I would like someone to address what I see as a far greater issue.
clock radios can be annoying due to the interference caused be cellphones, but there are some cases where the interference can be downright deserters!
I am referring to professional audio systems. We have three theaters that I work in, 2 blackboxes and one mainstage. The mainstage 32-channel board is unaffected by cellphones, however the two smaller boards are.
Is there any sort of add on that can be used to shield audio cables from cellphones? We run a line level out of the mixer to two powered speakers in one blackbox, and the interference is particularly bad, seeing as the audience is literally right above the line level wire.
Any ideas?
I would venture to say consumerism is not the driving force. As far as I understand it, the vast majority of graphics tech is a pushed from the top down. Let me explain.
Workstation cards have always been more powerful than consumer cards due to the nature of their work. Often the consumer version is simply just a toned down version with baseline functions removed.
So in short, this is trickle down tech from the professional market. They're releasing them because they can make money at it, and because there IS a demand for it.
In the old days computers were tools, then they were tools with fun stuff on them. Now we have a whole category of people referred to as 'computer jocks' who instead of buying an expensive car and driving it through campus blow money on computer related stuff even though they don't need to.
wow, thats pretty weird! sounds about what something like this would do as well............ accidently friendly fire with a high powered laser? iffy but pretty cool to think about. also, a bit useless if you use it in that manor, i mean, one little hole doesnt do too much unless you hit the amo dump or something of that sort
Its cool to see its in public light, but a friend of mine actually worked for a company that designed the power units for this, and other high powered lasers. One of the more impressive ones was mounted on a flatbed truck (this sucker was huge, or so i am told) and could, I BS you not, burn through a tanks armor in under 30 seconds. Very scary, very cool. Now, i cannnot confirm the legitimacy of this, but i can say for sure that i trust this guy, he isnt the kind to BS.
A while ago on slashdot, someone posted an artical about how fungi could survive in hard vacume and solar radiation on the side of the ISS for.... two weeks. Now, lets give the little buggers credit and say maybe a month and a half in space... and how long did it take our probes to reach jupiter?
Not to put any spoilserz into this post, but i have been lucky enough to see the movie twice, at the may 26th screening in providence, and then again on june 23rd in las vegas. Let me put it this way, the movie has perfect diolaug, Wash, Jane and River have some great lines that i cannot help but quoting in daily life. The plot is great, it explains any of the major plotholes that were left open in the 14 episodes. River becomes a real member of the crew. But its not a totaly happy movie ether.

Simply put, i did not spell check that, and no, i hardly ever use email, mostly forums.
I myself am 14 years old, when in was 12, i had amazing scores on tests and other school related things, however after i have gotten more into computers (iv built 3 for myself, 10 for friends) my schoolwork has declined. However blaming this on email, for me at least, is stupid. Its not email that hurts my schoolwork, it is computers in general. They are just so damn interesting, i have learned more from my time on computers then i ever have in school, the only poblem is, i am not learning about the metric system, i am teaching myself astrophysics and reading steaven hawlking, instead of shakspear.
I would like to do better in school, however i find it very hard for me to motivate myself to do my science homework, because i already know it, and if i am not learning something new, i have signifigently less entergy to put into it. There is no cure, as far as i can see it, besides throwing away my computer, which i will never do.
Its depressing, in a way, to go from A's to C's, but at the same time, i am learning a much more valuable skill and learning about more interesting things which also have use in the world.
For me, its not Email that is killing my schoolwork, it is information. I have a drive to seek out info, and thanks to the internet, There is more information out there that i wish to learn then i can without my school work suffering.

This is almost as bad as when Microsoft made IE part of your operating system. before (in win98 ) you could remove IE and get it to still work, now, if you remove it you virtually kiss your OS goodbye.
Its all part of their strategy, like donating computers to schools, your not being nice, your getting kids hooked on MS word at age 8! I have to say, Microsoft is one of the best companies ever if you just look at what they do as a business, but their products are crap.

I work at a store, and we charge $85 an hour for software work, and $65 for hardware. I, being a 14 year old, charge $50 an hour for software stuff. I'll build a PC for someone, and ill make somewhere between $100 to $300 depending on the value of the system. Since i don t have a shop or any expenses, besides computer parts that is ^_^.
Dont worry, this is my though on drugs, I get nevous flashing my BIOS, and thats just a $130 piece of hardware, no fucking way I'm gona mess with my brain.

