I don't know about others but in my experience the number of problems with my consumer-grade FiOS is minimal. I've had FiOS 15/2 for about a year now, and I've only experienced one drop where I lost both Internet and voice. I called to report the issue via my cell phone and was told, after a few minutes of investigating, that there was indeed a local outage and that they're working on it. About four hours later I was back up. This was on a weekend afternoon, so it's not like it was a matter of life or death, like some people make it out to be.

My only gripe when that happens is that Verizon does not give you any dial-up time with consumer FiOS. You might think, "Well, duh, how can you call when your phone line is down, too?" but I have a data cable for my cell phone, which can act as a modem. When I had their DSL, I also had 50 hours of dial-up per month. So, if DSL went down I could still use my Verizon account to access the Internet through dial-up. With FiOS Verizon doesn't allow that because FiOS and DSL/dial-up are considered to be different business entities from what I understand.

But overall I'm very satisfied with my FiOS connection and my uptime has been well over 99% during "normal" hours with me using it heavily at night and my wife using it throughout the day.

Matsushita's new Blu-ray recorders, which are able to record up to 18 hours of full HD programs on a dual-layer disc, will go on sale on November 1 in Japan.
Even if one of the more efficient codecs is used can they possibly get that much time in *true* HD resolution on a 9 GB disc? I'm wondering if they screwed up and are actually referring to dual-layer BluRay discs? Maybe? Perhaps? After all, the first paragraph says...

Panasonic maker Matsushita Electric Industrial said it would launch new Blu-ray optical disc recorders in November that allow more hours of full high-definition recording on a single disc than any others available.
I honestly think that they're talking about BR discs and that the article wasn't written clearly. 18 hours of HD on a 9 GB disc? That sounds too good to be true.

They do try! Years ago, I made the mistake of buying an HP PC that came with a very new XP (pre-SP1). Before I even turned the PC on, I took the hard drive out, installed a new one, and installed a fresh copy of Windows 2000. Less than a year later (still within warranty), the optical drive died. Sure enough, HP's outsourced, "have to follow the checklist" tech people tried their best to tell me that I was not entitled to a DVD drive replacement because I didn't have the "correct" operating system installed. Anyone of a less stubborn nature than me would have given up, but I fought through several days' worth of phone calls and demands to talk to managers. At that point it became a matter of principle. But I finally got the replacement sent to me. They might not have been "voiding" the warranty by initially denying my warranty claim, but I don't see any difference between voiding and trying to not honor a warranty. Either way, you're not getting the service that you're entitled to.

Just because we know that trying to blame software for hardware failures is ridiculous, there are even more people out there who have no clue that they're separate issues and will just give up.

That in itself is nothing more than a veiled demand that companies release their source code; otherwise, they're violating the whole premise of Linux, right? If I was a software developer and I was hit with an attitude of "I want your code because your code demands freedom!" instead of "Hey, thanks a lot for helping to support our platform!" I wouldn't want to code for that platform either.

No, you didn't use the word "demand", but your comment was a direct reflection of the attitude that (unfortunately) has existed since Linux became a commonly-known term that companies who release software for Linux are just somehow expected to release (or "give freedom to") the source code as well.

Of course, this would be even easier if the game companies would start using OGL instead of DX.

I'm also very interested to hear how Linux will have an influence over what you play. Funny, but I've never had a Linux person come to me and say, "You can't buy that game! It's not on Linux!" and I've never heard a gaming company say, "We're not releasing this game until we have a working Linux client!!"

And how a Linux client will be a liability to Valve? Yeah, expanding a client base. That's a really bad liability. *cough*

Why would they be required to do that? Just because they might release software on Linux does not mean that they are in any way obligated to release the source. There is nothing that says that if you write software for Linux you must release the source code. Microsoft could write Office for Linux but they would be under absolutely no obligation to release the source code, and of course we know that they never would. I know that many here think that Linux is synonymous with open source, but in reality open source is not a requirement for Linux.

A few years ago, I spoke with someone from one company that makes astronomy-based software who said that they decided not to release their software in the early days of Linux because of the demand at the time from Linux extremists to release the source code. Please don't scare Steam into the same kind of retraction by suggesting or insisting that they release their code as well. You can be almost guaranteed that Steam would be a binary release, and there's nothing wrong with that.

They said that even back then a CD with booklet and jewel case with a run of 10,000 presses cost about $.25 each to manufacture. This was back before we could even create CDs at our own PCs and when CD prices were at their premium of $16-18 each. (Then again, aren't they still around that price?)

Yes, I know there is more than just manufacturing, but consider that every $.25 profit to each disc was 100% profit. So, even if the labels made $1 profit for each disc sold, they made 400% profit. I'd be curious to see what they really get for digital downloads considering that there is no physical product to manufacture, no glass master to create, no shipping, and no middleman markup. I can't believe that they're making less than 400% profit.
