I know Microsoft dosn't want quick conversions to multitouch applications. They just won't work 'right'. Surface is great for public computers, where you want usage locked down anyway, such as hotels, casinos, waiting areas, transportation terminals... the single flat surface is pretty easy to sterilize and clean compared to a keyboard.
When making a Surface application nothing can be modal, and everything can happen at once... drag and drop ten different items to/from ten different sources and destinations at the same time for example.
My biggest disappointment when working on Surface was the annoucment of the 'Surface Business Desk"... turns out it was just a particular set of contact information for businesses that wanted to use Surface to call.
If I were designing it, a multitouch workstation wouldn't replace the monitor, it would replace the keyboard and mouse, and still have the monitor... I have more ideas, but I'd have to see about patenting them before disclosing =)
And all you have to do is pay someone to support it... maybe a large software company, that's produced a long line of OS's... Hey, maybe Microsoft could do it!
Seriously, why would anyone bother to pay the bandwidth bills, and accept the liability for errors, when it's already being provided by the origional maker?
If you want a free OS, use Linux or something. If you want a car analogy: Walk there.
It's the attorneys job to follow every possible defense. It might get the defendant proven innocent. If he dosn't, it'll be grounds for an appeal based on incompenant defense.
Seriously, why is there any argument against all the facts being available for a trial? If there is nothing to help him, it'll just ensure his conviction sticks.
Street Fighter II for the SNES, I videotaped a play session because I was suspicious. I then stepped through it frame-by-frame.
Usually, when both me and the computer player were defending, and I started an attack... the opponents counter-attack animation would begin before my attack animation started...
That is, the game artifically lagged in order to increase the difficulty beyond what a human opponent could provide. (aka, it cheated)
The Vandals did more than just sack cities you know. When someone steals something, do you still say they 'gyped' you?, when someone is unwilling to spend freely, do you call them a jew? Still make polish jokes implying they are stupid?
What skilled, knowledgable, trained network administrator would work for them at this point?
Some may be willing to take a crappy job to put food on their kids table... but one that's likely to put you in jail for following their own proceedures?... I wouldn't do that to my kids.
So are the banks unwilling or unable to spend the money on quality software?
Anyway, one of my peeves is the mysterious change from "Bank Fraud" to "Indentity Theft"... I suspect the Banks deliberatly retitled the offense to try and foist liability onto their customers...
If Person A uses Person B's indentity to take money from a bank, and the bank did not adaquitly verify the credentials and identity... how did that become Person B's problem?
I liked SVG, back in 2004/05 I wrote an interactive map application using SVG and what's now known as AJAX in IE5.
I read that Adobe was on the standards commitee for SVG, and piled tons of unneeded crap into the spec to try and make it a 'Flash Killer', but once they aquired Macromedia they stopped caring... and they were the only one that did.
There may never be a full implementation of the SVG spec, it's just too cumbersome, and outdated at this point.
The first few interations of a new naming scheme suck compared to the refined later versions.
Bad: 3.0, 95, ME, Vista Medium: 3.1, 98, XP, Seven Best: 3.11, 98 OSR2, XP SP2/3, Seven's update
The main reason the first iterations suck is that's when they introduce entire new API's, driver models, memory models... and it takes a while for developers, both inside and outside of MS to develop the tools and skills for that API version. Seven, desipte it's name, is basically version 6.1 of the Windows API. That is the versions named after years (95,98) were 4.X, The two letter names (ME, XP) were 5.X, and the ones with single word names (Vista, Seven) are 6.X
Basically, Seven will be better than Vista in the same way that XP is better than ME. I knew before Vista was even released that the new API would take a while to adapt to and that it would be this generations ME.
I once accidently did a minor DoS attack, when I was starting to write my own P2P client for the Kad network used by eMule, etc. it kept returning the same IP in response to every directory lookup.
Sorry to whoever had 127.0.0.1 back then, if your connection went down it was my fault.
I've been paying for my own medical insurance out of my own pocket since I was 23, now 36. A few months ago, my automatically deducted premiums jumped from $290ish to $530ish a month. Why?
