One could use a botnet to execute the DOS attack in that case.
A strategy which might prove a bit more effective is to present the user with a captcha after three failed password attempts. This will not be overly annoying for real users, but it will significantly increase the cost of an attack.
So explaining operator overloading is much simpler than explaining the System class and its static members? Changing the meaning of the traditional bitshift operator to mean something completely different is a very bad and confusing idea IMO.
So if American programmers have trouble finding jobs, maybe they should come over here. Programmer salaries are unfortunately lower, but we have jobs, everybody speaks English, and pot is legal (just restrict it to the weekends, okay?).
I never said it was a realistic possibility, or even that it would be a good idea. I just said I would like it.
Programming is a hobby as well as a profession for me. The programming languages I use at home are much more advanced then the ones I get to use professionally. This is frustrating at times.
I don't think I've ever been compared to anything as horrible as "goatse guy" in my life. Was it anything I said in particular that triggered your wrath?
Where I come from (Holland), experience is valued much higher than education. I started out as a junior webdesigner about 10 years ago. Then I landed a job as a sysop for a large scale J2EE platform. Now I design and implement service oriented integration solutions.
You might think that all sounds a bit "enterprisy", and you'd be right. If I could have it my way I would be writing Haskell or Python for a living. But never the less, I get to work on big, complicated, mostly interesting engineering projects without any kind of degree, and I don't think the job well is going to dry up any time soon, despite economic unrest.
The bad economy might even give you a competitive edge since you don't have large student loans to pay back, and can afford to work for a slightly lower wage.
programming.reddit.com and compsci.reddit.com both have nice articles and discussion at times. However, I don't think any internet discussion site will again reach the greatness that was Slashdot 8-10 years ago.
It has be hypothized the same thing could happen with hormonal contraceptives, ultimately causing infertility and thus the extinction of the human race.
It could be another pseudo-scientific rumor though... I didn't investigate.
I agree there are a lot of misguided attempts to help people in third world countries. This is in no way exclusive to the TED conference. However, you should keep in mind these people, these "captains of industry", are getting enthausiastic on the prospect of helping other people. Their methods might be flawed, but the intention is there non the less.
I find TED nauseous and fake: it peddles "appropriate" technology that only a junior-high-school-dropout housewife would find interesting.
Many of TED's attendees are top of their field. Not all of them might be likeable people, but I'd say very few of them are at a "junior-high-school-dropout housewife" level. Yet most of the TED presentations end with a standing ovation.
Personally Ive seen some pretty interesting TED talks, addressing subjects other than the ones I normally think/read/hear about. Most of the speakers are very passionate about their work, which makes it a joy to listen to them.
"The little heater with an AA rechargeable battery in it for the fan, that you recharge at the local solar panel" -- for God's sake, do you know how many times the income of the people that are the target of this shit do those solar panels cost ?
How about dropping farm subsidies and giving them a chance to sell their food ?
The I agree on farm subsidies being a bad thing, but TED is about Technology Entertainment and Design, not about saving the poor people.
The rumor is that Scarlet will be forced to deploy the same software as MySpace uses (Audible Magic [CC]) to filter illegal P2P traffic from the legal.
I don't know how the mentioned software works, but if they are going to distinguish between legal and illegal P2P traffic, they will have to analyse the content. If that's the case, I think encrypted content can only be blocked by employing a whitelist containing fingerprints of legal content.
2. Install the JACK system. It's used as a hub to connect multiple audio sources, programs and outputs. It's in the Ubuntu repositories so you can install it using synaptic.
3. Install a multitrack audio recording/editing program. Jokosher, Ardour and Traverso are the most populair ones i think. I don't know what's available from the repositories.
That should do it for recording music from an external source.
At job interviews, I always mention "hacking" as one of my interests. If the interviewer reacts shocked or confused, I know I don't want to work for that company. I've been escorted out by security more than once.
While it may be true that the computer illiterate probably won't be held liable for their unsecured network, if the **AA can prove you DO know what you are doing, you won't be able to get away with it. Particularly, if you found out how to secure your system and didn't act on it within a reasonable amount of time.
Why is that? Is it illegal to have an open access point?
I definitely know how to secure my wireless network, but I choose not to. I want people visiting my place to be able to easily connect to my network and the internet. Exchanging lengthy WPA keys every time is too much of a hassle.
I fully agree. Ultima Online had this, and although it was frustrating at times (getting mob-killed 3 times in a row), it really made the game feel like a 'real' world.
My ideal MMO:
No obvious (visible) level or skill stats
Player driven 'story' (maybe employing DM mode for unique quest generation)
Focused on social aspects instead of mindless killing of NPCs
Player driven economy
Rich crafting system
Oblivion quality environments
PS. I'm no hardcore MMO player, so I might be describing a game which already exists.
The open source java implementation (OpenJDK) is a separate project. http://www.sun.com/software/opensource/java/
That would be my PS3, sir! I've never been this insulted!
...
Just kidding. I don't own any console. Just my Sony Vaio laptop :P

Biblically Forbidden Fornication?

Please disregard parent's advise ;)

Thank you for taking the time to write such detailed corrections. It's greatly appreciated.
What the hell?

Not always... During a lunar eclipse the moon isn't lit (directly) by the sun.
</nitpick>
Why reference a reference when you can reference the source directly?

No, I swear that's all. No further questions or anything.

Good AJAX sites don't work like that. It breaks the browser's navigation and refresh buttons and it doesn't degrade gracefully.
