Games are a particularly young art form. The beginning of cinema was similar. There wasn't much meat to what they did. It was based in the amusement of seeing a moving picture.
It is the same with games. Only now are we starting to truly see games that seek to work as artistic and storytelling devices. Even now, much of them are weak and not strong in an artistic sense or in a sense of narrative. We have begun to see narrative gems like Xenosaga, FFVII, KOTOR, HL2 and others. Soon perhaps we'll see games develop a sense of aesthetic too(the way a sense of beauty is evoked. there are many different ones, they stem from a philosphy of creation) .
I personally believe that at some point games will become an artistic genre like unto cinema or even opera. With art-direction, carefully written plots, and quality music. Perhaps the way a game plays will eventually reinforce the message or story it puts forth. Won' that be interesting.
ummm it is ironic that someone has devised a method to repair a windows machine with its arch-enemies linux and apple. There is a poetic irony to that.
From Dictionary.com:
:
"1.incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs: "Hyde noted the irony of Ireland's copying the nation she most hated" (Richard Kain).
2.An occurrence, result, or circumstance notable for such incongruity."
It is true that the usage is loose however it is not innapropriate. Next time perhaps I will be more correct (or specific) in my usage.
I vote and think like my church tells me to?
You need to get a handle on the real world. I can and do think for myself. If you want to spew sensationalist garbage, go ahead but don't tell me how I think. Members of the church are PERFECTLY capable of and do think for themselves. I don't know if you know, but the church does not speak out on political matters. Lets keep prejudice out of this.
The bill is still in the comitee stage, where it will die, but it will never go through like it is described in the article. It is unconstitutional, but more than that is utterly ridicuolous. The state courts would turn the law over in seconds. Don't freak out. The first company to face that law in court would immediately find flaws in the statute. We always hear about horrible new bills and the damage they are going to do, but usually they are radically changed, to be more logical and sensible, or die before ever seeing a vote. btw there are too many economic considerations holding this back. kinda like tort reform. There is a lot of money on one side of the issue that will make enough noise to kill such a ridiculous proposal quickly.
I said responsibility was good. I didn't say rockstar was irresponsible and I pointed no fingers. I said that we often ask for rights while trying to ignore the responsibilities that should come witht them in this society. I stand by that point.
Well borg hunter. I think it was the methodology not the message I took issure with. His statement seemed to me to be coming from some sort of righteous indignation which I simply did not identify with or feel was justified. my sarcasm what merely an attempt at noting that. I did not mean to offend your sensibilities
Interesting that the story description compares suggesting that anyone other than parents and pastors having a moral responsibility to McCarthyism. People in this world are always demanding privelleges without responsibility.
-I want freedom of speech... but I don't want to be responsible for the effect my words and deeds have on others-.
lets be realistic with rights come responsibilities. If you want to reach a mass public audience, you could at least have the decency to consider the impact your ideas and products would have. Do you have some sort of incredible obligation to only make your games or art or whatever a certain way so as to satisfy some traditional moral standard? of course not.... But let's try consider the good of the world when we do things (not that video games necessarily should be designed to be good for the world). I don't think manhunt or BMXXX really did the world any good (more than that, they are frightening examples of what bad things human beings are capable of doing or making when they set there mind to it). They certainly have "the right" to make games like that, but wouldn't some moral considerations be nice? I get just as angry about the bible-toting, video-game-banning, harry-potter-is-of-the-devil-shouting mobs of people as anyone does. They turn questions of intent and desire into dogma. Into right and wrong. and that is stupid. however, People, lets at least realize what we do affects others and consider it when making art or music or games. You have the privellege of free speech, maybe you could balance that out with some healthy responsibility. Moral lessons? probably not, but.... RESPONSIBILITY.
p.s. please don't accuse me of thinking doom or quake caused school shootings etc. that is not what I am getting at. we could benefit from a further ingrained, accurate sense of right and wrong in our society.
I usually hate whining like I am about to do... but this is rather justified.
They are mostly concerned with PC RPGS here. Which is fine if MMOGs are your concern. but in terms regular rpg's the fact of the matter is that most of the meat of the subject is found on consoles. this polling totally ignored the RPG's (non mmog) that people were interested in. Fable was great and all.. I guess but it doesn't constitute the end all be all. and KOTOR II is also good but look at all the games they ignored here as though they were non-existant.
-Tales of Symphonia
-Star Ocean
-Shin Megamin Tensei Nocturne
-Shadow Hearts: Covenant (a flippin masterpiece imo
-Baten Kaitos
-Phantom Brave
