Any one of them stupid enough to get legal approval in the U.S. and operate is too stupid to make money long term anyways. The U.S. when it comes to gambling, or adult entertainment (two very big online industries) is very unstable because there are too many politicians that make moral decisions based upon their religion instead of what the people actually want.

Yes, or maybe it's legit. I understand not trusting "the man" and political tactics, but there are definately a percentage of attempts that the FBI are affecting. The people that work there care just as much about protecting the country as you do, even if they always can't do something about it. I wonder sometimes how many "attempts" they don't publicize, simply to prevent the "other side" from knowing what they are up to. Hey I don't trust the higher-level government just like most people, but not all of them are idiots.

While the guy from Microsoft wrote an informative post (so I can't blame him for anything), I do agree with the parent about confusing updates and ever-changing technologies. There is nothing more frustrating than relying on a code base that changes drastically (hint: DirectX), especially when finding the right documentation for the right version can even be a challenge. 1.1 to 2.0 documented? Sure, to a point. But try to find code to do the same things in MDX1 that will work the same in MDX2. The changes are drastic, I'm sure for the better, but there seems to be little long term vision/shared goals within the company. Just a constant upchurning of changes. I mean really, if you can't get your product structure right the first two revisions, maybe you should let someone else do it.

  16. XXX extension on .xxx registry sues US government · · Score: 1

There are good arguments on both sides, for and against the top level domain. 1) Those who are for it, want it because it puts porn in it's own distinguishable category, makes it easier to filter if need be (provided there is regulation of its use, and non-use, which only works in North America). 2) The people that don't want it, for one the porn industry in general, because it makes it easier to filter not only for individual computers, but for large networks and possibly ISP's (which is good AND bad for the industry, and lets face it it's a big money industry), and because it attempts to classify content on the web (not DNS's purpose at all). When there is too much for and against it, you can't expect ICANN to approve it when there is too much opposition on both sides. Hence, don't change anything. The stakes could be big financially for the porn industry, which don't kid yourself folks, would affect the networks, credit card companies, some banks, and associated businesses financially as well. This could be negative, or positive, which is a risk. Billions of dollars here in our country alone. Do I think there should be a classification? Yes. But my friend says no. I think polls would reflect the same.

There aren't enough investors out there to put money on risky software development projects, so we are often forced to take big risks ourselves when it comes to ideas we are passionate about. And frankly, people with lots of money often don't understand what we're doing.

I welcome the day when adware/spyware companies start going out of business. These companies should expect that these are not long term ventures, and most people are very irratated by their software no matter how they try to present it. Yes, a small economy surrounds the business of spyware, but it's business based on mass numbers (i.e. casualties) and not by innovation, or any sort of usefullness. Just like the old days of selling blind-link traffic and 404 traffic, except we knew it had its days numbered.
