And now those lines that were funded by the public are to become new profit centers under the guise of "network management"? And you don't have a problem with that?

How about instead Comcast actually do what they were supposed to do and build capable infrastructure that has enough bandwidth for everyone to do anything?

Personally, I would love for the General Accounting Office to take a nice, close look at Comcast's finances to find out exactly where that taxpayer money went to. Looks more like it went into Comcast's advertising budget so that they could oversell their capacity instead of putting it into the hardware that could have prevented all of this in the first place.

Verizon has millions of miles of dark fibre and have said numerous times that they have plenty of bandwidth as it is. What's Comcast's excuse?

No, it doesn't. I asked about this when I used to work for the income tax department of a particular state many years ago. It has nothing to do with protecting credit card companies.

The fee that businesses pay to use credit as opposed to cash is a business expense. In other words, if you want to offer convenience for your customers and there's a fee involved, that's the price that you as a company pay in order to entice customers to do business with you.

That being the case, forwarding the fee that the business has to pay onto the customer was deemed to be anti-consumer, because the card is the expense of the business, not the customer. A business is more than welcome to stop using credit cards if he doesn't like the fee, but then that business can expect people to take their business elsewhere if they wish to use credit.

I'm not saying that the end result is different than what you state. I'm merely saying that the premise for why the law is there is not as you state. However, there is nothing illegal about offering discounts for cash, which some companies do, particularly gas stations. You're more than welcome to frequent those places instead.

Windows 3.1 and WFW 3.11 came on something like 11-13 floppy disks and there was NO copy protection of any kind. NONE. People were used to DOS but could now have this fancy GUI-driven "operating system" for the cost of a box of 3.5" floppies. NO ONE that I knew in the PC world ever had to buy a copy of Windows 3.1 because they always had either a friend or someone at work who had the floppies.

The availability of Windows 3.1 through piracy "sneakernet" made it the de facto standard on all PCs once it was clear that the world was leaving DOS and going to Windows. That laid down almost the entire user base for Windows 95, who then moved to 98, etc.

The dominance of most of the major software out there ESPECIALLY Windows is due to piracy, and the software companies know it.

I once sold an old PC that had been in my family's possession for years. Some jackass decided to be an asshole buyer and came back with "this is missing, that's not working", apparently assuming that I was some kind of clearing house who moves too much stock to know the details about a particular item. I responded by describing exactly that PCs condition as shipped as well as the statement that my family had owned that PC for years, so I knew every detail about it. It's bad enough that people have to pay the fees that they do, but to then have the ISP shove advertisements -- or have an excellent outlet with which to shove advertisements -- to customers who are already paying (or in some cases, like Comcast, overpaying) for their Internet connectivity bothers me immensely.

Even when the NES came out, the C64 was the king of the gaming machines with a ton of top-notch games out for it. When C64 users got together, very few cared about GEOS or MultiCALC. It was all about the games, from Mail Order Monsters to Space Taxi to the original Castle Wolfenstein to the Ultima series to The Last Ninja. Gaming was what made the C64 as popular as it was.

Unfortunately, it comes down to bullsh*t licensing and protectionism. The TV stations and national networks don't want to lose the revenue that would be gained from pushing local/national commercials onto you. After all, if you spend all of your time watching the BBC, you're not watching commercials of local/national interest. The networks want to justify the costs of those commercials, so they write their international agreements to lock out viewing by people outside of that country. In my case, I'm sure that the Discovery Channel, which owns BBC America, would have a fit if the BBC allowed the US populace to pay for direct BBC access over the Internet because that would likely take away from the BBC America viewership.

It's the same kind of bullsh*t reasoning as to why people outside of the US can't buy MP3s from Amazon or iTunes even though there is technologically (and logically) no reason to prevent such sales. It all comes down to the money trail, and unfortunately we're not allowed to cross that trail to see what's happening on the other side. My guess is that DLC functionality will be available on the fix disc but that the actual content will be made available later.

I do agree, however, that the whole "You'll be without your game for who-knows-how-long while we get a replacement to you" method is bullsh*t. Why the hell don't they just do what EA did for that abomination, "Ultima: Ascension"? Registered users get the replacement sent to them for free. That's it. Apparently, trying to wish them onto the system hasn't been working out very well.

With the Wii, if a disc-based game is faulty, a new disc needs to be sent out unless Nintendo starts to take advantage of SD cards. (See Activision's Guitar Hero III-in-monaural debacle.)

The gaming community is rife with examples of games that had a ton of potential but sucked beyond description because the games were rushed to market in order to meet a deadline. Doesn't anyone remember Ultima: Ascension?

Nintendo has a lot riding on this game and a lot of built-up hype, so I don't blame them for wanting to make sure that it's as flawless as possible. Meanwhile, I'll keep playing Guitar Hero III (even though it's currently monaural) and Zack & Wiki, which I highly recommend for those who remember the golden days of the point-and-click adventure.
