Too bad regarding KDE. (I did try current KDE Neon in a VM briefly, well I don't like the default theme and fonts much...)

No kidding, KDE seems to go out if it's way to use the ugliest and the most 'eye burning' theme in existence. I suspect their main supporters are optometrist

I like KDE, but it took me a very long time to get colors and setting to the point were I can use it without eye strain for 5 hours. Gnome3 is terrible to use but their theme is like getting an eye massage :)

  15. First of all the cracker will need to get the password hashes, if that can be done I think you have more issues than an 8 character password. I cannot comment on how to get windows password hashes (have not be on it in well over a decade), but on a properly locked down and encrypted modern Linux/BSD getting shadow is almost impossible.

At work we are being moved to a minimum 15 character PW which is changed it every 90 days, all I can say is I am real glad I do now work on corporate help desk. 90% of they time the will be getting calls about forgotten passwords. yes people can use sentences but you know as well as I do that is not going to happen for over 80% of the users

This fix was applied due to the bluetooth vulnerability that happens a year or two ago. So far not anywhere near as bad as windows, but the big distros seem to be moving in the same direction also

If you care about security, don't run intel, or disable Intel's insecure SMT implementation.

Correct, OpenBSD defaults to disabling SMT and they stated some hardware there is no option to disabled SMT. So having an option in Linux to disabled SMT is probably all that is needed. Seems Linux is jumping through hoops to fix hardware issues that seem to never have an end.
