  1. Re:Hmm.. on When Should You Buy Your Kid A Laptop? · · Score: 2, Informative
A really good idea would be for school boards to develope a little knoppix type system that could be provided to kids as nessecary - on a DVD-RW perhaps, to allow for saving their projects.

Such systems already exist. There is Edubuntu and also some Live CD's based on Knoppix with focus on education. I'm sure others exist, but those just a few.

This isn't exactly news. As far as I recall, Disney started to move over to Linux a while back (slowly started to convert). Also, I'm pretty sure that Disney provides funding for Wine (Disney used Wine to run Photoshop, or so I heard).

  4. SpreadFirefox uses CivicSpace on Firefox Community Site Hacked · · Score: 3, Interesting

SpreadFirefox uses a variant to Drupal, named CivicSpace. Does that make much difference with patching? Maybe only a few aspects are different. I installed it, I've only noticed just some minor changes, nothing too major really (of course, I spent only a few minutes with it), but personally I'd probably stick to Drupal. Larger community base.

Jeff Jarvis also has gone blogging full time (well... more so consulting about blogging) and you can catch more on that here

And notice all the pieces of the puzzle fit in... Google maps, movies, email... and now personalized homepage. Google is slowly becoming a complete site, no longer just a search engine. The beauty of it is the fact that they still approach all their services by offering a very clean interface. Now that is an innovative company.

I would highly suggest Opera to any power user. Users that use POP mail a lot and are looking for something that integrates into browser. Users that use RSS technology and want a feed reader. Users that want mouse gestures or some quick way of accessing the methods, users that want a built in IRC client, users that just want many built in features (please don't state that Firefox can have all these features, because that would require you to install extensions, which will make it more bloated).

  20. Re:Ads on Which is Better, Firefox or Opera? · · Score: 1

The fact of the matter is this... Opera is my favorite browser for the features it has. But when suggesting a browser to a new user, I'd probably mention Firefox first because I *know* that most people will turn down Opera knowing that it either costs money or it needs to be paid for to get rid of ads. Of course, I will often bring up Opera to a Firefox user (which I really have to stop doing so) but they often go back to the Firefox ways. I don't mind, because both browsers are great with each browser having very loyal userbase.

I have yet to see one's with commercials still in them. I'd think that it'd be more of a hassle to seed since all it will do is just raise up the download size. Typically, here is how I've seen it as. A typical 1 hour show (Non HDTV) w/o commericals (Usually is 42 minutes with intro and ending credits) usually add up to around 350 MB. A typicall half hour show (Non HDTV) w/o commercials (Usually is around 22 minutes with the intro and the ending credits) usually add up to around 170 MB or so. While it'd be quicker to get it up online, you probably won't see nearly as many seeders knowing that there are still commercials in them (sure you can fast forward, but why bother when you can download one's that you don't have to with?)

People still can get the torrents from IRC (in fact, here is how the chain goes, the ripper will talk to someone in IRC, they will create torrent, then it is released to the masses on IRC, then it is posted on website, and then the whole world gets it. As far as I know, that is how it goes).
