Not to mention the fact that the big guy often has so much money that a few failed lawsuits barely put a dent in their bank account, but the little guy is bankrupted by the attorney's fees for a single suit.
Maybe I'm dense, but in the United States aren't the school systems run on a state and local level? How exactly is the President planning to mandate this? I suppose they could hold funding over their heads (like when they threatened to cut highway funding unless states raised the drinking age to 21), but aside from that I'm afraid that's outside the purview of the Federal government.
Find ways to reduce the corporate influence and money in these fights first and then there is a chance.
The irony, of course, is that the people in position to reduce corporate influence are the ones benefiting from the corporate money. The amount corporate money thrown at such a reform would be massive, assuming their stooges wouldn't do it for free just to keep the gravy train running on time.
I've never really understood why so many Slashdotters have this attitude about hosted services. Perhaps they are local IT folks for smaller companies, and fear for their jobs?
I don't understand it either, even for smaller companies. I work for a small non-profit company and we use hosted services for our web hosting and our email system. They're great, mostly because if we ran these in-house we'd have to be on call 24/7 in case something went down afterhours, on weekend, or when we're on "vacation". We don't paid nearly enough for that, mostly because we don't have the money as an organization. But the off-site services work great (most of the time; our provider has a tendency to take down email for unscheduled maintenance without telling us), and are much cheaper than having to do support in-house.

But in real life, apart from landlords and capitalists, food actually, literally, grows on trees. As does fuel for cooking and heating, and a wonderful building material called "wood".
And apparently in the fantasy realm you've labeled "real life" the food and wood are just shit out by the trees in a useful form and nobody actually has to do work to put it to use. Work was invented by The Man for the express purpose of "keeping you down".
Meanwhile, in the ACTUAL real world, somebody actually has to collect the food, or God forbid, grow it on a farm. Maybe even prepare it into a tasty meal, depending.
And somebody has to collect, chop, or saw the wood, depending on whether you're burning twigs, burning logs, or making boards.
And somebody else has to build the tools needed for that job.
And somebody else has to gather the raw materials to make those tools, which itself requires tools.
Not to mention the time required to develop the skills needed to perform some of these tasks and do it well.
And these people who sweat and bleed and work their fingers to the bone to get these jobs done should just freely give the fruits of their labor to you, at no cost, for what reason? So you can sit around on your ass, drugged out of your mind, contributing nothing but bad poetry and worse philosophy? Yeah, sure, ok.
I guess we should be glad our DNA doesn't have a wife... I can see it now:
Wife: Honey! Would you clean out the nucleus? There's a bunch of old crap down there!
DNA: If I throw anything out I'll just find out I need it a million years later. Like this AIDS protection thing...
Wife: You're never going to need that. Now take it all out to the curb and throw it out!
Million years later... BAM! AIDS!
DNA: Damnit! I knew I shouldn't have thrown that out!
Honey, that happens everywhere. Wherever you go people just love a good accident, whether it's just a fenderbender or a 16-wheeler that jackknifed into a school bus full of nuns and orphans. Hell, a cop can pull some guy over and everybody's gotta have their gawk.
nearly every seafaring country disagrees with Canada on this matter.
Ah. I didn't know the positions of any other nations besides Canada, Russia, and the US. My impression, and possibly that of the GGGP (if that's proper nomenclature) was that the US was the main nation, if not the only nation, of the opinion that it is international waters. Thank you for correcting my misconception.
Because in the dispute over the ownership of the waters in the Arctic the Canadians and Russians each claim various pieces, while the American government claims that it's international waters and anybody can take a share of the resources. The GP is siding with Canada and claiming that the Arctic is Canadian waters, not international waters as claimed by the Americans.
I don't understand that. Maybe if it were a car analogy.
How about, "Do you support the ability of toll bridges to charge you different tolls based on whether you're driving a Chevy or a Mercedes-Benz?"
American? Oh no, I'm from Canada.
Oops! What I meant to say was: "American? Oh no, I'm from Canada, eh?".
Old rule: This is Slashdot. Nobody ever RTFA's. It's tradition.
I can't read that. If you type in your password, it will show to us as stars. But when I type my password it shows to you as *******. Neat, huh?
You know, sometimes a Shai-Hulud is just a Shai-Hulud.

Ultimately we ALL will rest in piece.
Unless you get hit by a grenade. Then it's pieces.
So you're saying we're on the interior surface of Concave Hollow Earth?

I owe my practically flawless English (I'm French) to chatting with Americans on AIM ever since I was 15
On AIM? That, sir, is what we call a miracle.

I believe that would be libel.

They can do that in the Gene Projection now? Wow! Back in my day we had to wait until we were 16 to take the G.O.A.T. and find all that out!
No, that's all wrong. Rainbows are made by the Government!
Old World Monkey
To be fair women aren't either. Just ask all the poor fellows who inadvertently raised the milkman's son.
But how am I supposed to criticize the UN? They don't have any S's I can turn to dollar signs!
So, uh, not cash then, right?

(Oh, and link for anyone else interested in the topic: Territorial claims in the Arctic)
