Remind me again which Android phone had such a terrible design that the company was required to give away 'bumpers' to everyone who bought one?
The iPhone 4 has signal attenuation like every cell phone, radio, television antenna on the planet when you connect the two poles of the antenna, even with a bumper.
As long as radio signals are in use, there will be this phenomena, even on those phones with internal antenna.
If that's the reason you didn't buy one, or got an Android, you are just as ignorant as those that picked up the free bumper to "fix" it.

OK, first of all, maybe I should reiterate what I meant by "Hobby OS". I should have said that Linux DESKTOP environments and systems will never go beyond Hobby status.
Keep in mind that I run MANY MANY MANY Linux servers, including VM servers running Windows. And I wouldn't run anything else on my CORE service systems.
I refer to the current state of the Desktop environment compared to Windows or any other Desktop OS.
The wireless chipsets that are put into MILLIONS of laptops around the world are pretty common. (Centrino tried to standardize these in the Intel world) I have owned 3 Centrino laptops. Acer, IBM, and Dell. All have a similar chipset. NONE of them have had support even close to what Windows (Even the new Mac laptops are based on these chipsets...they can do it in UNIX but can't do it in LINUX?) have.
You are correct in my frustration. I have been trying for YEARS to get Linux workstations out in my field. The closest I can come is running Thin Station clients that connect to a Terminal Server. Most management won't go for it. Three reasons, MOBILITY, COMPATIBILITY, and SUPPORT.
As for my bitching and moaning, it's well justified. I agree you need to be cutting edge, however...when you don't take care of the technology that already exsists (ABG) why should we be concerned or even care about something that isn't even on the radar for the next 3 years? (S)
Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Linux and all it stands for. And I really would love to roll out some productive workstations, mobile or not.
Linux does very well in a "controlled" environment, or if you would like to purchase it from Novell, RedHat or other big distro.
It's lightweight, fast, and cheap (free in most cases).
I'm talking about certain 802.11 A, B, G chipsets that have been on the market for years.
I have no problems loading up an Apache webserver, IP-chains firewall or Postfix MTA on hardware with no peripherals other that a hard drive, floppy, CD-ROM, and an Intel NIC. It will run for years (provided the hard drive doesn't fail). Don't even get me started on RAID controllers.
My point is that Apple found out long ago, that if they can control what hardware gets into their systems, they can control how well it performs with their OS.
If you want it to be a Desktop OS so bad...Maybe the Linux crowd should stop trying to dig into Microsoft and the manufacturers that are in bed with them.
Start an actual list of hardware that has STRONG "out-of-the-box" linux support. (not some guy in his parents basement got this to work with a wrapper, and an old windows 3.1 driver, running in wine)
Next time I go to buy a laptop, I would even consider Linux, if it had the same stability as the Mac Book Pro I now have.
I used to go for the challenge of getting Linux to run on different machines and devices. But the complete lack of support and bickering is counter-productive.
#1 The ability to install (downgrade) to Windows XP straight from the installation menu.
#2 A full list of the software that the new installation WILL break or not be compatible with, along with a calculator to calculate how much the installation is REALLY going to cost you.
#3 5 versions of the same garbage, but call it Home Garbage, Business Garbage, Premium Home Garbage, Premium Business Garbage...and for those that want all the garbage..."ULTIMATE Garbage".
#4 A full list of the software you will have to buy in order to get the same functionality out of the box you get with OS X/iLife.
#5 A full DVD copy of the OS X version "du jour".
Ummm...Karma to Burn.

"preliminary support of the future 802.11s wireless mesh standard"
How about getting b,g,a working for standard (intel, broadcom, atheros) chipsets first.
For fucks sake, these technologies have been out for DECADES. It's about time that I can take a standard laptop, load up Ubuntu, Fedora, or any other popular distro, and hot have to pay out my ass for support to get wifi to work, or do somersaults installing wrappers, shitty second rate drivers or shitty GUI interfaces to get it to work.
I'm gonna get flamed, trolled, and told that I should write the apps myself.
Sorry, not everyone is a developer. I just administer and support the servers.
It's hard to push for LINUX desktops or OpenSource technologies when they release a new kernel every week, that doesn't fix the most common issues.
Say I go to the National Jamboree this year and meet you there.
We hang out, do some competitions, trade stories and patches, see some concerts and then go home as friends.
How is your sexuality a factor in that scenario? How would that change my opinion of you as a friend if it never came up?
That is what open mindedness truly is. Neither of our sexual orientations matter. We got together, had a great time.
We can go on and on about what the "acceptable" norm is in society. We can talk evolution, percentages, blah blah blah.
The fact of it is that NONE of it matters. Scouting is a much more wholesome and fulfilling experience, minus the sexuality discussions.
LBGT tolerance isn't taught by FORCING your way into the organization via the court systems, etc. It is taught by seeing people doing everyday people things...without clouding it up with sexuality, racial, or any other issues. That generates tolerance.
Kids are kids. They are judgmental of anything that is "different". What makes the difference is how the adults react.
"Hey, Jimmy is gay." The scoutmasters response? "So what." It doesn't matter. Lets get back to knots.
Congrats on the Eagle, it was a proud moment in my life too.
I'm gonna get flamed for this or even trolled, but it has to be said. If you think about it...I'm right, not a bigot.
Look, there was a time when what went on behind your closed bedroom doors didn't really matter. It's not a lie, it's respect for your fellow persons private life. I don't really care as long as you are teaching the fundamental scouting values.
Where the problems come in is when you blatantly let it be known your sexual orientation. It should play no relevance.
There used to be (20 some odd years ago) a health section of the BSA hand book. Never mentioned sexuality. Nor should it have.
It is not the place of the BSA to teach sexual relationships, or practices. That has always been their stance.
It's not what scouting is about. Scouting is about observing ALL nationalities, religions, and view points with respect, and lessons based on fundamental outdoorsman (or woman if you so choose) and survival skills, and using those lessons to be good stewards to society through charity.
When some scoutmaster lets it be known what his/her sexuality is, and not focusing on those above listed values, the focus changes to that individual, NOT scouting.
Booting a scoutmaster for being gay is wrong. Booting a scoutmaster for sharing his sexual lifestyle with scouts, is the right choice...
The reason? It doesn't matter what sexuality the scoutmaster is. It's not an issue, nor a concern of the scouts. It plays NO relevance to the core values of scouting. The same reason you shouldn't be talking about your sexuality to kids at a daycare center. Those children's parents are trusting you with their well being and you have NO right to impose those values through scouting.
If you chose to do so, the BSA has every right to let you go, or refuse your services.
As for funding the BSA? Why wouldn't you give funds to an organization dedicated to the well being of the youth that promotes social responsibility?
I can think of far worse organizations that receive WAY more funding that promote crime, drugs, perpetual poverty and social irresponsibility (i.e. the unchecked welfare systems).

Journalists can be bought anywhere, in cyberland and on the street.
It's very apparent on how fucking BENT the television and print media is. Look at the most recent lovefuck Obamafest '08.
The web is a great place to get "real" investigative news to the street without the bias filters. However, credibility is a factor.
Maybe the old Who, What, When, Where, Why, How should be the format of choice.

Which is why most Windows users wear helmets.
Why would you expect anything different?
It's the combination of iTunes 8, Windows Vista and the latest mailer virus that overloads the RAM causing the blue screen.
Solution:
Buy an OS that can control its own RAM and not freak out when an app runs away. (i.e. OSX, UNIX, LINUX, blah blah)
How can I be out of money? I still have all these checks?

The closest manufacturer to do this with linux is Asus.
