Quick point - getting a hunting license in the US (or at least in any state I've looked into hunting in) isn't "just a matter of signing your name on a piece of paper, waiting a couple of weeks and then getting your brand new rifle." You have to take and pass a hunter safety course where you learn how to properly handle a gun, identify your target, identify what is a safe shot and a kill shot (and not to take the shot if it isn't both), how to navigate based on topo map and compass, etc... And yes, people do fail the course.

That's not to say that people who lack courtesy and will shoot and scare off the animals for other hunters are the ones who fail.

You're not missing much with Android 2.2 being late. I've got it on my droid and I'd almost consider going back to 2.1. The icons routinely disappear off the screen (I just have to swipe to another screen to get them back, but it's an annoyance), and Pandora (or any other streaming music service) is affected by having every other song come through in low quality. All for what? Flash? They claim speed increases, but I haven't noticed any.

Forget EU and the UK. They're piloting the road pricing thing here in Maine. They ran commercials for a few months last fall on the radio asking for people to sign up for this pilot for some small amount of money. In exchange you get a GPS or something similar installed in your car that tracks your in-state driving and informs the government so they can tax you properly.

Don't get me wrong - I've been a Slayer fan since the 80's, but to say that they have more musical ability than pretty much everything on the radio is just plain wrong. They have written some fantastic stuff and have the ability to play fast, but both Kerry and Jeff get sloppy when they play fast. Tom plays simple bass lines and doesn't get too complicated with the vocals. Dave is a fantastic drummer though.

If you want to compare musical ability of metal players with what you hear on the radio, there are thousands of better choices.

Oh - and to get back to the great grandparent, I don't think the article said that all of this generation listen to rap. Even the quote in the summary says, "Rap music has always been mainstream." You can't deny that for kids going into college this year.

I think SilverEyes answered the bit about killing off all without the mutation quite nicely with this:

Suddenly, during a drought, proto-elephants (or whatever you want to call them) are able to retain enough water by digging for roots, whereas their less fortunate relatives die off.

As for a "first mutated individual," it may have been a trait that occurred in several individuals much like being tall is in humans. It wasn't long ago that being six feet tall was out of the ordinary. Now it's very common and not uncommon to see someone in a crowd over six and a half. Such heights were an existing trait and as they became more desirable they became more pronounced.

To relate it back to the story, I really don't see how social networking could be detrimental to their ability to work (unless they're "networking" 24x7 while they're supposed to be working, but that would be apparent very soon after hiring). Asking for passwords is just plain ridiculous.

After reading all the posts from folks hating the Ender Sequels, I've got to say that I enjoyed different books at different times in my life. When I was a teenager and first exposed to Ender's Game I thought it was great. I'd heard that the sequels were no good, so I stayed away. Later in life I went back and re-read all 8 books. What struck me was that while I thoroughly enjoyed Ender's Game and Ender's Shadow, it was mostly in a nostalgic way. The 3 sequels to Ender's Game all interested me much more. And then when I went on to the Shadow sequels I enjoyed those as some of the best political thrillers I've read. They aren't science fiction books, so you can't judge them as such. Now I'm very much looking forward to Ender in Exile.
