  1. good luck inforcing it... on EU Considers Taxing SMS Messages, Email · · Score: 1

As others have stated, this is just stupid. How could you possibly set up a system to monitor all this traffic. Wait... i think the NSA could show them how... Seriously though, even here in the US many states expect you to report your internet purchases and pay tax on the items from out of state... um... its too bad i've *NEVER* purchased anything off the web.... ;)

Are there laws for things like this? I've heard of local companies having breaches, and all that comes of it is "oops, sorry. call us and call your credit card companies". shouldn't there be some sort of legal obligation for companies leaking/releasing this information? i don't know anything about health care, but aren't records there kept very confidential? aren't there fines and/or penalties for releasing patient information? shouldn't consumer information be treated the same way?

  3. NOT-win scenario? on Just Say No to Microsoft · · Score: 3, Funny

    Shouldn't that be a non-win/non-win scenario?

I've been surfing over that way quite a bit lately, most /. stuff ends up over there or starts there.. there are usually a lot more articles, although some of it isn't very interesting... its a nice place to find some of the less mainstream stuff that won't make it on /. these days....

  5. Is technology partially at fault? on Improving Education? · · Score: 1
How much of our push towards making education include technology (i.e. making sure there is at least one computer in every classroom) is actually causing part of the problem? So much of what previous generations learned had to be LEARNED.

IANAT, but it seems like the attitudes of "Why should I learn to spell, that's what I have spellcheck for" and "Why should I learn math, that's what I have a calculator for" are becoming more and more commonplace because its so easy to find the answers. It just seems like as children are not taught the value of learning and are instead taught how to use technology shortcuts. Granted, I am not saying that removing technology is the answer or that there even is a simple answer to this, but are we not continuing down a path that most people educated (in the US system anyway) will be completely reliant on technology to even function?

This is what I was thinking too. Why can't you just watch for small fast movements and "filter" them out and/or watch for large fast movements. I wouldn't see why this couldn't just be some sort of software layer between the GUI and hardware. I think you could easily sort out extra clicks too. And isn't this similar to some of the "click-lock" features and other "accessability" features you can turn on/off in the OS? IMO, it seems like IBM is just finding a place to make some extra $$$, especially with a high price tag.

Next thing you know, they'll be trying for a patent on "a device that captures movement signals from a handheld device".... sigh

OMG, does that sound like an ad for pr0n... I am in the exact same boat, and I'd like to have a simple phone that I could use for ~$20 a month or so. None of the larger carriers have anything like that, so I started looking into the pay-as-you-go services. Most of them still try to suck you dry, but it seems like VirginMobile is a good deal. You can get their basic phone is only $40 bucks to buy, and you can just add a minimum of $30 every 90 days. That comes out to around $13 bucks a month for a cell phone. Not bad in my opinion since I use mine so little, but would still like the convience of having it. It uses Sprint's service, which has always been OK for me. Hope that helps someone, its saving my wife and I about 60 bucks a month!

Oh, and no, I don't work for them.. :)

Now can we all stop complaining and post some interesting tech-politics discussion?! Since i'm in one of the "battle ground" states (who isn't?!) our local paper had a nice site for offering top 25 issues and showing how you align with the four candidates in ohio... you don't live in ohio? try it anyway, it still gives you an interesting idea of where your ideals actually fall. now if i only had some mod points.... ;)

I was trying to play something like super mario world and actually had difficulty because the controls were small and difficult to use... i guess the screen size is ok, but if you go to larger sizes, then you kill your battery life, etc etc. and larger controls mean larger unit... oh well, i guess you're screwed either way. :) (yes, i usually answer my own thoughts, thank you very much)
