I would like to see some hard numbers on scratched vs. scratched Nanos. I get the feeling that the customers who have a scratch free Nano aren't speaking up here.

  2. Late to the party on Intel Preps Mac mini Look-Alike · · Score: 2, Insightful

I'm late to the party here, but hey, I got to read all the posts.

I see stuff like it should be a PVR, it should be a gaming computer, it should be the silver bullet that kills the Wintel werewolf.

The Mac Mini is the shot across the bow in a war that is about to begin. Sure there has always been drive there for Apple to take back the market, but they were lost. The Mac Mini is Apple's epiphany. They thought different.

After looking at my (soon-to-be) in-laws usage of a computer, the what and why of the Mini makes sense. First, I thought why bother with a modem? Well guess what fellow nerds, most of America still uses AOL dial-up! Second, why not make it expandable? How many average users acutally crack the case on that Dell and install new components? I don't have numbers, but I'm guessing that is what keeps the Geek Squad in business.

I looked at what my in-laws used it for and found that it is about email, pictures, web surfing, and light word processing. If they could actually get out of the AOL mentality they might get broadband and use it for video chat too, but thar might take them out of the comfort zone. These are people who are looking for a new digital camera with a floppy disc drive.

These people are the real consumer market out there. Apple understands that these people are fed up with the virus, slow running PCs (that they try to install XP on), and general hassles of system maintenance. These are the sales that will make Apple a real player again. At $500 the hardest sell of the Mac is getting people to leave the comfort zone of Windows.

I'm currently working on one of those GUI applications, not Informatica. I am pleased with it's capabillities and I think it's a very powerful and reliable tool. Big projects can take a couple days once a good template is built and the metadata management is simple and useful. Reusable code and SMP processing are available and greatly enhance the speed of data transfer.

In the wrong hands though, such a tool can be made into a piece of crap. The problem is that too many "programmers" don't know SQL before they use these tools. They just go at it. No standards in place; just head down. Judgements need to be made on when to use the tool's sql generation and hand coded SQL to get best performance.

Too many companies get substandard people in place and then wonder why their $1M software doesn't work, it puts these tools in a bad light, that is undeserved.

What matters are the fundamentals that we are teaching. As an example, my sixth grade teacher would spend time after school with me helping me debug BASIC programs on the ol Apple II. What my teacher did was set the stage for me to grasp fundamental logic concepts. This knowledge allowed me to move freely in the computing world. That type of knowledge transcends making the font bold or creating that powerpoint slide. Which brings up an additional point...if we want to ban video games because they can make kids more effective killers, shouldn't underage hunting go with it?

I would contend that real life hunting and video game killings are not the same. In a real life hunt the child can see the true consquences of using a gun to kill another being, not some digial representation of it. In my estimation there's nothing like the real deal to make an impression on a child (or an adult.)

The problem with video gaming is that it provides a disconnect from the actions taken by the player (unless you count a vibrating controller as punishment.) There's no carcass to clean (or bury), no blood to wash off your shoes. Play enough games (at the right age) and soon you think that this is how it works in real life.

I'm not advocating abstention from games or hunting, moderation is key as with most things in life.

I understand your desire to see a movie as it was when released. Given the properties film and the processes used at the time nothing was perfect (this was mentioned in the blurb.) What I'm getting at here is that all this digital manipulation may sterilze the film.

I'm sure that the cinematographers of the time understood the challenges of using the Technicolor process and made certain decisions about the colors of makeup, gowns, etc. in order to acurately create their vision. If we were to color correct these films they may not remain true to the artist's vision.

Now there are some technical things, like the alignment of the negatives, that I think should be done to correct problems caused by aging (ie emlusions contracting etc.)

As for the quality of more recent (ie 80's and 90's films) on DVD I think that it might have more to do with the processes used to transfer the film to digial format in the early days of digial encoding. I've seen some DVDs with hairs and dirt in the frame and I know that came from the original transfer probably, the result of poor cleaning proceedures before encoding.

That was called the Volkswagen (Peoples Car) Beetle. From a mechanical perspective is the Porsche 356 worth that much more than the early Beetle? In my opinion no. But from a design perspective, there is a large difference and I think most people would say that the Porsche wins hands down.

Through this same logic one can think of the Apple laptops as the Porsche 356. There are other laptops out there with the same components, but the quality of the Apple design and materials is so much better. Who else is making a full metal case like the PowerBook? How about the TFT screens? (yes I know there was a recall) They still look that much better.

Point is, you're not going to get quality design AND functionality without paying more.
