  1. Re:ads on Flash Developers Fear Spectre of Spyware · · Score: 1

There are ads on top of slashdot?!?!?!!?! :) As somebody who has developed in flash, i feel that the whole technology is rather bloated and suited for three things: 1. Probably most reliable and cross platform way to play video/audio online, for musicians as well as things like the parent noted, homestarrunner 2. Games. The way flash can use the mouse and keyboard and graphical prettiness is superior to anything else on the market. 3. Advertising. Flash is really well suited for this, because it supports all kinds of logging and flashing prettiness. I try to avoid flash when making a website, except when necessary for multimedia, and even then only when the user is expecting this.

  2. Bright High School Student on Bill Gates Proclaims US High Schools Obsolete · · Score: 1

I agree with the parent poster. I'm currently in grade 10 high school. I spent about 1 week browsing through the textbook, and feel that i have a fairly good understanding of everything in it. I surprised myself by getting a grade 11 textbook and understanding a lot of it. Everything is a rehash of what we have learned before, over and over again. If I had a teacher to help me, I'm sure that I could probably pass math and science in about a month. However, Would i remember everything? Having everything retaught to me over and over really helps me remember it, and I'm sure that I'm less likely to forget what I've learned. Also, being the bright one means i get to help classmates. This is really a good learning experience because I have to be able to grasp the concepts really well to teach them. I agree the education system isn't well built for smarter students, but these are the students who can go and learn on their own. Not that self teaching is anywhere near as fun or engaging as being taught is.

The globe and mail are one of canada's primary newspapers. They are high on my trustworthy list. They aren't tech oriented, but that doesn't mean they aren't trustworthy. You have to remember that this article was aimed towareds untechy people. Despite slashdotters not liking the last paragraph in particular, it was a good explanation to the non-technical why some websites won't work. Overall, i feel it was a good review.

  6. Ballard in BC on Hydrogen Buses In Iceland · · Score: 1, Informative

I saw some of these buses in Vancouver last time i was there visiting family. They are considerably quieter than a normal bus, and i wouldn't have known it was a fuel cell bus except for the slightly unusual roof, and the large banner proclaiming its power on the side. Ballard Fuel cells power these buses. There are also buses of the same make in Chicago

There is definately interest in hydrogen, but i wonder if it is the most appropriate solution. Hydrogen still needs power to be manufactured. Are there no better solutions out there?

  8. Reel to Reel on Last Manufacturer of Pro Analog Audio Tape Closes · · Score: 0

Wierd that this is the very last manufacturer. But i suppose that with all our newfound digital tech there is no longer any need for high quality analog equipment. High quality analog wasn't cheap either, my highschool had some good reel - to -reel recorders that we used to play around on if a teacher would be generous enough to let us touch them. Now adays we can play around with full audio editing stuff on our computers for no cost (other than a normal Pc).
