I wonder if using a heat pump to cool servers would be more efficient than using fans and A/C.
And using a geothermal heat pump is significantly more efficient than using an atmospheric heat pump. The former pumps heat to and from the 50 degree Farenheit ground while the latter tries to pump heat into the hot air during the summer and get heat out of the air during the winter.
Server farms using these type of pumps would save significant amounts of money using the same equipment.
Their right. I prefer watching shows without commericals, but now they're putting commercials *in* the shows.
Yesterday I was watching "American Chopper" while waiting for thie "Alien Planet" special to come on. The dialogue sounded like an hour long advertisement for some stupid luxury SUV.
So I turned the TV off and listened to Prairie Home Companion.
I didn't like Enterprise. Suprise, suprise, right?
Here's what I didn't like about it: There's all this really amazing stuff going on at Earth. Humans have just learned they're not alone. They've just received technology that basically makes economics impotent, as well as technology that allows them to spread throughout the galaxy.
What do they do? Go far, far away from Earth! Nobody cares about politics or other stuff. There's a species with three genders we've never heard of! There's a temporal cold war! How about making contact with the Romulans? Nobody wants to watch things about how people deal with life-changing events.
The last season has really picked up. The idea of Terra Prime is excellent. If they had run with this idea from the beginning, maybe they'd have a seven year run like TNG.
You can use iTunes with other MP3 players, but they won't auto-sync and you can't buy music.
And, yes, you can update iPod firmware.
No, I will not use WMA DRMed files even if they do update the firmware. I've had enough trouble trying to get a friend's MiniDisc player working only to find out that I didn't have the "rights" to play the song on it.
However, the knowledge gained from using electric motors more and more will help when we need to switch to hydrogen.
If we don't blow ourselves up first.
And there is a cheap source of hydrogen: Wind, solar and wave. Wave power can be generated at rates comparative to coal power, totally renewably, and surrounded by stuff that's two-thirds hydrogen.
And my unborn children thank you for doing your part.
I hope that parents will vote with their money and send their kids to school elsewhere.
Until our woefully underfunded (and therefore underperforming) public schools are sold to these charter school companies because "private enterprise can do it better." Then everyone who can't get into private schools will have to send their kids to them.
All because "it's not the government's money, it's your money."
Saturn V plans weren't destroyed. They're still on microfiche at NASA somewhere. The blueprints (dead-tree format) were donated to a Boy Scout Paper Drive.
I agree that nuclear fuel recycling is one part of our energy solution, but to ignore renewables is insane, especially when you need power to generate hydrogen. The storage and transportation problems with hydrogen mean that the closer you can generate it to the POS (point-of-sale), the better. So put a few dozen solar panels or a windmill at a gas station and have that generate hydrogen through electrolysis.
Exactly! A couple years ago I had the misfortune of having to convert a couple hundred Word documents to HTML. An XML based open document format would have allowed me to easily put the documents on the Internet by creating a stylesheet instead of wasting a hundred hours slogging through the crap HTML that Word generates.
How so? The "Internet" doesn't publish information. The "Internet" doesn't have editorial boards. The Internet is merely a communications network.
If you're so concerned, why not push for the requirement that law enforcement acquires a warrant before tapping your connection?
Right now, there's nothing stopping Comcast or Verizon or SBC from monitoring your traffic and eliminating ads for competition or unpopular political viewpoints. All they'd have to do is put a revision into their TOS and there's nothing we, the people, could do about it except jump ship to some other corporation who will do the same thing.
The government would never be able to do such a thing without the ACLU (cue the boo from conservatives), EFF or any number of organizations jumping down their throats.
The little old lady, however, does receive benefits from it. A municipality that has free WiFi or municipal FTTH for $15/month will attract young professionals, especially if it's a bedroom community for a larger city. Young professionals pay taxes to the municipality, which then has money to provide services for everyone, including the little old lady.
Bah! You kids and your hammers! When I was your age we used a rock. we just picked it up and bashed away. Sure, we bruised our knuckles and cut our hands, but we didn't complain. We liked it!
Yes, but their design was very robust. The heat shield was underneath the capsule and above where most of the ice. If there was a problem with the launch they could just ignite the escape rocket and get out of there. Not so with the shuttle.
Something must seriously be wrong at Sony if the PS3's rollout is going to be missing Christmas.

Stretch Armstrong? But his arms stretch out to next week!

You're right. Some people never learn.

Obligatory: Berman and Braga killed it.
Water is a greenhouse gas, yes, but it's a greenhouse gas that condenses and out of our atmosphere, unlike CO2.

Fuck that.

Why don't they just get DSL? Even a symmetrical line is cheaper than $500/month, especially in a large city.

Besides, it's like me putting a chocolate cake on the table and telling my niece not to eat it. I'm better off not putting the cake there.

Simple: Block the few big webmail providers and fire anybody who they catch visiting any other webmail site.

What are you talking about? Speakable Items? It doesn't work as well as they say, and is really only a gimmick. But it is a cool gimmick.
It's about living below your means (my biggest splurge in the past year has been a $125 printer) and NOT BUYING THINGS ON CREDIT.
