And that piece on Van Jones? Play a lot of spooky music, put a grainy filter on the videos, and take a couple of quotes from an angry and radicalized past (if you had been arrested for protesting social injustice Im sure you'd be mad too) and somehow link them to the man's current line of work. Also, keep emphasizing that he was arrested at protests like it was because he was in the wrong, ignoring that lots of people are falsely arresting during protests because of our police-lite-state

I didn't know anything about Van Jones before watching this video and to me he seems like a stand up guy who is a very ardent and very vocal supporter of human and civil rights.

Get out and do things, anything really.

Nobody just shows up to your door and asks if you want to date or hang out.

Lots of above posters have suggested great things. The biggest thing to remember is to just DO SOMETHING.

Go to a class - cooking, dancing, photography, poetry, reading, etc
Develop a physical hobby - working out, martial arts, running, biking, climbing, hiking, tennis, soccer, basketball, softball
    Go to a book store

    Go to the mall
    Go to a bar
    Go to a club
Yes, online works too. Match.com, craigslist, meetup, etc etc
If you want to do geeky things, find a D&D game, or a LAN party, or whatever
Probably the best place to find geeky girls is on a college campus. Go find out where the engineering and computer science departments are or find out where those people like to get together.

The thing about being social is - you just have to BE social. Put yourself in social activities and social situations and you will have the opportunity to be social!

It's not that I didn't have fun with L4D, and it kept my attention for about a month or so after release, but pretty quickly all that content was devoured. Playing with friends we had everything down to a science. Only when playing with random people did it feel dangerous and exciting again because there would be varying levels of player skill.

With no updates and expansions my friends and I quickly lost interest and went on to play other games.

The sort of irony I feel about this is I would *gladly* pay for all the content we've been given for Team Fortress 2. I still play TF2 quite regularly and have gotten more entertainment out of it than any game in recent memory.

Maybe I'll just buy L4D2 as sort of my TF2 "tax"

Worse still is when the fact of "legitimacy" is then used to judge the person(s) in entirely separate venues, such as job related security background checks conducted on the otherwise innocent family members. Although society may change and the "legitimacy" question cease to matter as much as it used to, others will hang on longer and tighter, such as in this example, where the employers will view it more negatively than the population because they'll be looking for the potential problems, and pursue them on this basis "just in case". How about when a particularly horrible crime goes unsolved, yet the authorities say it was commited by someone with "similar" DNA to you/your family?

Im sure that will go over well with potential employers, the public, significant others, or anyone else.

Sure, there are PLENTY of kids who came to the school because they thought if they played game, they could make them and end up dropping out or unemployed. But I saw the same things when I was going for a C.S. degree at a "traditional" college, and anyone who's been to any type of college will tell you there are people who join that major who have the wrong expectations and should not be there.

Im not going to defend all "game schools", but I think it's unfair to put a blanket dismissal to all of them. If you find a good one (make sure they aren't just taking your money) and take it seriously, you can learn skills that will apply directly to getting a job. I have many friends with C.S. and other degrees from nice universities and state schools that have no real-world applicable knowledge.

In short, I have my degree from a "game school" and currently my major, "Visual & Game Programming", has a 100% hire rate among graduates - all employed at film (Pixar, ILM) or game companies (ArenaNet, Perpetual)

Usually these places have lots of coders who can quickly put the algorithm/equation into practice, but it's definately useful to have strong math skills with at least some understanding of how to get ideas into code.

I know several people who have gotten jobs at Texas Instruments and ILM. Math is becomming big in the VFX industry with things like physics, fluid & cloth simulations, and soft-body interactions(and more rendering of course).