Because Medicare sent my HMO (Group Health) a message indicating that I was on Medicare, and so they automatically combined the billing, without notifying me. I'm not even on Medicare! I may get a refund in Mid-August... meanwhile, I'm scraping by, because I saved some money for emergencies... having this happen during my regular period of unemployment (MSFT contractor 'break') makes it extra painful.
Make healthcare more affordable, so more people will choose to have it. NOT mandatory, involving buerocrats that'll screw it up even worse. Offer tax incentives, etc to businesses to cover their employees, don't cram it as another effective mandatory tax.
Fixed some source code files that someone had mis-saved in Notepad as UTF-8, or such.
the files had a Unicode Byte-Order-Mark character which the compiler choked on. FEFF the Zero-width, non-breaking space. It's literally an invisible character, so the easiest way to verify/fix the problem is a hex editor, so I used the always-handy DEBUG.
Don't worry to much about it, he's probably lying, or making some kind of joke referance. I havn't seen Talking Rain bottles in the MS coolers for ages... it's been cans only in the free beverage coolers for years. They even had special cans for Vista release and such.
Ages ago, when I was working as a tester on a mail client from... a large software company... I filed a bug on the potential security issue of automatically downloading images in HTML mail... it got Postponed. (I did file it like 10 days before release, and it wasn't a huge issue then...)
I was particularly amused seeing that issue mentioned on CNN at one point. Can't blame me, I reported the issue =D
After waiting five years for a social security disability determination, one thing I want the govt. to fund better is courts and judges.
Don't need more cops, don't need more prisons... we do need faster decisions being made. This would unclog local jails, allow review of prior convictions where new evidence was found, bring closure to victims, reduce costs, and overall reduce the fear and uncertenty in peoples lives.
When I worked for the local county, I had opportunity to watch a few arraingments at the jail; minor misdemeaor defendants had a choice, plead guilty and be sentanced at arraingment, and about half the time just get a fine/time served/suspended time/costs; or go back to the overcrowded, 20 bed + 10 floor pad cells and wait up to 15 days for the next hearing... arguing your innocence is not an option at that time, as the judge told pretty much every defendant as they almost all started to defend themselves. Only the entry of a plea, and setting of bail or sentancing. That is, Guilty, and serve less time, or Not Guilty and serve more time/pay more money.
No misdemeanor case where the defendant can't make bail should take more than 3 govt. business days. Hell, it shouldn't take more than an hour. The cop that arrested you should take you to the courthouse/jail along with statements from any alleged victims, and give a copy of the materials to a defender and a prosecutor. The case could proceed right then most of the time; unless a party presents an argument for delay such as the victim is currently getting medical attension, and couldn't get a statement, defendant is too drunk/agitated to defend self at the moment, wants to hire a specific attorney, etc. That is the right to a speedy trial is automatic, any delays are exceptions that may be argued; any consistant delays (such as as insufficent staffing delaying every single case) should be corrected, such as by hiring sufficent staff. If the consistant delays are not corrected, then let random defendants go until they are. the prosecutors will quickly focus on the important cases, and drop trivial charges.
Speedy felonies are not gonna happen, it's too big a decision to make lightly. but unclogging the courtrooms and jails would help the overall situation.
I vaugly recall a story about a EULA, which in the middle said something like "The first 10 people to actually read this EULA, and send an e-mail to freemoney@example.com before (a few months after the release) will receive $20."... and noone ever claimed it.
It's nearly impossible to have a single mind that can understand both the solid logic of computers and the twisted convolutions of the court system.
It's like trying to drink soup with a fork.

The money you could be saving with GEICO has a criminal record?
Only since 95 OSR2.
I tried to get a web browser on 95 Gold once...
Oblig. car analogly: An OS without a web browser is like a car without tires. Good luck driving to the tire store.

Uh...I've got some bad news for you.
It's at your house. 10 'til 'late.
Beverages are expected, only 2 have RSVP'd, but up to 280,000,000 may show up.
I have no idea if you made half those words up or not.
snd-bt-sco? (isn't SCO evil?)
bluez-3?
ALSA? (This I know) .asoundrc?
libs from a chroot? (I get this bit)
I suppose registry 'hives', and 'DirectX' can be equally obscure... but to install bluetooth stuff on Windows I had to deal with zero of those.
