  1. How bout offering more than you did in 1996 on What Kind of Alternate Business Models Could ISPs Use? · · Score: 1

    In 1996 I was able to get the same cable modem bandwidth I'm getting now. If anything it was better with fewer people using it. My uploads were capped at about 50 KB/sec (yeah they advertise it in kilobits, you know what i mean). The download speeds have gone up, maybe doubled since then, maybe 400 KB/sec tops. Yes they offer faster access for more money, but I'm still paying the same price, if not more than I did back then for the same thing. Where's the miraculous "factor of 10" increase we've been expecting all these years? I've heard that it's significantly faster in other countries, for less money. Time to move to India?

    I'm thinking tin foil hat wearers would go for it.

    But this just makes me think of Hushmail. No matter how "secure" it is, it's going to have some NSA-only backdoor hard-coded into it. And you're going to draw unwanted attention by using it.

    And it doesn't take much special expertise to use firefox with adblock, noscript, etc. and/or a hosts file to block doubleclick.net.

  3. Re:graphics != game on NVIDIA Quad SLI Disappoints · · Score: 1

    The problem is the emphasis on first person shooters. The graphics do equate to the game when all you're doing is rehashing Quake 2 for the 50th time and counting on online play instead of original content.

  4. modded XBOX on What's the Best Game Console of All Time? · · Score: 1

    A modded xbox loaded with emulators to play every NES and SNES game ever made? Sure, a PC can do this but the xbox controller is the same as the SNES/NES with more buttons. Trying to play genesis games is not as simple. Xbox 360/PS3 all i see are first person shooters, I got tired of those around Quake 2.

  5. Console games don't last on Gaming Platform of Choice - Console · · Score: 1

    What about replay value or simply how long the game takes to beat? Many $50 console games can be completely beaten in 20 hours or less. Grand Theft Auto games being the major exception, this is where PC games have the edge. How many hours of WoW can you get for the same price? The DVD containing an xbox game is usually 90% video filler.

    All i see on that specs page is that this thing has a pathetic 40 gig hard drive, displays bmp files and plays mp3s, as well as mpeg-2 video, which would cost $200 tops to do with an xbox even buying the 40 gig hard drive separately.

    We need bounty hunters. That's the only way to stop spam. The "laws explicitly prohibiting it" can go to hell. They can't track down osama bin laden, or spammers, but microsoft puts out a bounty for whoever created the last big virus and they find the guy in a 3rd world country 3 days later. Now I'll just wait for someone to reply to this and suggest that a 1 cent tax on every email sent could pay for the bounties.
