'd rather have my cursor to push an always-translucent notification away, or squish it against the side of the screen, or do something else that actually got it out of my way. And it should shake when it's something really important. And flash! Mandatory PC speaker sound effects! Rumble mouse support! A frowny face graphic that becomes more sinister as the problem becomes more severe! Insert the warning text into the music you're listening to as replacement lyrics! THOSE BASTARDS NEED TO KNOW THIS STUFF!!!!!
Aside from that, there's the personal - forcing aides to talk to him while he was talking a dump,
Damn right the guy was working while he was on the can! The president is one of the busiest and most important people in the world, and irrational taboos shouldn't stand in his way. This president may have been up to no good, but talking to someone while defacating is not something wrong on its own. It's a shame this aide had poop issues, but that's not LBJ's problem.
Did you ever note that politicians always say they'll have to cut the most inflammatory items - police, fire, libraries - first? How about their own salaries next time for starters?
IIRC, state senators in NY make about $100k a year. Even if they cut that in half, it would only be like %0.01 of the total state budget. I guess it helps, but their salaries are not really the biggest problem here.
Why would I care enough about 5% to let that pick my OS?
That depends on what you're using the computer for. Some people only care about how fast a particular application runs. In those cases, the choice of OS is factor, but not an an end unto itself.
Funding artists through taxes isn't that crazy an idea. I'm sure the conservatives here will mod me down, but the creation of art and science bring about a positive externality; funding the arts and sciences is beneficial to the entire market. I think such public funding would be more beneficial than the monopolies on ideas that the RIAA and SCO would like to perpetuate.
The RIAA doesn't want their proposal to be called a tax, for good reason. If everyone called this a tax, then people would start asking why the RIAA is in charge of levying taxes. The taxpayers would demand a say in where the money goes; we'd want to eliminate the middleman or at least choose a non-profit organization as the middleman. In a world where ideas are distributed freely whether or not we want them to be, taxation is a whole lot more enforcable than intellectual property. The recording industry sees this, and they're trying to transition to the new system while keeping themselves in a position of power.
Call me a socialist if you'd like, or complain that you don't want to fund someone else's idea of art, but what we've got now and what the RIAA is trying to create are a hell of a lot worse than taxes. I believe the taxpayer will see a significant return on their investment in the form of technological and cultural progress.
Considering the top limit for hyperthermophiles here on Earth is 250 degrees F, it's not just human life that couldn't survive there. If we're going to assume it's life unlike anything we've ever seen before, then why do you think the presence of water or CO2 will help?
The problem is that nerds are far too Libertarian, with a capital L. Forming a professional association to them would be tantamount to forming a union, and that would be sacrilege!
A software developer's professional organization could never develop into a union. Unions rely on establishing a labor monopoly for bargaining power, which cannot be attained in an international industry with no physical goods and no physical labor.
A doctor with an emergency who knows how to stand up and walk out when he gets a call?
As it is, the doctor is a strawman because compared to the non-necessary mobile phone action going on, he's rarer than Yeti.
The doctor example is not a straw man; the grandparent poster is not trying to describe someone else's claims in regards to doctors. Now, when he said:
That's a bit like banning alcohol to keep people from driving drunk.
That is a straw man argument, since it replaces someone's opinion with one that is superficially similar but easier to refute.
Good point, bong420! Your armchair engineer understanding of a device you just read about totally trumps my years of hands-on experience. What he's got there is a 6DOF input device (the position of his hand) and a few bytes he can express with his fingers. You get the exact same functionality with a spaceball, but without waving your arms all over the place.
In fact, all government employees' and officials' calls should be recorded and made available for everyone's listening pleasure...
It's our right to know what they're doing as part of their official duties. If the president wants a 15 minute break to talk to his wife with a phone he pays for out-of-pocket, then it's none of our business.
At work (I'm a design engineer) I use a spaceball for 3D navigation and a mouse for the 2D stuff. I don't need to put on some silly glove, it's cheap, and it all fits on a normal desk. I assure you, I could have done all of the operations they just performed in the video, but faster and more comfortably.

Wow! I hope I win that one!

Mine is in the vertical position so it will have more surface area exposed to air, reducing the overheating problems.
I get my internet (and just internet) from Speakeasy's OneLink service.
It's an education tax. The RIAA would never propose taxing their product.

If you've got an abundance of caps, send them to me so I can get that "My First Infirmary" I've had my eye on.
I should take out an ad for:
f'(x)=lim(h=0,(f(x)-f(x+h))/h)
That'll show the little bastards!
Cease all discusssion of public anything until we've settled the health care debate!
So long as they don't try to block encrypted proxies, I don't think that would be a big deal.
Damn double-jointed criminals!

You don't get it, do you. Each and every one of us is a p-zombie, devoid of conciousness. There's only one human left: Will Smith.
