So people who get 3 movies, copy and burn them, and send them all back within 24 hours are getting flagged to be throttled? Oh noes!!! Maybe if you didn't abuse the system, you wouldn't be pissed at losing the free ride, no?
I'll reiterate my digg comment....I really wish Google would "open" their software or something; I just want to install a gmail like front end on my host and connect to my IMAP server. I don't like the idea of all my emails being on google's servers - you could argue that they're on my host's servers, but then I'm paying my host for that service, or alternatively I could always host it myself. But all I really want is a gmail interface for my own webmail. Roundcube has/had promise, but I don't like the direction they are taking in making it a desktop-like web app that imitates Thunderbird.
Why can't someone just blatantly copy gmail in php/mySQL to use IMAP, implement a "labeling" scheme using saved searches or tagging or something, and build on there. Copy what works first, then add some ajax calendaring, and you've got a killer app that people can install on their own.
Dang it, I need more PHP/DHTML experience or I'd do it myself.
Ultimately, as much as I think we like to think otherwise, we are merely mammalian inhabitants of this planet, like any other type of animal. I have confidence that even though we think we're important and all, in the grand scheme of things we'll have little to no influence over the planet whatsoever. The univerise takes care of itself, and our relatively short existence has no reason to prove otherwise.
So if MS produces the product with the holes, and then sells the fix to those holes, who is liable if something still get's through? "oops, sorry, we missed that one?"
Not that I will participate, but this seems like it can be a good thing if it ends the era of Windows viruses Joe Consumer who signs up for this (or gets a free subscription with their new Dell?). But if we continue to have worms and viruses, even with the fix, then what have we gained??
Whew! I'm glad their developing their own algorithm. If they'd license something from say, google, then I'd be worried they'd actually find something.
It's good to see our tax dollars are going to work replicating of all things - a SEARCH ENGINE. Is this because google wouldn't turn over their search results to the govt?
It sure will be fun when I don't want to hook my X-Station 9000 up to the cable or phone line in order to play it. I seriously doubt download installations will be the wave of the future anytime soon. Part of the point of consoles is being able to pack it up and haul it over to a friends house. You don't want to mess with hooking it up to a network or something.
But all of the addons have always been based on IE, which until v7 (?) meant you still had the bugs and whatnot associated with IE6. I've played with MyIE2, Maxton, etc., and they always were good, but just felt thrown on top of IE (which they were) as opposed to Firefox whose extensible features are built in. Maybe we'll begin to see IE7 "extensions" similar to those in Firefox? Methinks I'll still be sticking with FF anyway, but for those cases where I need to use IE, maybe I'll try IE7!
Where's the adblock extension for IE? Thats a good chunk of the reason I use FF over IE, just so I can turn off all the crap that I can't in IE....I might be tempted to try out IE7 at work, though....heh, I feel "guilty" using FF for looking up things and whatnot:-P
This is all well and dandy,

