I would also argue that American racing is no more corrupt from a doping standpoint than any other organized body. To think otherwise is naive, in my opinion.

I have to disagree. What make American racing unappealing to me is that it specifically allows doping like Lasix (and I think Bute in New York).

Don't get me wrong, I think that in any sport anywhere that involve lots of money there will always be someone that try to cheat. However, when the sports ruling body say that it is allowed to cheat (Lasix and Bute is listed in the racing programs), then I will put my money other places.

BTW. I actually did that. Some years ago I was betting on American racing for some months, but I walked away in disgust after seeing over and over that nearly all the horses on a card where running on Lasix.

I am now following the British National Hunt racing instead. They are probably not 100% clean either (no one is), but at least they make an effort. One thing however that make me believe it is cleaner is that jump racing is for older horses.

On the flat there are a lot of big races for 2- and 3 year olds, so the temptation to race an unsound animal under medication is much stronger there. One thing a bit special to America is that a so much racing is done on dirt, and there is a strong focus on timerecords. In Europe we do most racing on turf, and due to the differing tracks and going of the ground timerecords become a bit irrelevant (or at least hard to consider).

  8. Re:Obligatory Secretariat comment... on Equine Speedometers · · Score: 1

He was indeed special, but I find it difficult to be impressed by any American race results. The reason is that this country effectively legalise doping in it's racing.

Look up any racing program, and you will find that 90% (if not more) of the horses run on Lasix. One of the functions of Lasix is that it an be used to mask other chemicals. Now, how can you then trust that any results are won fair and square?

I don't know if still goes on, but I believe that racing in the state of New York it was allowed to race a horse on Bute. Bute is a painkiller. If you try race an injured horse it won't run, or it will run very badly. Using Bute the horse will not be so affected by the injury, and the trainer may squeeze a race or two more out of the horse. The horse should of course not be raced at all until it had got better!

On a side note; the horse that has impressed me most of all is Red Rum. He won The English Grand National three times and finished in second place two times. That is something that never has been repeated or surpassed, and probably never will.
