sudo su will just drop you into a root shell, but up until that point by forcing people to use sudo you gain a log of all the commands that they pass off with root privileges.
Unfortunately once someone gives the sudo su command all you see in the logs is an indication that some grabbed a root shell. I guess that it's a matter of personal preference, but I like the sudo method. I do login as root on occasion, but I like the extra warning that I might be breaking something with a chmod or mv.

I have a nextel that I usually place on my desk in front of my keyboard while I'm at the computer and it will cause crackles in my speakers as well as distortion in my monitor if I happen to be using a CRT. It's kinda cool because I know a second or two before I'm going to get a call or before someone will beep me.
It really makes me wonder if all those times I've pulled my phone out of my pocket for no reason and had it ring right away were because my body could pick up on the same interference. I also used to live across the street from one of the towers that broadcast the local radio station that I listened to and I would often get a song stuck in my head for a few seconds and then turn the radio on to hear that song. I don't know... maybe it's all just an attribution error on my part.

  9. If my ex could use it... on Super-ATMs Being Rolled Out · · Score: 3, Interesting

My ex girlfriend used to use the Vcom all the time, and she was almost entirely technologically illiterate. After she used it the first time she said that it was "fun", and that she "felt like someone from the future".
If she can use one, almost anyone should be able to use one. She'd go cash her payroll checks, which she would get on Saturday night after 6pm. If the check was ever less than $300 there was no fee. Plus there was the added benefit of the Slurpee that she would get me before she left the store.
I thought that there was no way the machine would pay for itself, but she insisted that there were lines at times.
I think that the idea is a good one, I think that people will use it, and I think that we will see machines such as this for a long time to come.

  11. Nextel on Homemade Cell Phone Call Blocker? · · Score: 1

My Nextel i830 can be restricted to only answer calls from numbers stored in my contacts list, but I'd never enable that feature because I often have people that I know call me from other numbers. I personally don't see a need to call block anyone, but if the same few numbers are calling over and over the silent ring would probably be best. Most phones allow you to store a few numbers for each contact so you could save space by combining the numbers that you wanted to have a silent ring into one contact.

  13. Not really defending the behavior, but on Germany Accepts Strict Piracy Law · · Score: 1

What if the users downloading the copyrighted material don't know that they are breaking the law. When someone goes into a shop and takes a pack of chewing gum it is painfully obvious that they are stealing. But when someone downloads something from the internet there isn't a mechanism in place to let them know that they are breaking the law.
Having a law that is so strict without giving the population time to become aware of the same protocols and same methods being used for both legal and illegal activity seems somewhat harsh. This law could cause legal downloads to be curbed sharply to.
Also, what if they download a version of the song that is copyrighted in the US, rather than the German version? Are they still violating any laws?

Perhaps someone else in this technocentric community we call /. has encountered the same problem and has a better solution than your "stay or go", if that's the case maybe he can form a solid base from which to maneuver around the problem and surpass it.
Personally I think the direct approach is always best, take some time to sit down with your bosses(off the clock) and discuss your views; maybe you'll find that your objection to patents has no solid basis and is just fueled by the general ideas expressed within the tech community, maybe you'll convince your bosses that patents are bad, maybe you'll come to a consensus and they'll allow you to work in a way that is comfortable, or maybe they'll tell you that you need to work within their rules.
Whatever the outcome, you'll never know until you open up dialog. Don't skate around the issue, have a spine and get right to it.
