In case you hadn't already noticed, the US already has enough warheads to destroy most of the planet a number of times over

Actually this is a myth too. Even at the height of the cold war the combined US and Soviet nuclear arsenals couldn't "wipe out most of the planet". We certainly have enough nukes to kill a shit ton of people and fuck up weather patterns (again, not by as much as some people would have you think but certainly by a noticeable amount) but barring problems from the general war likely to happen before/after/during a nuclear exchange we wouldn't be sent back to the stone age or anything and how much the quality of life would drop for survivors would be heavily dependent on location (are there a lot of targets up wind of you that need ground-bursts to destroy, are there a lot of targets in general around you, how badly is your local infrastructure damaged, if the federal government holds it together how high on their "to save" list is your area, etc...) .

I totally agree that we need more nuclear plants and the most economical way to do that is to use fuel reprocessing. Just from a numbers perspective it's really the only option if we want to maintain our current quality of life, our current population and still have the excess energy to improve and move forward. At least until we make fusion work.

An important part of learning to do something on the magnitude of colonizing another planet is doing similar but easier things and learning from them.

Furthermore, we already have the tech we need to colonize Mars. We could've done it year ago in fact. If we ever want to get this done we have to get our thumbs out of our asses, get out there and just do it. With the speed of innovation we've had in recent history it's all to easy to fall into the "I'll just wait for it to get a little better" trap and never accomplish anything.

To use a computer analogy, look at flash memory. Right now it's getting cheaper and gaining capacity exponentially. If you have a specific price/performance target, have a good idea how long it's going to take to hit that target and are cool with waiting that long then you can get yourself a good deal, but sometimes you just need to transfer some fucking files today, and sure, you'll feel silly when your expensive high capacity thumbdrive is the 10 dollar bargain in a few months but it's certainly better than getting fired because you couldn't get important files where they needed to go, right?

Likewise, space colonization is going to keep getting better and cheaper as time goes on but natural disasters don't wait and if we don't use the tech we have now there's not only less incentive to develop better versions of it for future use but less practical input on just what needs improving in said future versions.

PS: Hey slashdot, it's 2009, html is simple enough but it's damn annoying to have to add the tags for something as simple as paragraphs in 2009. If you're going to go around fucking up everything in sight anyway can we atleast get WYSIWYG already?

You live in a tiny, mountainous, island nation populated mostly by sheep and hobbits. This is not true for everyone.

In America there are large stretches of highway that have a speed limit close to, or higher than this speed as well large stretches of road that have a De-Facto speed limit close to or higher than this. For example, the Washington DC Beltway more or less consists of continuous 80 MPH bumper to bumper traffic. On some stretches of the Beltway at some times of day someone going less than 70 or 80 miles per hour represents a hazard not just to their self but to everyone on the road due to the disruption in traffic they create.

In addition, there are places like rural Montana or the Autobahn in Germany where there is no posted speed limit. Now I don't think a teenager who can't be trusted to have complete control of the vehicle should be driving on these sorts of roads but the fact remains that a vehicle limited to 80 on them would be a serious hazard.
