GamePro has a feature up examining the possible end of days for the Game Boy. From the article: "...it would seem the end is nigh. Sega's Game Gear offers Genesis level power and a beautiful screen next to GB's humble, NES-quality experience. And Nintendo seems be placing its hopes on its quirky but successful Super Game Boy*. Rumors of a next-generation Game Boy system were crushed at E3 2005 with the unveiling of Game Boy Pocket**, a revised GBA selling on its stylish, compact design and beautiful (but minuscule) screen."

    *(I know that's just a Game Boy, I didn't have anything else to go with :( )

Of course, we all know how this story ended. Sega crushed Nintendo and the Game Gear flooded the market. Hope it does well against the PSP, which is even more powerful (and therefore more fun).

It could, and in a dream world where companies respect consumers' intelligence, it would even happen. In this world, however, even if a disc could hold 1000GB, the marketing types are gonna say "Better make it a 3 disc set so stupid people will think it's worth more".

Anyway, I can't stand how we're getting a new video format already. Heck, two formats even. Competing with each other. Which means DVD will be phased out in a few years. How long was the VHS format around for again? A whole lot longer, IIRC.

...In fact, I'm going to root for Blu-Ray just so it'll be a little bit longer before we "need" another @#$% video format.

  8. Better Tutorials! on Games Are Supposed To Be Fun, Right? · · Score: 3, Insightful

As said before, it's good to have a mix of simple games and complex games.

But if you're going to make you're game complex, then teach people how to play. Most games will attempt to teach you controls in the first level of play (or training mode), but most of them suck at doing so.

Example: Timesplitters Future Perfect. When you play the first level, it will tell you really basic stuff like how to move move, shoot, switch weapons, etc, but it neglects to teach you a lot of important controls, and gives you zero information on what kind of tactics you should use. In other words, people used to FPSs made this game, and the obviously don't understand what it's like to not be an FPS player.

In short, companies really don't spend enough time on tutorial modes, especially when the game is of a common genre.

(Personally, I love playing tutorials, even when I'm familiar with the game).

Or how about: "The quality of a news site is the number of worthwhile articles multiplied by how enjoyable they are to read minus 1,000,000,000 if the news site posts any articles about bogus formulas that are completely subjective and put way too much weight on minor aspects of a show, and use multiplying and adding in abritrary ways that lead to totally made up numbers".

  14. This is the reason for the naming... on The Revolution Is In The Games · · Score: -1, Flamebait

  16. Glitches are good on Gaming Glitches Add Character · · Score: 2, Interesting

Exploits are bad. Being able to get glitches to work consistently in your favour is exploiting.

However, glitches can offer some of the best moments in a game. Whenever a big glitch happens, whether it results in Game Over or lets you skip a level, you remember it. They give you a story if it's the type of glitch that can't be recreated by others.

For example, on in GTA: San Andreas, we finished some tricky level with lots of shooting and just had to drive a safe truck with a bunch of drugs or money in it (I forget which) back to our territory. Well, this safe truck is unstable and someone starts shooting at us and we didn't want to lose. We tried to turn, but the truck rolled over and starting sliding on it's side.

But it didn't catch on fire, it just kept sliding across the road, frictionless, for about a minute, and then all of a sudden, it turned back upright and we drove it to the goal. It was hilarious at the time, and no one could stop laughing at this crazy truck disobeying physics while cops are swarming it and mission completion was on the line.

Also, once on NHLPA '93, I remember shooting a puck, and it landed on the crossbar at the top of the goal, and got stuck there and started spinning for about 15 seconds. The goalie kind of backs away from it, and then the puck drops and rolls into the net.

As long as they aren't consistant, glitches are good.

XBox Fanboy: Nintendo is for kids. They proved that with Windwaker and Twilight Princess is a desperate and failed attempt to keep up with today's market. We've been playing online for three years, and it'll be another 2 years before Nintendo makes their first game online. (Obligatory leet).

Playstation Fanboy: This is futher proof that Nintendo is living in the past. "Dur, lets pay money for old games that we already bought when we were young because Nintendo can't make anything new". Meanwhile, Sony is making a new console that is millions of times better than all current consoles put together. Have you seen the screenshots of Killzone 2? What's the Revolution going to have? Another Mario Party and some old side-scroller? Even the Nintendo sheep can't enjoy that.
