  1. A hard choice. on What's the Best Game Console of All Time? · · Score: 1

I think it'd be a hard pressed debate to determine which console really was the best, as the concept of best will usually bring back feelings of which system evoked the most fun for the user. This can be seen in the comments here as individuals have rallied behind every system released.

Ultimately, however, this isn't a bad thing, as it tells a great deal about how we view games! For many of us, the best console is the one we grew up with. Why? Because it's the one we spent hours playing on, hanging out with friends, united in a common goal of beating a game, discovering its secrets, and mastering its levels. I know of no person who has gone to an earlier game system they haven't played and enjoyed it more than the one designed in their generation.

This tells me it isn't so much the game and the console that make a system great (although, they obviously play a part) but more the company kept and memories made with that system that breed its loyalties. Video gaming is a social event afterall. ;)

Aside from this, we have to concede without bias, that each console brought something to the table others did not, with the rare non-impact of a few systems whose names are nearly lost to time.

  2. Re:you're being passive aggressive on Playing Music Slows Vista Network Performance? · · Score: 1

I couldn't agree with this position more. Mac OS X IS a different GUI, yes. But it's also an EASIER and more USER friendly GUI than Windows. The only reason it presents ANY difficulty (and that is marginal at best) to get going with it is because everyone has been TRAINED (yes, trained) since their first computer experiences to "learn how to use" a Windows computer. When you sit down and think about it, much of the way Windows is setup, where the options are, and settings, and methods of doing things (And this is ESPECIALLY TRUE of Vista) doesn't make much reasonable sense. But we have learned to think of it as being normal.

My mother can attest to this, as I think most mothers can who have little computer experience. O=)

And, yes, I use all operating systems in my job, been stuck with Vista for 6 months now, love the Linux clusters, wish for XP back (the best MS OS since Dos 6.22, 98 SE with honorable mentions), and my Mac works just fine.

Further, as others have pointed out, how is she promoting underage drinking if a) she was above the legal drinking age at the time the picture was taken and b) we have no idea what was in her cup. It's promoting underage drinking by a role model of students, the teacher, showing off a picture of her drinking something and implying it is alcohol and that she is drunk. Thusly, in the student's mind, this is saying it's okay for ANYONE to drink. You know, because the students would NEVER learn that behavior from ANYONE else, like their parents or peers or movies or because it's been done time immemorable. Stuff like that just doesn't happen. It only comes from teachers.

  11. A future tech utopia? on MacWorld Keynote Announces x86 iMac & Laptop · · Score: 1

An x86 Mac! Are we finally on the verge of a system that does it all? The questions that keeps looking, will Windows run on it? Linux? Will they do it natively? Perhaps VMWare will provide the final solutions. A laptop (dual core no less) that can run any operating system desired (at 90% of actual speeds or faster) is the geeks ultimate play toy.

But this does raise another interesting question. I do recall JObs professing that this version of OS X will only run on a Mac with Intel architecture. We all already know that the OS can be found and run on current x86 systems. How long, though, do you think it will be before Apple offers OS X as an alternative platform for everyone's personal home computer? Afterall, MS made its mammoth foundation on their OS's. And would such a stance really hurt Apple? They could still sell their laptops as "Mac certified" or something. "Use the best with the best" etc, etc.

Interesting times lay ahead. Right now, I just want to play with one!

But seriously, if the industry isn't heading for a crash yet, it soon will be. You can't survive on churning out the same thing day after day. It's boring. And I'm bored with modern games. Yet I keep playing the oldies and finding new oldies that make me say "wow! Look at that!"

  15. I hope someone at Penn State is reading this.... on Why Students Are Leaving Engineering · · Score: 1

I graduated from Penn State with a BS in Electrical Engineering. And it certainly is BS. In my entire engineering career the classes, with exception of perhaps four (not counting liberal arts classes, folks), proceeded similarly as Kern describes here. In fact, my junior level electromagnetics class was more of a "history of equation derivation" course than anything else and was literally based on a problems solutions set manual that was originally written in Japanese and translated to English.

How's that for a noggin' scratcher?

Most professors could barely teach, it was more of a relaying of slide shows and, yes, even directly reading from the text book in class. These professors cared far too much more for research than instruction. One professor I had, who was actually good at teaching --bless her heart, got so frustrated with them that she left the university to return to her industry roots.

To be fair, half of them were much more helpful when you could catch them at office hours (but let's not go there with how often they weren't around and the TA was left...). And they were smart. Very smart.

I agree with many of the replies here. It does take a certain insanity to enjoy this line of work. A creativity and drive for finding solutions to problems. The grand fixers of the worlds woes. Forcing nature to yield to your will and design. But that doesn't negate the horrid quality of instruction in the classroom. The major difference between my highschool (where I did take many AP courses) and college was the quality of the teacher; the kind of time and effort they put into the class helping convey information, IE: teaching. Not reiteration.

And just for the record, while not stellar, I did graduate with a GPA of 3.01 and I still agree with this guy.

Most notable amongst all of this is how they brought the computer into the home and to everyone and his grandmother. This is truly a mighty feat. Viruses, bugs, and lowered expectations of computers aside, they have indeed done this. Although, quite honestly, in recent years, it seems to have outlived its usefulness. OS X is a superior design and any *nux system is wonderfully simple, versatile, and powerful (even if some are really frustrating to set up). Windows was for the common folk.
