When those pimply infectious things pop up, do we try to go after them, or do we try to get the source - the infection? If you do the second, you are more likely to be disease-free sooner rather than later. Cancer, IMO is the same thing. Tumors are just the infected pimples popping up. Until we can find the source, controlling, not necesserily cutting out (as that does a lot of damage to the immune system), the tumors should be the biggest priority. Cutting out a tumor does not remove cancer.

  16. On a more serious note... on Building the World's Most Powerful Laser · · Score: 2, Insightful

Some of the people who are working on this have told me that eventually, if it works, it will be converted to a power plant. However, no funding exists for research for such use at this point. A few of the biggest tasks include cooling the environment around the laser (lasers tend to heat things up), as well as focusing the laser on the pea-sized target. From what they're saying, "we're at least twenty years away from having this working..."

The site is quite nice. I remember it being built when I worked at the Presidio Trust one summer. I went by a few weeks ago and it looks like they're ready to open it. It fits in quite well and looks much better than that old and ugly hospital building that once stood there. Hopefully they'll extend trolley buses into the park now that there'll be demand for them. Also, hopefully Lucas will provide some sort of a visitor center to attract people, considering the fact the Palace of Fine Arts, Exploratorium and the Golden Gate Bridge are a few steps away. BTW. Lucasfilm will get a much better view of the bridge once the new approaches get built in about 10-12 years.
