there's nothing illegal about banning users from your private system for what ever reason that you choose as long as you stop billing them. Also, it is probably written into the TOS that the users of this software must not modify it.

that would be very cool in theory, but bittorrent has an extremely high latency, where keyhole would really only be useful if that is kept to a minimum.
How do you propose that we handle that problem?

Also, if we wanted to keep a few gigs worth of data on our machines why not just download all of the maps? A DVD distro would be nice as long as it had web updates.

  3. Keyhole on Google Keyhole, Google Scholar · · Score: 1

After using keyhole I'll have to say that I was both impressed and disappointed. The things that impressed me the most about Keyhole were the fact that it had full color images of anywhere that I wanted to look(including my ranch in FL) and that it had a very elegant interface.
I was, however, disappointed with the speed at which these images were delivered to my desktop. The first 20 minutes that I used Keyhole I thought that it had a very limited high-res image base because everywhere that I tried to view came back very blurred. While browsing the software I had to take a call that lasted about 10 minutes, when I switched back to the keyhole application I was amazed to see a crisp clean image in front of me. I was on an OC-3, so it's not as if my connection would've caused a slowdown.
The Keyhole application definitely has a lot of potential, but if it continues to be so slow then I think I'll pass.
One of the more interesting features that was able to set Keyhole apart from other imaging services is that you can pan/tilt in "realtime" this was very cool because it enabled me to get a better view of what surrounded an area.
All in all it is a good product, but still needs to be polished a little. And the price per year is even fairly low.

I thought that the "Uncanny Valley" was very interesting too. I'm curious as to whether or not game designers are going to try and hide things from the players or start to develop AI that simulates NPCs at rest.

It would be very cool to have a game in which the NPCs would sit around and chat, or play cards when they think that they are idle. It would also be very cool to sneak up on a group that was enjoying social time. Imagine flying drinks and tables being knocked over when you start shooting them.

I'm not saying that it is legal to use pirated software, but unless some type of monetary loss can be proven by the company that produced that software prosecuting is a waste of time.

In the case of someone distributing 100's of copies of a software package a loss can be shown, but for someone to use the software to try it out doesn't show a significant loss to the company.

No more legal, but usually not an issue

It is very illegal to distribute files created by pirated software. Just having the software is not a problem, it's using the software to make money when you haven't compensated the developers.

If I were to use a pirated copy of Photoshop to create an image I would probably not be prosecuted when anyone found out, but if I were to sell that image or in some other way profit from it I would surely face legal reprocussions.

It's amazing that someone can sue b/c a character creatiion engine allows one to design a large character with green skin and pants.
I'll have to admit when I first started playing the game I made a DBZ character and there WERE a lot of wolverine clones out there, but none came anywhere close to the level of detail that Marvel characters have.
Also, if I'm not mistaken there are certain names that you cannot use even though there are no characters using them. One that comes to mind is "Lucky".
I hate that lawsuits like this are even allowed to see the light of day. Of course people playing a superhero themed game are going to create characters that remind them of superheroes that they are familiar with...people are too lazy to create their own, and to scared that someone might care think that their creation is stupid.
I hope that this lawsuit gets thrown out, or that Marvel at least loses. It's horrible that a company comes out with an innovative product that fill a request from the market(more differentiation in characters) and someone else decideds to sue.

I am personally going to boycott Marvel at least until this blows over.

I'm not proposing that we transmit the power long distances. That's the reason that I mentioned multiple sources. While solar power works well in temperate zones, it will not work well too close to the poles(ie: wisconsin, alaska, etc.)
With different types of generation being used in different climates we would be able to create a strong power grid. Also, by using many small power stations spread around the country we could keep power on in the case of any local catastrophe.
And these power stations would function much like the power stations we have in place today, by integrating a way to store power when too little can be generated.
There are many ways we can fulfill our needs for electricity, in coastal areas the motion of waves can be converted to electricity, in deserts we can use solar power, in the plains we can use wind, in the mountains we can build dams...the problem isn't finding a viable solution, but implementing that solution.
I am very much against an intrusive government, but I think that mandating a certain percentage of power come from "renewable" sources is a great catalyst for progress which any government should encourage.

What if we relocated nuclear power plants to places similar to Yucca mountain. Underground powerplant locations would prevent terrorist attacks, and the sites being out of view would eliminate a lot of the fear that comes with the power plants.

I personally think that we need to begin to rely of more natural technologies. The entire biomass(with some exceptions, i know) of our planet gets its "power" from the sun, I don't see why we don't take advantage of that more than we do.

In many of the tropical and sub-tropical regions there is more than enough sunlight to power the population.

In the areas closer to the poles wind seems to come in abundance.

I'd also like to see an increase in conservation. As new electricity consuming products are conceived we should be working on ways to reduce their consumption while maintaining their functionality.
