Apparently Japan has invented a computer controlled holographic display? Isn't this the holy grail of 3D display technology? We can finally have 3D TV's without the glasses once this technology becomes widespread.
Does anyone know how they did this?
You know how you can drag your route around when you get driving directions on Google maps. I think it would be a neat idea if they tracked how users changed their routes, and then used that to improve their directions. People change routes to account for traffic, times of day, stop lights, closed roads, etc and Googles algorithm probably doesn't know about those things right now when generating directions. It really would revolutionize directions.
I gave this issue some thought tonight. If a quality MRI machine costs say $100 and weighs less than 10 pounds, what new technologies would we see?
I couldn't come up with very much. Maybe you can? Could you make a scanner that scans a whole book at once with an MRI, since it could take a 3D image of the insides of the book and then split it into pages with software? I guess it would have to detect locations where there is ink by looking for those molecules?
I've always wondered, could you use this technology for propulsion? Create an ion wind and push it behind you? Is it possible? Why hasn't it been done?
Has anyone sucessfully installed Ubuntu on a motherboard with this chipset? AFAIK I believe this is caused quote:
"due to the Intel P965 chipset has no more integrated IDE channel, thus the motherboard usually has an additional chip onboard for an IDE channel. In the current Gigabyte (I got one of them) and ASUS (think they have it too) this is a JMicron JMB363. Until very recently the kernel had a bug inside that made it unable to access the IDE/PATA channel. "
I put together page here to document the issue. https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Core_2_Duo_Support
There's probably enough money between all of us to buy a nice cruise ship, sail into international waters, and make our own good laws! The perfect, sensible country.
What do you guys say? Someone start the wiki to start planning this.
I've had this idea for a while. How about if I mined Ebay and used variables like postitive/negative feedback ratio, average value of good sold, number of years operating, and on and on, to predict the probability of an auction being a fraud.
Assuming this was possible, how could I make money with this? Does anyone want to partner with me? I'm pretty good with the machine learning stuff so I think it can be done.
I heard that they used the hubble to take pictures of the moon a few weeks ago including the apollo landing sites. But I can't find the hubble pictures of the apollo landing sites anywhere on NASA.gov. Can anyone help?
Here's an idea for a grammar checker, I believe it would be a version of a Markov chain.
Take a huge corpus of grammatically correct text, use it to generate tables of what words follow each other. Then check the user's text against the tables. If your text isn't in there, then warn user that it may not be gramatical.

P.S. Patent Pending...
(ha ha just kidding, patents aren't for software, silly rabbit)
This event makes me feel that my idea for a myth box company is more viable. Here's my idea:
Start a company that builds Myth boxes and sells them. If I buy the PC parts in bulk and standardize the hardware I use, then loading myth/linux onto each one would be simple.
I just don't know where to start. Could this sort of business make money?
IN FACT I'M RUNNING IT IN THE FUTURISTIC "CAPS LOCK" MODE...
however slashdot is not compabitile with this new technology. It gave me a "lameness filter" when I tried my orginal post, so I'm now running in regular mode.

Does anyone have an answer. I'd rather know than not know.
Does Jailkit eliminate all of these problems of chroot?
Yes'm but I rather meant ionizing the air around you and using that to propel yourself, instead of carrying your own store of ions as such.
I've always wondered, could you use this technology for propulsion? Create an ion wind and push it behind you? Is it possible? Why hasn't it been done?
Remember folks, the RIAA should be referenced by its members for maximum negative publicity to these companies.
So instead of RIAA say "Push Records, Philips, Virgin Commercial Marketing and other members of the RIAA"
Here's a handy bookmarklett that will randomly choose 3 members of the RIAA each time you want to talk about it.
And here's an article explaining the reasoning.

I haven't had mod points in years, but I reccomend modding this interesting, it should be brought to the attention of the people.
This article got me thinking:
If you can detect a gravity wave then doesn't that mean that some energy is being absorbed from it?
If energy can be absorbed from it, then doesn't it get weaker?
So if a gravity wave can be made weaker, then couldn't you theoretically build a gravity shield?
And if you scaled one up, could I stand on it and float off of the earth?
It doesn't seem right, so where am I going astray? Thanks Physicists!
They're aren't any pictures because there wasn't any moon landing. It's a conspiracy, man.

Of course it would be nice if we could all get an excuse not to use XML ...
Good point, though an order 1 markov chain would work for your example. With a really large body of grammatically correct text we may well see:
Octopuses eat
eat toast
toast on
on Ramadan
An order 1 system like this would a least find noun verb agreement e.g. flagging "I be" or "has ate".
Perhaps my system could be combined with a traditional grammer checker? I guess I should know how the grammer checkers currently work.
Here's an idea for a grammar checker, I believe it would be a version of a Markov chain.

What need less regulation, not more!
We can't look under the hood because the hood is sealed shut. Right?
