  1. Not Google's Responsibility on Microsoft's IE7 Search Box Bugs Google · · Score: 1

"I notice that in my version of Firefox the search box defaults to Google, and that the pulldown menu of pre-entered options doesn't even include MSN Search, but Google seems to have been oddly quiet on that front for the many years prior to IE7 that Firefox has made this feature available.""

Google does not control Firefox development or standards. It is up to Microsoft to assert to Firefox that they are being infringed upon and ask the Firefox development community include MSN as a search option. Google is only responsible for fighting their own battles and there is nothing about fair trade practices that say a company is required to make an argument for their competitors. Of course Microsoft will never ask this of the Firefox development community because that would provide acknowledgment of Firefox as realistic alternative to IE6/7. The last thing Microsoft wants right now while trying to roll out IE7 is to give any additional legitimacy to Firefox as true competitor and alternative.

  2. Seems a bit slow at times on IE The Great Microsoft Blunder? · · Score: 1

Maybe there is a configuration option I am missing or something but IE7 honestly seems very slow at times. Certain web pages I go to just are not loading very quickly. Such as this morning I opened http://www.usatoday.com/ thinking I would take IE7 out for a bit longer of a test drive. It took a longer ammount of time for the USAToday home page to load in IE7 than for me to get frustrated with the wait, open Firefox and start reading the details of a particular cover story article. By the way it did finally load but it took almost 35 to 40 seconds to do so. I am assuming there is a logical explaination though because that was so slow I cannot imagine anyone using IE7 if this were a comon occurance. However, I do like the new stripped down look of the interface though very simliar to firefox and opera.

Honestly i cannot decide which is my favorite browser but neither IE6 nor 7 are even in the running. Sometimes I use Opera other times I use firefox as each has small things I like about them more based off whatever it is I am currently doing. These days i pretty much only use IE if I go to a page that requires ActiveX support and it flashes up that my browser is unsupported by this site. By the way, to me those sites seem to be getting fewer and farther between all the time.

A Postmortem or "After Action Report" if you were brought up through the military :) is what most good IT Managers go through after a project to research what if anything went wrong during the implementation phase. It allows you to outline the implementations faults so that it never happen again. My IT department does a postmortem any time there is a major issue that arrises. The postmortem is then submitted to Sr. Management who usually only glances at it before tossing it away. However the postmortem analyzes what went wrong, what was done to resolve the issue and what steps have been taken to prevent the issue from happening again in the future.

The reason is when when a company as large as Dell chooses a particular distribution they tend to make a statement. It gives the false perception that one distribution is better than the other because a large company like Dell says so. This could also create a backlask within the OSS community considering that everyone has their favorite distro and probably have little desire to switch to another. By remaining neutral Dell can let the market and customers decide for themselves. It's actually a good position from the point of both Dell and the consumer. Let the consumer decide how they want their system to look. This is the philosphy that has made Dell so successful today. Well that and no one can touch their after sale service solution.

However, we did seem to completely drop the ball anything resembling education reform. But we can be reassured that while our young people won't see any better quality of education out of this congressional session at the very least our young cheerleaders will be spared a future of becoming a harlot due to improper dance moves, thank God for the strong state wide stand cheerleading decency!

    ARGH!!!!!!!!

So, once again important issues facing the state's citizenry have been brushed aside in an effort to stroke the moral pride of the stupid and useless but highly vocal right wing of my beloved Republican party. God it makes me proud to be a minority with a the majority. Gah! I assume a special session will now be called again by our Governor. Maybe this time something will get done and the Democrats in congress won't feel the need to flee the state in order to prevent a vote. I mean it is really embarrassing when the Governor of your state threatens to have a warrant issued for the Democrat members of the state congress in order to have Texas State Troopers bring congressmen and congresswomen back to the state so that voting can occur.

Sometimes I wonder how in the heck with anything gets done in Texas when my state's politics are so completely out of control.

Well, here is my opinion and we have been used four seperate satellite setups for about two years now. For normal web browsing the DirectWay Satellite system is not much better than dial-up and in some cases much worse. The more individual files that the website has the slower the response time is from the satellite. We installed several on the outskirts of three cities to provide a link to our remote offices were broadband was not an option.

First off, talk with the technical engineers because the sales people forget to mention that some traffic like ICMP and others are automatically placed at the bottom of the satellite systems queue. This is why you will see things like a 400ms+ ping time. What we learned is that if you use your link for downloading files it is great. Once the connection is established it goes beautifully. The problem with game playing or even intense web browsing is that you are always transmitting data and files that may be small but the fact that it requires multiple file transfers is the bad part. When you think about it, how many files does your web browser download when you go to a website core html, pics, flash, audio, etc? The more individual files on a site really causes problems for the system's performance. Like I said though when we used it we did data batching scenario and would compress large quantities of data into a single file and then FTP it to a drop box for pick up in our corporate office at regular batch intervals. In this type of scenario we got great performance with a several hundred K/sec file transfer rate.

If you want to deploy any type of remote desktop software you better make it VNC with best compression or forget it. Even the use of VNC will turn out to be a lesson in humility and frustration.

In my opinion the system really stinks for anything other than large file downloads. It just does not seem to be very versatile.
