I think the economic term you are looking for is marginal cost. Wikipedia Marginal cost
In a perfectly competitive market the costs of all goods will aproach the marginal cost. You can see this with operating systems. I can't name an OS other than MS products that costs more than $0. I'm sure everyone can come up with some exceptions.
National Review is like a diet of plain oatmeal; substantive and healthy, but not what a man can live on.
Come on, you can live on oatmeal. Many people would kill to live on oatmeal. Thats the problem with liberals. Yeah some things in life suck, deal with it.
They went through all the effort of making the whole case into a heatsink. Cool. Why then paint the heatsink? painting reduces the thermal efficency compared to bare metal.
If we put it in a closet, than you have to walk that much further when Media Center gives you a BSOD and you have to walk to your computer and do a hard reset.
I'd rather work a blue collar job than a menial white collar job. Keep me interested, make it exciting. I laugh at my fellow college students who think its a good job to sit at the information desk and answer questions. I have had more fun performing manual labor. It was a blast running heavy equipment when the work was available.
OK I understand that some of you guys don't like tog. That's fine. He may have a poorly laid out site, thats fine too. But, those two facts don't make what he has to say any less relevant. I think he has many reasonable things to say.
One possible solution to this would be to have a timeout between clicking on an article and being able to post. I know that I am often tempted to post early to an article so that more people will read my comment.
Since everyone would be forced to suffer the same delay, users would be able to use that time effectively. The delay could allow users time to read the article
What if a large company got behind this. They would say, we will release the specs and let you open source them, everything chip design, reference board. But, we are the only manufacturer that is allowed to produce these boards that run this open source.
Would you work on it?
Do you think other people would
How long would it take to get to production?
What kind of premium would you pay for it?
The biggest obstacle I always have heard towards linux is that it is different from Windows, and thats what everyone knows. Why not spend some time training people who will use computers how to use linux. If they spent more time training them a lot of the problems with linux would be for naught. This would also solve a lot of the windows problems too. But if your going to spend the time training them, train them to do something useful rather than something which will give them more problems down the road.
It is a shame that the whole open source vs. closed source debate comes down to Linux vs Microsoft. Microsoft is an example of everything that is wrong with closed source, but there are examples of properly performing closed source software.
A computing device for providing instructional responses to a user, the computing device comprising: a processor; an input device; and an output device; wherein the computing device, in response to a task presented to a user: accepts unstructured input from the user on the input device; and determines whether an instructional response should be output.
Microsoft will be extracting licensing fees from tech support workers very soon. You heard it here first.
I heard that Balmer or Gates said that was specifically the reason they made such a big push to get Win95 ported to the chineese language. He said something like "we weren't stupid, we knew they would be pirating it, we wanted that, it locks them in"
I learned to drive on a stick, and took my drivers ED on an automatic. The driving instructor said that she could tell that I normally drive stick because I would come into turns faster than most people. I was used to the Friction/Suction braking of an engine having its full effect (it is friction/suction braking, not compression, the energy stroed in the compression stroke is returned in the power stroke).
I love driving stick. I toe and heel downshift almost all the time. Thats in a 2500 diesel pickup truck. It saves wear and tear on the synchros you know. I have also bump started my vehicles from time to time.
AMD and intel could make 100% pure silicon wafers. Which would mean no ddefects in processor runs and 100% yield. cheap chips, I know its a minor aplication, but still cool.
I remember around 1991 I played a really neat game on an apple called Ranger Rescue, or something similar. You flew a helicopter on a side scrolling display, then you retrieved your fallen compatriot and flew back. The game was really interesting, I probably have the name wrong.
EA will give you stability. 80 hours a week of thankless work for a check. Yeah you make $60,000 a year, but hey ITS STEADY.
How can you skip intro scenes

I'm sure there is a gnu/linux player that can do this. Where can I find one. Tell me more about how it is done. How does the DVD industry make it dificult to subvert the forced intros.
does it matter if the physical hardware is local, and then transmits the data over interstate lines. Is it legal if the FBI installs a key logger, that they have to physically access? What about a video camera that doesn't transmit pictures but records them to tape. The tape is then accessed without sending the data over comunication lines or radio, is that legal?
good point, never thought of that.

if windows was an airplane, what airplane would it be?

people recharge or refill cartridges right? refill them with opposite colors
not only that, but you could switch the yellow with another color ink in your toner cartridge. Then run the image through a graphics preprocessor.
