You forgot one major difference: Google is doing this.

What does this have that SL or any other project from 1992 didn't? It has a company with billions in cash and an army of nerds with 10% of their free time to do whatever they want.

Even as a side project, this probably has more resources than the company doing SL.

Not only that, but there's evidence that suggests other codes were used in past attempts for the earth to create life. Those lifeforms that used the other codes have died off leaving only our type of life.

  7. Stress on base pairs on First DNA Molecule Constructed from Mostly Synthetic Components · · Score: 4, Informative
I don't think the summary stresses the base pairs enough. We have been able to synthesize DNA from the regular naturally occurring base pairs for a long time. This article is special because it talks about synthesizing DNA from unnatural base pairs, which several labs are working on, albeit with bacteria not chemical synthesis.

I also detect that some folks may not understand the implications. Right now the given combination of natural DNA base pairs can only code for the 20 base amino acids used in nature. If we could create a DNA system that can code for other types of amino acids (in addition to or instead of), we would be able to make some very interesting proteins that would do gods know what, but would make for some great possibilities.

  11. Not a fair normalization... on Only One Quarter of the Planet To Be Online By 2012 · · Score: 3, Interesting

The number of people online divided by the world's population is a not fair comparison. Think of all the infants and toddlers that aren't online because they are too young, or all the people who are too disabled to use the Internet. Even if you theoretically included the people who didn't have electricity or money to get onto the 'net in the calculation, it still doesn't make sense to include those who are otherwise not physically able to use a computer if they had one. I would like to see the percentage of people on the 'net relative to the number of people who CAN be on the yet, as in physically able.

Let's see.... be a scientist in industry. Start at 70k, and work your way up to Director making 140k in 5 to 10 years. After another 5 to 10 years, get to be VP of Research making somewhere between 150 and 300k, depending on the company. OR Go to work for government. Start at what? 30 to 40k? Work your way up to some upper level of government official doing research at what? 100k tops, maybe, if that? (And have it take about 20 years to get there?) You might get a pension from the government after that time and then get a real job making money while collecting your pension, but who wants to wait until they are 40 to start their life? Also, I've been wondering. How come all posts that call America nasty names, like terrorist, get modded up, but those that defend it in some way get modded down? Is /. really that far to the Left by and large?
