  1. Re:Great... on Music Industry Looking for Lyrics Payoff · · Score: 2, Insightful

It's not just that it's a bit greedy of them, but it might not be in their best interest in the middle to long run. I can't even count the number of times that I've heard some part of a song I didn't know the title of, only to track it down by searching on the net and finding it through some open service. If it's not publicly accessible, it would be hard to get the results via google, and they have to be high on crack if they think I'm going to go to each and every label's website and use their own crappy search in an attempt to track down some mildly entertaining song.

Then again, when was the last time the recording industry did anything for the long term in favor of the short...

Maybe someone would have to compose a disc with a few free cool videos from the net (like the crazy retro-baby-pirate-kung-fu video from some months ago) that one could hand out for free. The discs would every now and then warn the user that the operation s/he tried to perform is permitted, but could easily have been stopped. Then a quick rundown of exactly what in "their" players would permit the *real* owners of their player/media to stop them from using the media they legitimately aquired. I suspect there'd be no trouble displaying a warning that "The time is now 15:27. We *could* stop you from watching this between 12:00 and 20:00 if we wanted. Beware of DRM! Booooo!" - or something similar.

  4. Re:Open the bug tracker on Opera Seeks Developer Input For Opera 10 · · Score: 1

In my experience, submitting a report is not a wasted effort if it contains an actual report as opposed to some venting or rant.

If the bug is a duplicate, the report will help Opera know how commonly the bug is encountered. If it's not a duplicate and there is too little information, but a good summary, some employee will likely contact you for more information.

In either case, there were some information gained and a higher probability of the bug getting attention. You could take the time you would have spent searching for a duplicate and just write a better summary of the bug.

That's not to say I don't support your opinion that the bug tracker should be open, but I think that a mediocre or better bug report is rarely a wasted effort. It's just that the task of searching for duplicates is left for the Opera gremlins.

But that's only a small selection, really. Most everything in Opera can be bound to a mouse gesture or keyboard shortcut. Just go to Tools->Preferences->Advanced->Shortcuts.

I have a few tips for you.

    1. Put the status bar next to the address bar.
    2. Use search shortcuts instead of the search bar. Typing 'g something' in the address bar will search for 'something' on google, while 'z something' will do the same for Amazon.
    3. The progress bar can be toggled to show only when something is loaded, and you can even make it appear inside the address bar.
    4. Instead of showing the tabs, you could use the window panel. You need to enable it by customizing the panels.
    5. Ctrl-F8 will toggle the address bar, also while in Full-screen.
    6. Alt+F11 will toggle the main menu.
    7. Ctrl+F7 will toggle the scrollbars.
    8. For quicker switching between tabs in fullscreen mode, I recommend holding right mouse button while scrolling. Personally, I prefer to set that list to use the tab-bar order instead of which were last used, you can find that setting in Tools->Preferences->Advanced->Tabs then "Cycle in tab bar order".

These are just things off the top of my head though, so if you *really* wanted to go nuts you could probably get away with a lot more.
