I think the two main reasons for the custom video type is to make it easier for end users. The viewer is the a fullscreen viewer that streams really well, and i suspect their file format has to do with it. They do support a varity of platforms, more than most:
Minimum machine software specification
PC Compatible Apple Macintosh Linux (still in testing)
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 98, ME, NT, 2000, XP
Browsers:
Internet Explorer 5 or better.
Mozilla 1.0 or better
Firefox 1.0 or better
Opera 7.0 or better (May work in other browsers, however these are untested)
Browser Extensions: An Active X enabled browser ~ or ~ Sun Java 1.3.0 ~ or ~ better ~ or ~ Microsoft Java
Operating System: OSX version 10.2.7 or better (with all current patches)
Browsers:
Safari version 1.2.4 or better (fully patched)
Mozilla and IE are not always supported, as they lack javascript to java connectors.
Browser Extensions: Any Sun Java except un-patched 10.3.9.
Operating system: Debian, Red hat, Suse
Emulators:
Only Wine has been tested
Emulated Browsers:
Firefox and IE
Emulated Browser Extensions: Sun JVM 1.4 or better.
I work at a theatre.
I see all the stuff that goes on.
We've got kids who sit in the back and try to peg people in the head with popcorn, people who put their feet up on the chairs in front of them, sometimes kicking the people in front.
There are people who talk through the entire movie, there are kids who yell stuff like "I'm bored" (this was funny, during herbie fully loaded with a crowd of like 20 people - terrible movie). There are people who scream and yell and laugh at anything.
We don't really have a problem with cell phones at the theatre, mainly because we kick anybody out who's phone rings.
And because we're a small independant theatre we can't charge an arm and a leg, you can see the movie for under $10 including snacks. Plus you get a nice screen in a comfy seat. Bad things don't happen every showing, actually they are pretty rare that there will be people bad enough to disrupt your "viewing expierence".
So movie theatres have their good and their bads. But i still think they mainly are good, and if there was a movie worth seeing people would go.
Not true. I have ample money and don't have an HDTV.
Not everybody feels the need to go buy new tv's, because some people only watch tv for less than an hour every couple days, and even then, its for the weather or news. Who knows, maybe some people don't like what fox and mtv are shovelling into our faces.
you know what folks, they can't pick and choose like that. To the admin, whether you are installing firefox or subseven, it doesn't matter! You have to have control over your network, and that means not allowing foriegn software in, even if it is proven. You want firefox? Go ask your admin. Offer to roll it out over the network for him. Don't try to get it set as default, but as an option that is available. Disable the ability to install plugins or extensions. Modify whatever is nessicary so it works with their network monitoring system. Ensure that it successfully installs on all machines. Keep it updated so it won't be another security hole. How many of you are willing to do that? I bet most of the whining high school students aren't willing to take on the task of maintaing the network, so why can they complain about it?
I take it you don't have much expierence in "product testing"
You do it someplace where nobody will notice you, that you don't normally shop, like on the far side of the city or something. You just leave after your testing is done. If they try to stop you, just boot it.
This is really a cool idea. Imagine, you could have a completely immersive room, with TV's on all the walls, floors, and roof. Like omnimax theatres.
You could make everything into a world that you have complete control over the appearance. The next best thing to the matrix.
I know a user who I'm certain his system is totally 0wn3d. Its an unpatched windows 98 machine, no firewall, nothing. I put an EICAR string on his machine, and 6 months later, its still there. He calls them "Cheezy Viruses that don't hurt me" if they don't interfere with his day-to-day operations.
Only when he got a dialer and built up $10,000 worth of phone bills one month did he care.
The moral of the story: Users don't give a damn. I know a guy who happens to run a rather large botnet and he says 90% of his victims know there is a virus on their computers, they just can't be arsed to do anything about it.
Hey, I could easily swap it out, but you know what, i still use my calculator for fractions.
Not that I can't do without, but there are some smart people who are just really slow with basic math:-)
Little kids watch all kinds of movies.
I work at a theatre, and I remember seeing this 5 year old going to see American Pie. I haven't got a chance to see Episode 3 yet, but you can't get yourself in a knot over kids at a movie.
Bittorrent is used to allow large files to be shared without having to have a heavy-duty server. This is good for free software developers and GNU and the GPL and open source and to prevent the slashdot effect.
did you read the article;)
Mr. Kutaragi also reaffirmed that the PS3 would feature backwards compatibility with both the original Playstation and PS2 games
Sounds like my school. We use windows 98, unpatched, and internet explorer. Malware to the level that they are unusable. They solved this issue by simply updating all the computers hard drives from the server every night, unfortunately, the master image happens to be spyware infested.
Running microsoft antispyware on the system showed 200+ items before crashing.
So let this be a lesson to you: Don't use win/98.
Why i like it? It gives me a nice optimised core, an installer that doesn't baby me, and something i can build a system off of. I'm running on an old pentium2, so i try as absolutely hard as i can to keep the system lean, and avoid compiling wherever possible. Plus there is a good pile of distro-specific documentation, and great support. I'm all over it as my distro of choice.
There was no reference to towels on page 140.
Page 140 was when slartibartfast introduced them to Magrathea's "factory floor".
Perhaps you have a diffent version of the book than me.
Just an example:
I was at a friends house, watching TV. On his computer, 4 feet away, a dialog box pops up, from his firewall, warning of an attempt to connect on a port of a known trojan horse (subseven). Its bright red, with warning in big letters. Looks it belongs on star trek computers during red alert. So he clicks allow?!? i ask him why, and he says its been doing that all day and if he clicks deny it just comes up again in 10 minutes. Just to show how little people care about what things say on their computer.
(he did actually have the trojan, he got it from a crack he downloaded. He had also set his antivirus to ignore it....)
This is also the first thing i thought of when i read the summary. I wanted to try out wordpress, so I set it up once on my server... no outside links, no mention of it to anyone... and I started getting texas holdem spam. How did the spambots find the page if its on its own? not once anywhere did i mention it in another page. How?
I remember using MyIE2 at some point (maxthon now isn't it?).
What i liked was that if a javascript popup came up, in the status bar it read
"Hold Ctrl to suppress any more alerts" or something to that effect.
So if you would click on Ok while holding Ctrl the script was suppressed.

Turns out the fridge runs linux!
This is the biggest reason i absolutely love adblock. IntelliTXT is a javascript thingy loaded in so you can just block it!

I walk into room. I see playstation 2. I see etch a sketch. I pick up etch a sketch. More fun =]
And longhorn is named after a saloon in between whistler and blackcomb called longhorn. Apparently bill g likes the place or something.
/me puts down chair. Damn it. I wanted to do some bashing.

Installing slackware actually :P