Google Toolbar v.4
·
· Score: 3, Interesting
but, well, I already use sites like delicous or an FTP bookmark synchronizer. I do have some bookmarks on my google/ig page, which I've used as my start page, but what does this toolbar really gain me? Where the heck is the google calendar so I REALLY organize my life around google? Seriously, that's the one thing that's lacking - gmail's got the email covered, the start page works as a suitable portal (for the most part), but I still am either tied to Outlook through work, or the crapulance that is Sunbird, or trying to integrate my own (webcalendar).
Never heard of the guy, and frankly, I think the thought of reading a *book* to know how to play a game is retarded. Do people actually buy these things?!?
On a sidenote....
I want a MMO game in the sense of Freelancer (sorry, thats the most recent thing that came to mind). A space based combat/trading game, complete with it's own economy. Allow you to roam the universe as a trader, build a business empire, etc. Or become a pirate, looting other ships, building up a fleet, etc. Become a mercenary for hire, run escort missions (real ones, for real people, the aforementioned business empires). All in a massive online environment. Is there something like this already?
If there's so much crap floating around out there, how is that taken into consideration when launching spacecraft, etc. into orbit, or further? Is it like flying into the proverbial flock of geese? What are the risks of hitting something when you're doing a space launch?
1. protecting children from pr0n is completely different from combatting child pr0n. keeping johnny from searching for free pr0n sites is not the same as preventing the sickos out there violating kids.
2. heaven forbid the PARENTS actually do something and pay attention to their kids of they're looking at things they shouldn't be online. It's not the gov'ts job to be a babysitter, parent, etc.
Surely ticketmaster will add a charge for this "convience" feature. Nevermind it saves them costs or anything.
And for the naysayers questioning the security, compatibility of phones, quickness of messages coming through, privacy, etc:
I read this to be OPTIONAL, in addition the normal methods of buying tickets. You can still walk up to the box office, pay in cash, and get your tickets. If you don't have a compatible phone, you're SOL, order it online or via the mail. You don't HAVE to use this service. Obviously those with compatible phones will be able to use it. My old phone couldn't download ringtones - I didn't bitch because they were offered but I couldn't partake. I ultimately got a new phone. You probably aren't going to go to the box office, pay, then get a text message with your ticket. I could see it for on the way to the venue, or maybe even while waiting in line. But I'd be sure to prepare for it early enough just to be safe.
Just my $.02.
Assuming I want a text ad superimposed on the screen while watching a show, which I don't. I get pissed enough as it is when the station puts their logo or heaven forbid, a weather alert or something, blocking out a part of the screen. It's even better when they put that crap on over a sports game, blocking out the score or something. Aarrrgh.
I have no idea why we would want to put up with MORE television advertising, whether google is behind it or not. It's still MORE ads. I'm already paying $50+ a month for cable just to have a third of the show's time period spent on ads, most of them the same show after show. We're no longer being entertained, we're just captive audiences for creative infomercials.
Maybe I just watch too much TV....where's the library again?
I want to be able to run the latest IE on a mac:-P
Seriously though, games and.NET. I could probably do my.NET programming through a vmware solution, but like others have mentioned, running games in a virtual machine may or may not work. Only time will tell I guess...
I, too, hope that some way to run windows apps on the MacBook becomes a reality, either by dual booting or vmware or something. I really would like to try OSX, but refuse to pay the premium when I use windows for.NET development and some light gaming. I could easily justify getting a mac laptop if I could do 99% of my internet browsing, email, office work, etc., plus also be able to load up Visual Studio and play a few games if I wanted/needed to. Will a VS.NET 2005 come out for OSX?
There ARE legitmate reasons why one might want to run some method of WinXP on a Mac.
I appreciate, and agree with a lot of your comments, but it seems like a lot of the comparisons between usability on windows vs *nix revolves around 3-4 different distros doing what can be done in Windows. I.e., "distro X does this better than windows, but doesn't do Y as good. You'll want distro Y if you want the better experience in Windows. Oh, you want to do that? X and Y aren't really up to snuff in that area yet, you'll want to look at distro Z. But Z doesn't do that or then as well." There's too much parity. You can't tell a Windows user to switch to linux when it takes a half dozen different linux installs to replicate their experience. And don't say that's the whole point - they can customize linux to their liking. Joe Schmoe doesn't want to heavily customize his machine at the beginning. He wants it to Just Work.
Why the comparisons to the MS blue screen of death? This isn't an operating system, it's a freakin' DVD player. This is one of those things the consumer expects to "just work". It's a simple appliance, like a microwave or a toaster. You wouldn't expect someone to debut some new toaster ("it makes your toast, but keeps your neighbor from eating it!") and have it not work. It is unacceptable for a DVD PLAYER to not work at a demo, and they should not be cut any slack!
Do people really use these widgets, dashboards, etc., especially if they DON'T have dual monitors? I've played around with Konfabulator on my laptop at home, and it just doesn't work well. I don't just stare at and monitor my desktop. If I'm at the computer, I'm working on something, and with a laptop, screen real estate is at a premium. I've played with them at work where I do have dual monitors, and while they are more useful in that setting, I find them a bit distracting, too. It's like I need a completely separate monitor for my widgets, and then another two monitors to do actual work!
If anything, all I want is more of a rotation of commercials during series or specifically, multi-part sports programming. Ie, I HATE having to watch the SAME commercials during the entire NBA playoffs, or March Madness, etc. They bombard you with the the whole game, EVERY GAME.

before the most recent 1200? Isn't that a small drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things?

Haha, nice. Now make it open source and FREE! :-P I'll have to check out EVE anyway!

ummmmm, since it's open source, can't you just take that part out and recompile it? granted you have the expertise, anyway....
