    Some of the more bizarre items I have been prevented from buying or even viewing on the US eBay (I am in Australia), have been a pair of Leitz binoculars and a Hewlett Packard stethscope (neither of which were invented by Americans ..... note the word invented).

    Should read:


    Ummm, not really, taken as a single metric, it can be misinterpreted. Informed opinion will (should) measure other parameters such as waist size (less than 105cm) and actual body fat to arrive at a sensible interpretation. This, combined with glucose, LDL/HDL, BP and other obs should be taken as a whole, not in isolation.

    For those who claim familial dyslipidaemia, there is an out, you need to submit a Drs certificate quarterly.


    I realise that there is a need to track the welfare of employees and encourage sensible risk reduction, but fining them seems completely bizarre.


    I remain amazed that the companies are (or may be) allowed to discriminate against employees in this manner (and the govt lets them, glad I'm in Australia).


    Utterly amazing.

    Well, come to Australia, it is against the law to serve an intoxicated person (someone adjudged to have over the prescribed content of alcohol in their blood, or appears to behave as if this is the case) further alcohol.


    You will be prosecuted (a fine and or jail) if this occurs and you are found out (yes, even at a private party), as you have a duty of care to the customer or friend.


    Yeah, yeah, nanny state, get over it. Working as I do in a large inner Sydney teaching hospital right next door to a popular entertainment precinct, I am heartily sick of stitching up nutters who just can't control their drinking (or drug taking).


    Ice, a whole 'nother story, although letting them bounce around our "safe" room for a while often helps if they have only had a little. Occasionally, we have been known to chase them around the park across the road from A&E. Often, as was the case yesterday, they are too wrapped up in getting their gear off to wave their genitalia or other bits at passers-by to notice that the police, security guards and A&E staff are sneaking up on them (yes, I know, they often freak even further when cornered).

    As I pointed out below, and reinforced by others, Leica, at least is still in the camera business, and much of it (certainly the 35mm equipment and most of the lenses) still produced in Germany. As for the others, I don't much know as I remain happy with he M6 & R6.

    There is a venerable company by the name of Leica, Ernst Leitz. Oskar Barnack from there invented 35mm still photography back in the early 1900s, with the first small hand held 35mm camera available to the general public in the late 20s early 30s (I inherited one, the Type D).


    Whilst I own a couple of modern (M6 & R6) Leicas which a all German made, I'm not sure where their digitals come from though, although knowing Leica, they may well produce some at home (Germany) and some offshore.

    This may well be stating the bleedin' obvious, but the biggest problem is making sure everyone is able to access this through big pipes. Everywhere. For trivial cost (think people on welfare or minimum wage) for all you can eat download. Sadly, the nr of places in the world that can do this are extremely limited and I'm guessing the US isn't that different to the rest of the world. Indeed, IIRC, within the last fortnight, there has been /. commentary on certain ISPs doing a bit of price gouging.


    There needs to be a more equitable access to fast and deep 'net access to ALL strata of humanity if this is going to work and provide education (unhindered by commercial/political/religious censoring).

    I realise that the latter is a subset of the former, but despite all best attempts by the latter, the former is not a subset of the latter.


    I only bring his up because (at least for one major user in Australia) there was no hiccough.

    Um, it is mine, one I developed about 12 years ago, an amalgam of my views on certain scientists that spend way too much time peering at the structure of some unregarded molecule whilst the big picture goes to hell in a handbag in front of them. Their favourite preface is always "You know what you should have done ....."

    For the people that have not developed disease states through enviromental factors (both macro and micro) they tend to be genetically predisposed to develop hypertension (repeat for all other ailments).

    Possibly because I was not refreshing the page every few minutes to check whether anyone had replied might be an answer. And, that I tend to construct a slightly longer reply than the one-liner than many seem to find is the extent of their abilities.

    Taking the meds alone, is never as good as lifestyle changes such as just about every first world inhabitant could stand to lose 15 to 20 kg (through mainly exercise) to no ill effect, they could also eat rather more fruit and veg, drink less caffeinated, carbonated and sugar soaked beverages and drink the occasional glass of red wine.

    It is controversial because the majority of groups researching hypertension do not (currently) feel that there is enough evidence to prove this hypothesis (despite the JAM-1 finding).


    There are many proteins/lipids/cytokines such as A1+32 (a subunit of good cholesterol, HDL) that cause inflammation in the vascular wall, some are caused by oxidation of these antigens and there are many others, such as this newly named JAM-1, that we are yet to understand.


    A scientific finding does not a breakthrough make, and there will need to be many years of experimentation by many groups both in vitro and in vivo, as well as huge amounts of peer reviewed publication before there is a clearer understanding of what this finding means.


    It is a process, completely unlike /. (or indeed opposing imaginary friends or politics, for that matter), where people standing on opposite sides yelling "tis, tisn't" at each other wears down the other and they give up and say, "yeah, whatevah, do I look bovverd?" (although some group meetings are like this, these things are thrashed out behind closed doors).

    The federal goverment is becoming an increasingly minority investor in SBS (Special Broadcasting Service). Tragically, SBS has plummeted since the beginning of their programme interrupting ads, so it is far more like commercial (and is almost indistinguishable from) TV.


    The only thing that keeps them ever so slightly in front, is the, generally, high quality and wide diversity of programming.


    The introduction of programme disrupting advertisments to keep the money coming in, is yet another demonstration of the pressures brought by the morally bankrupt and economical with the truth current federal government here in Australia on every section of Australian society.

    Ahh, three months is probably a bit of an ask, a month is more like the reality here. With my last two Mac purchases (1997 & 2004) I received OS update vouchers, and duly received the updates FoC.

    OK, so, let's just get this $300 clear. When you buy a Mac, you are NOT given a 5 user Family Pack for free, you get a single user licence. If someone is saying that when you buy a Mac, you get a 5 user licence for free, they really shouldn't be buying that cheap 7/11 ice, it just isn't worth it. Make the trip to kids playground, the man there is just so much more aware.

    OK, it will still work just fine, still be supported by Apple with free updates for security problems. Additionally, in all probability (if Apple's past behaviour is anything to go by) you will be eligible for a cheap upgrade (anywhere from free to half price) depending on the window around which you purchase the Mac and the OS release date.


    I'm a little concerned that you feel that you are going to be charged $300 (where did you get this price from?) for the OS. Apple has never charged that for an OS (apart from their server software). Besides, you, as a student, are eligble for student discount on all of Apple's products.


    The US education price for Single User OSX is $69, for a Family Pack (5), it is $199. Go to the Apple website and check the store.

    Hi, I'm unsure of how this delay will stop you from buying the new computer. As far as I know, Apple will still be shipping computers in September. Or are things different up there in the northern hemisphere? I realise we are up to 16hrs in front of you (daylight savings dependant), but I suspect that wouldn't be a deal breaker.