First, I actualy am 14 years old.
Next, being in an enviorment with many other kids, from the ages of 11 to 15 (6th 7th 8th grade in the same building) AND being a complete outsider there, I have observed some strange things. First of all, my school is a total of ~700 kids, within that, there are many different kinds of kids. But the most startling group is the group that relats to this topic (molestation). I personaly have heard of ten people in the school that have had sexual encounters with an adult. There are probly more, but being the outsider i am, people do not tell me things. Out of these 10, three were raped, but the other seven actualy WANTED the adult to do whatever the hell they did. This i find highly disturbing for reasons i will not bore you with. But one thing i will say, i would not have sex with anyone at my age, why you would want to do it with a 40 year old is beyond me...
I know some of you have said that you find people of the age of 16 stupid, dull and boring. I completely agree, i have three friends under the age of 28, the rest are ether 28 or older. But if you look at the artical, 'Roy' did not as much to be in love with children, as he saw them as a soucre of sexual activity. I think that is true for most of the people like him, though i obviously cannot be sure of that.
As people mature, their idea of the kind of personality they love changes, as someone said, a seventy year old may may still find a 16 year old to be atractive, but not desirable as a wife due to her mental imaturity. I think THAT is what changes, the level of maturity you desire in a partner. I forget what movie, but a guy is hypnotized to see people he would love as a person as "hot supermodels", i think to some extent, the brain does this as you get older, so you can still find a 45 year old cute or atractive.

I'm 14, that means its normal for me to like girls around that age, find them atractive, ect. Now, we asume as people age, the mature mentaly as well, but this asumption can not always be entirely correct. As my 22 year old friend once said, "If at 16 I found a girl in my class hot, what has changed to make me NOT find a 16 year old hot?"
To break this down, simply, there was no major change in his atraction to girls between 16 and 22, but unlike when he was 16, it is no loger 'right' for him to find a 16 year old atractive, now, the youngest he 'should' find atractive is more like 20.

Yes, it would drive space colinization, but that is the optomistic view, how about if instead, humans become comodities, humans would become the perfect slaves, they are cheep to feed, and last 1000 years without loosing the ability to work! buy a child off some poor parent for $200 and you have your own slave for 999 years to come. It could work in a factory, or anything, with a very low upkeep cost.
Alright, Slashdot as a whole has a highly educated, engaged and interesting population that post on it, however, we are but a fraction of the people in this world, i am asuming that the majority of people here are in the top 5% of the inteligence bracket. This being said, that leaves 95% of the population of the world to be ether less mature, informed or inteligent in one form or another. Now, imagine everyone on shashdot picking the most anoying, stupid, ignorent idiot they know and making them live for the next 1000 years. THEN, factor in that a new generation of people comes along every aprox 25 years, so in that span of 1000 years, you do not only have the original anoying people, you now have X to the 40th power (X being the original number of anoying people, 40 being the number of generations in 1000 years, asuming each generation there is the same percent of anoying people) (sry if my math is flawed, but i hope you can ignore that and get the idea im trying to say)
So you can see how within the spann of just 10 generations the earth would become increadable overpopulated.
some scientific breathroughs should not be made, others should, but i have to say if they found a way to make people live signifigently longer lives, it would just end up as a disaster in the end.
But with a laptop, you do not need a CD drive or a floppy drive, those just add to the weight of the laptop and the thickness of it. a USB flash drive (thumb, pen, w/e drive) can hold all of your data on it, often even more then you can fit on a cd (1-4 gigs available) making CD burners obsolite. Now if you want to watch a movie, rip it to your hard drive and transfer it onto the laptop, no need for a dvd drive ether! I am not saying that Apple and IBM are the only ones who KNOW how to make good laptops, i am just saying they are the only ones that make CHEEP good laptops, sorry for not specifing that. But to get a light dell laptop you need to spend signifigently more. As far as i see it, people who want a gaming laptop are just stupid, the only reason laptops should be powerfull is if you need it for your job.
Also, cheep laptops from dell, compaq, hp, ect often fall apart or are made with junky exteriors.
P.S. We would be fine with a pentium 3 CPU if microsoft didnt keep reseasing a new OS that takes more power to run >_
