This is good news; I'm guessing that the threat of HP making a BIG fuss will stop Microsoft from changing any of the OS discounts that HP get. Even if Netscape isn't used; the fact that the icon is there is good; The netscape icon represents another way to view the internet... too many people right now think IE IS the internet. Just that slight change in perception is a start.

Newsflash: there are bad things out there in the world

What (IMO) often seperates children who grow up to "good" and those who do "bad" is how they are guided through events & situations that occur in their lives. If no-one is around to explain what is right, to explain why you should do the "good" thing; how the hell can you expect the children to learn?

These parents who are say too busy working to bring in an income to feed their children and keep a roof over their head. Perhaps they should just take a wage cut, get a job with less hours. Less money correct; less money to just keep spending money on video games with no social interaction. So to offset that lack of money, sell off the expensively large TV, cable and the games console (which AREN'T essential) and spend some actual time with the kids.

  4. *Thinks back to the 1.44mb days* on Opera Turns 10, Gives Away Free Registrations · · Score: 3, Interesting

I used to LOVE Opera. Was back when I was using Windows 95 I think; after installing IE4 (thus active desktop), the whole operating system became awefully unstable, but especially when using IE itself.

I'd tried Netscape Navigator; but I never liked that... was slow, displayed things poorly and so just sat on my computer. It was a computer magazine actually that showed me Opera; with its claim of its install being able to fit on a single floppy! Wow, how did they manage that!

So installed it, and loved it. On my paltry 32 megs of RAM, on an unstable Windows 95; Opera was fast, stable, and displayed websites how I liked them. Perfect! But then I got more memory, Windows 98 came out and was more stable; Opera started becoming bloated for my likeing (so many features I would never ever use yet sit there taking up UI space) and so I went back to IE. Netscape at this stage? A joke.

And now of course I'm on Firefox; fast, customisable and easy to use, even managed to get my ex to use it. Its not without its faults, but its the best there is for now. One thing though; this free registration offer will have done what its set out to do; I will definitely give Opera another try

He created Buffy then its spinoff Angel: both doing well, especially the former. Now every TV exec will be expecting him to produce shows that pull in the kind of audiences the likes of Buffy did. Firefly was a victim of that: here at least, the first few episodes didn't bring in the ratings, so the rest of the series got put together in a muddled order and just wasn't given a chance. After being burned by this experience, at least with a movie he gets to write a script and a story that WILL get shown in its entirety.

The more I see of MacOS X and the more features they put in there, the more I realise just how slow devopment on the Windows platform is. Think of the progression thats been made from Apple, then compare that to Windows. The last great leap was done with Windows 2000 IMO: but even then for the desktop users there was nothing really knew.

Spotlight, Dashboard & Automator all look like great additions. I know there are perhaps Windows alternatives, but can any of them claim to be as slick as Apples?

I'm a Windows user, but as time goes on the thought of an mac mini just to give the OS a try becomes more and more tempting.

  11. The BBC has done alot for us.... on British Goverment to Reshape BBC Governance · · Score: 1

A lot of people complain about the licence fee and how they never watch BBC and BBC2 so shouldn't have to pay it. However, for me, the BBC's greatest achievement and role in UK media is it's ability to bring through new technology. The internet, internet services and linking television content to web content; the BBC has pioneered this in the UK and without them there wouldn't be anywhere near as many users of the internet. And they have helped with broadband too - media streams all over their websites from small clips of certain news broadcasts to whole programs. Digital TV: there is no doubt that without the BBC helping to bring through Freeview and push its Digital services on its channels, that Digital TV would still be flounding with no reason to have it for the average joe. The goverments plan to switch off the Analogue signal? Saved only by Freeview. And these are just more recent examples of what the BBC have done for us and are doing for us now. So yes, you may not watch BBC ever, or never listen to their radio stations, or visit their website. And commercial companies complain about how it's unfair competition. But for both people and those companies; the BBC's unique funding has willingness to inovate has created and expanded new markets that has helped and benefited everyone.

I don't know how their prices are in the US, but it's terrible here in the UK. In fact, it is actually cheaper to buy a brand new printer with 2 brand new cartridges already in it than to just buy replacement cartridges for your existing one. It's an absolute disgrace. And then they release half priced ones with only half the tank filled, which STILL come out more expensive than all the other brands. I campaign a lot around the friends and familty to NOT BUY LEXMARK. They're all "well, it's so cheap" and "well I won't use it that much so cartridge prices don't matter". And thats the market they aim at :/

No problems here: the odd crash when trying to view movies in browser; which probably has something to do with me using unofficial programs to view Quicktime/Realplayer movies. But other than that its fine. As the title suggests: could old extensions be causing the problem? When Firefox was released: details on Slashdot described how to get extensions working on the new version by manually editing some files. Could it be that these extensions: although with the fix did work in the new version, actually end up causing some stability issues?

  16. Re:I had this problem too and here's how to fix it on Half Life 2 Stuttering Bug Official · · Score: 1

Hard Drive performance is a HUGE importance and a huge factor in these sound skipping issues. I had it very badly when I first tried to play: try to pick something up and whack something; the sound would skip etc. The hard drive was thrashing like hell non-stop. To solve it I did 2 things. First of all: for launch options I entered: -heapsize 262144 - basically this forces HL2 to use the specified amount of RAM (in kb) - I have 512mb so entered 256. This means more data gets cached into memory rathar than rely on it being streamed at the time from the HD. Seconldy, and most importantly, when I first installed my Nvidia Nforce 2 drivers i chose not to install their IDE Driver. Going back and installing this IDE driver made an absolute HUGE difference in performance of the game. This IDE driver lowers overheads when transfering data, especially when multiple writes / access are occuring... ie. in games like HL2. And voila, no problems for me. How Valve will "release a fix" for this I have no idea, since a lot of the problems can be based on poor IDE drivers and HD performance etc. My only thinking is that they make the game pre-cache most if not all of the sounds... this though could have other side effects; much longer load times, and problems with computers who have limited memory as it is.
