I think you're looking at it in the wrong way. While I think that "critiquing" is complete bullshit, there are intellectual types who enjoy looking at "art" "poetry" and "music" only because of the "critiquing" While I don't mean to portray them in a negative light, but they are the same types of people who will exclude some things as art poetry or music simply because it "isn't intellectual enough", meaning that it hasn't gone through the critiquing, so it must not be "high level art."

You get the same kind of reaction with rap. I know that 90% of it is about "bitches and hoes" but I have heard some amazingly articulate poetry wrapped in rap which is instantly discredited as "real poetry" simply because it is labelled as rap. I know for a fact that if you were to present some of this rap on paper, it would somehow have more credibility with these types.

I guess what I'm getting at here is that if some video game is ever going to be viewed as an art form, it has to comply with this ages-old system of (for lack of a better term) snootability. The only way you could possibly sway these snooty art critic types is to present it in the same fashion as a painting, or a sculpture, or like the "classical" music.

While I didn't read the article, I can't comment on how high or low level the critiquing for Katamari, but I imagine if could be a step towards getting some form of art credibility for video games.

Although I not a huge Starwars fan, I find a lot of the credit for the "master plan" can be attributed to the authors of the Star Wars novels. They're the ones with the creative drive to continue the story they love. I think that if episodes 7, 8, and 9 ever get made, they should be written by Micheal A. Stackpole, who seems to generally know what he's doing.

I was implying that with the new Toshiba 3-layer HD-DVDs which can have either 2 layers of regular DVD (~8.5gb) and one layer of HD-DVD(~35gb) or 2 layers of HD-DVD(~70gb) and one layer of regular DVD (~4.7gb) the game developers could say, put the regular game on the regular DVD layer(s) (with only regular definition textures and CGI/FMVs) and then maybe put the ultra high resolution textures and CGI/FMVs on the HD-DVD layers. Then the game could say, look at what model you have (the regular DVD, or the HD-DVD drive) and then decide which layer to load from.

This would not segment the market at all because the people who want the extra HD content to go on their nice $5000 HDTV could buy the HD-DVD XBOX360. Then the regular people who just want to play the games wouldn't have to go and buy a brand new HD-DVD Xbox360. Both groups would be buying the exact same disc, but they'd be getting content equal to what they're willing to pay for. This would put all of the pressure onto the developers to choose whether to segment the market or not.

As far as the Dev's go, they'd have to be extremely foolish to only support one or the other. AFAIK if you generate a high-res texture or a high-res video, it's quite easy to downsample to save space. It wouldn't really be costing the devs that much more to generate the high-res content (they already do that, AFAIK they generate as high as they possibly can, and have since the PSX. then they downsample to fit the media/power of target system) and then keep the highres for the HD-DVD's and then just downsample on the regular DVD.

So please, how is that alienating the fanbase? Also, how does blu-ray or java support have ANYTHING to do AT ALL with the current topic?

My biggest problem with CS nowadays is that all the average to pro skilled players just know where someone's head is going to come out at a certain door (and where their head will be when they subsequently duck) and they know their own reaction time, so they just aim at one of those spots and wait for you. Also it is a problem that people have been playing the maps since '99 and know everything about them, including where to shoot through walls that will generally result in damage to other players. I think both of those problems could be remedied by adding new content (maps, weapons, and general features.) I must say that the new radar system is quite interesting, and has actually gotten me to log off of PoE2 for Battlefield 2 long enough to check out.

With the news about the HD/DVD hybrid discs from yesterday, it might not be such a bad idea to do the internal HD-DVD drive. They could then leave it up to game devs to support HD, Non-HD, or both. Assuming that most game devs aren't handicapped, they'll probably opt for using that DVD/HD combo so that those of us with regular DVD drives, can play the same games as those with the HD-DVD drives (and maybe those of us with non-HD will also be allowed to read the text in their games too!)

My point is that my PC has quite a few years left in it before I have to switch to a brand new machine. I only have to switch to the brand new machine if I want to stay current in gaming. Barring a major failure of one of my devices, I'd suspect that over the next 4 years I might have to put another $400 in my machine. I won't even mention that I can sell off older parts to people who are doing the same thing as me, just one generation behind.
