    News? What news?

A search for "TSA" in the 'old stories' section shows that the last story involving the TSA was August, 2004. A search at news.google.com brings up one or two stories related to the "TSA lied" story (top story is they're banning lighters and more than 4 matchbooks on flights), and maybe one of them was posted before the one on Slashdot.

Regardless of the apparent fact that I've been living under a rock concerning this veritable Media Circus over the TSA, the submitter still could have included a little bit more information on what the hell he was talking about. First glance makes it look like one of the previous stories about identity theft from credit companies, and the submitter didn't even bother to type out the name of the organisation.

I imagine the reason I was modded up was because I actually took the time to look the TSA up in Wikipedia and posted a link, rather than just complaining. Past that, I have no idea.

I suppose even scarier is the inability for the person writing the summary to explain who the TSA is (Transportation Security Administration), what they do, why the government is involved, and how it affects me. A 'summary' should give me enough information that I don't have to RTFA to understand what the hell is going on, right?

    from Wikipedia (emphasis mine):

The term Native American was introduced in the United States by anthropologists who considered Indian quaint, demeaning, or inaccurate. (See "political correctness" for a discussion of this approach to altering language.) However, a 1996 survey revealed that more "natives" in the United States still prefer American Indian to Native American. [15] (http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0762158.html)

Despite the preferences of American Indians, American teachers and academics (excepting many historians, who generally use the historical term) have persuaded most "white" Americans to use the term "Native Americans." Many Americans mistakenly believe Indians is offensive; Russell Means, the famous American Indian activist, is instead offended by the term Native Americans. [16] (http://www.peaknet.net/~aardvark/means.html)

Some American Indians oppose the term Native American because, they argue, it serves to ease the conscience of "white America" with regard to past injustices done to American Indians by effectively eliminating "Indians" from the present. However, most American Indians in the United States are comfortable with Indian, American Indian, and Native American. Among American Indians, the preferred method of referring to an American Indian person as such is to use the tribal designation if known. "Wes Studi, the American actor, is Cherokee" is thus probably preferable to "Wes Studi, the American actor, is an Indian." [17] (http://www.allthingscherokee.com/atc_sub_culture_ feat_events_070101.html)

Some people argue that Native American is inappropriate because "native of" literally means "born in", so any person born in America is "native" to it. A more serious difficulty with this term is that several ethnic groups traditionally excluded from the American Indians were just as "native" to the Americas as them. These groups include the Inuit, Yupik, and Aleut peoples of the far north of the continent. Eskimos was once used for these groups, but this term is in disfavor because it is perceived by many of them as derogatory.

And who doesn't have Windows set up to be double-pane all the time? :p X-Setup does it for you, but there's also a way to do it with the "Folder Options" menu under Tools. Under the File Types tab, select the Folder filetype, and change the default action to explore. 9 times out of 10 (barring some weird calls to Explorer) you'll get the double-pane view.

The program can send calls from specific callers directly to voice mail. This allows the user to avoid having to answer callers they do not wish to speak to, but still retaining the option for a custom greeting message for the caller and the opportunity for the caller to leave a message. You can also have all callers, except ones specially marked, go directly to Voice Mail. This allows for greater privacy as you can only answer the calls you wish!

http://www.pagerealm.com/tc2k/ - the TeleCrapper 2000 was linked to on Slashdot a long while back by the creator (in a comment to a 'what hardware do you hack?' article, I believe).

It's been awhile since I've looked at the actual site, but I think it was hardware related, and he was looking for people to do a software version. It's similar to what you're saying (and I actually thought of the exact thing you're talking about when I saw this before), only it's a two-way answering machine. He has it set up to make a prank call out of it using pre-recorded conversation snippets. I imagine it's not too much different to make it an auto-answering machine.

Other than that, SourceForge has very little in the way of PC answering machine programs, at least for Windows (I don't even have Cygwin installed after my most recent reformat, so I haven't looked at Linux stuff).

Personally, I would kill for a cheap or OSS solution that could read the Caller ID and immediately pick up on the answering machine. If I had any coding ability at all I'd do it myself.