That isn't even close to all the offerrings we saw last year. Gamerankings lists approx. 90 rpgs released this year and we are considering fable and Kotor II is all? Whether or not they (the few I listed) are universally loved doesn't matter, as some of the premier titles added to the genre this year they require consideration. How can they look only at console rpgs on the XBOX, the only console that is nearly completely lacking an RPG library. This is a pathertic poll. What a waste of a/. link.
It is interesting that this comes as any surprise because we have known forever that things of that nature improve hand-eye cooridination and reaction. Simulators are rarely even close to the real thing yet we use them. Not just because they train actions, but because they build up a pattern of reaction and expectation. In the same way, video games build motor-specific muscles and synapses that any reaction or hand-eye based activity can benefit from. True playing madden football isn't going to teach you to catch, but it could certain help you to improve your cooridination when using your fingers and thumbs. It is the same as suspecting that a talented pianist might be either quicker to learn, or quicker period, at typing.
I play a stringed instrument, but I was a gamer first, and my ability to play in tune and to use vibrato (place my fingers in the exact right place to produce desired pitches and vibrate my fingers back and forth to create a warm sound respectively) is much better than average and is sometimes better than the abilities of those who are overall much better players than I. I don't think it is a coincidence that I am a gamer and I was quicker to develop skill at precision movements like these.
Does this cd contain the FFVII overworld theme. THere are mp3's of an orchestral version of it floating around on the internet. But I want a legit copy of it and whatever else came with it...
Also being featured... are films that Cannes officials have been hailing with incredibly high praise... such as:
-The art of the sellout
-The check's in the mail
-How to bribe a Frech official
-Call it a "donation"
and
-Benjamin Frankin goes to pockettown
All these great films being brought to Cannes by EA now the official owner of all rights to games based on movie licenses... and Sprite reminds you to: Obey your thirst.
It is amazing how a company can build a following for something that seems so silly to a lot of people. I mean really for me at least (I no longer game, but I used to game a little bit, Rifts mostly and a bit of D&D) gaming was more of a social pastime than a competitive activity. However when I got involved my friends had already spent copious amounts of money on the games. These things have come to represent part of who people are today in this world. Any activity that connects people can provide someone with much needed identity. This must be how the warhammer people have made so much money. Find a market where you can get into someone's life and stay. Those are the best customers.
...is the fact that midway is doing the development. I mean Midway is not exactly a "home run" developer. Sounds like the're headed for a "leisure suit larry"/"BMXXX" quality game but with animated french-fries instead of boobies.
Piracy is not stoppable with legislation. They try over and over, but people just like free stuff too much for their silly ideas to work. It is time that a new system for rewarding the creative was invented. Our market economy's system of "buy it don't get for free" just ain't working.
on the other hand who can blame them for trying? If there is no gain to be gotten in making stuff due to piracy then why create movies, software and games etc? Piracy could literally kill art-forms if it grew into the rule rather than the exception.
If by pwned you mean, oh no there goes a lot of peoples' money, credit, and peace of mind. Identity theft is a big problem. I mean if you are dumb and bring it upon yourself by telling a social engineer your info in a chat room than well its still wrong and horrible but you should be able to avoid it by not being a retard. But when your information is stolen because a company you trusted can't provide the security that is a BIG Problem. Maybe it is time the Government tossed some heavy regulation out to require better e-security. It may be expensive, but I like my identity the way it is.
The point though, is that warcraft is not an old franchise in terms of the fact that It has recent titles that have come out in its name and has generated a lot of interest, but you don't hear much at all about Starcraft so it gets old. I was not speaking in terms of actual age.
Starcraft ghost has sorta lost the allure it once had. the Starcraft franchise is so old now, WOW just sort of covers it up. That and the fact that this is the first I have heard of the game in two years.
I mean if it were Starcraft 2 this would be quite exciting, but an FPS from blizzard....
We have one of these in my hometown, and it is really nice to get free wireless web wherever you go downtown. However the security is a nightmare. They do a horrible job of it where I live. I have a friend who now has memos and legal documents from several major businesses and I think even from city hall on his computer all because the security is virtually non-existant. The potential for:
a: wrong-doing
b: hilarious wrong-doing
is very high unless this is done right. Philadelphia could have some trouble on its hands if it doesn't go about this in a very careful manner.
Free-internet is good and all but maybe this is one of those situations where the bad could outweigh the good...

Your Tax Dollars at work.
Now you can get that piece of hardware that nobody wants and nobody owns for less money that still nobody wants to spend.

Thank you steve jobs for your magical machine of reconciliation. Do you think we could use IPODs to achieve peace in the mideast?
I know plenty of Mormon Democrats. I myself don't particularly love the Republican party. I am an independent though.
I don't get it....

Yeah morality is crap anyway. I mean who wants to teach people to do the right things and respect eachother. a world like that would suck /sarcasm
