Get yourself an old, totally unintelligent S412/506 MFM controller from out of an IBM PC or PC/XT. These were fairly dumb devices (g=c800:5 in debug, anyone?)
Refresh my memory - g-c800:5 was the command to low-level format the drive, wasn't it? Damn, my age is showing... lol
You should probably check your facts on the current "consoles". You will find out that the Wii has outsold the Xbox 360 and the PS3 by almost double. (Wii 54 mil., X360 32 mil., PS3 27 mil.)
And your insistence that MS will win the market buy just throwing enough $$$ at it? You have heard of the Zune, and Zune HD right? Granted, the do have a good share of the keyboard and mouse market...
All the more reason to practice what amounts to "civil disobedience"... Yet another biased judge that ignores previous precedents regarding fair use.
Big surprise huh?
Maybe if enough of us just do it anyway, eventually they can't sue all of us, eh?
Oh god, please, no...
When I got my new computer at work, I used Office 2007 for 3 months and finally had IT take it off and put 2003 on. That ribbon thing is awful.
... I believe most TV shows are on BitTorrent sites.:)
Reminds me of the obligatory Star Wars reference "The more you tighten your grip Tarkin, the more star systems will slip through your fingers..."
FWIW, I think you're doing a fine job Mr. Beckerman, and thanks for all your hard work on this subject.
And there really are a number of peeps here on/. who really need to appreciate you more and take the time to thank you.
Without you being involved, I'm sure things would have been much, much worse for our fellow netizens, and the RIAA would be out of control at this point.
ended up giving her a mac mini....
so if you want to configure Windows for a senior - my suggestion is to turn the PC into a hackintosh osx.
Just my $0.02
What's a real shame is that I already have an HD-DVD player, and as such, really feel no need to buy a Blu-Ray player anyway, UNLESS it is a 'combo' unit, IOW, able to play my HD-DVD discs too. I think then, and only then will I buy a Blu-Ray player... (and be about $99 like the toshiba I bought - not really interested in paying any more than that) I don't see how this 'rush' to embrace Blu-ray helps them sell more, because at this point, I simply have no urgency to buy yet another HD format than what I have.
I think Paul T. is showing his true colors as Bill Gates' personal 'lap dog'...
It's sad too, because I used to respect this guy... note: "Used to"
Lately he has tried to explain...(read: justify) WGA, and now the Apple/Jobs bashing... *I* think there's an awful lot of jealousy here, and worried that perhaps Apploe *does* make a better OS than Microsoft, and it's got them reduced to 'bashing'...
(BTW: FYI, I am not previously know as a Mac owner, only bought my first one in April, still have several Windows machines, so, I'm not a 'fan boy' so to speak)
I don't need to bother buying a new DVD player, since my current one has the same resolution as the new ones will, seeing as all I have, and will ever use, is component cables...
Sounds to me like these HD-DVD people are just screwing themselves out of all those potential sales...
Lets see... There are (according to most estimates) roughly 10 million people on p2p networks at any given time, and then there is the MPAA & RIAA & the bought and paid for government officials. hmmm, do you think the latter has ever heard of Gen. Custer? Do they *really* think they can stop p2p?
You bring up a good point, however I think there's a big difference between "copyright" and "Civil Rights"...
And whomever thought I was intending to 'flamebait' with my original comment should have taken your words to heart, and realized that I simply am pointing out the other side of the whole issue here.
All the more reason why all this anti-piracy witchhunt should be banished... Governments need to realize that they need to do as the majority wants, not what a select group of rich companies want...
My $0.02 worth.
"think somehow the technology exists to make them resist a few spills and kids whacking on them."
Ahem, one word: iPod?
As much as I like where Apple's heading, The iPod screens (especially the smaller one) have been a serious problem for them. Time will tell thought:)
So what happens when you spill coffee on it?
half joking, but half serious too... I have two small children, my guess it this wouldn't last 5 minutes in my house!
One more reason for me to continue using AMD chips in my PC's and Vonage as my provider. Intel and Skype can go on about their business like this and they'll wind up as amoral (sp?) as Microsoft. I guess some companies just don't get it: We want our computers to 'free us' from the mundane, not tied us down to it with bungy-cords.
It does seem like it'll be a hit in the toy market anyway! I always thought it was disappointing years ago when they came out, that they didn't transform themselves.
As I've hinted at before, I've tested Vista, and I believe it's the next 'Microsoft Bob'. So my predicition is they won't be selling many copies of Halo II for the PC...

I skipped tons of classes during my undergrad degree and this enabled me to actually assignments that I wouldn't have otherwise had time for.
Apparently, the time enabled wasn't for English/Grammer classes... ;) I suspect you meant ^-- "finish"
That's it folks, our armed forces are screwed!
We need a ribbon!
Oh god, please, no... When I got my new computer at work, I used Office 2007 for 3 months and finally had IT take it off and put 2003 on. That ribbon thing is awful.

because here's my response to them... "No"
I'm all about getting the hell out of here!
Even at Warp 9 it would take you about 4 years to get there :D
Leo Laporte!
I have to second this one... Leo is far more in touch with the common man than these other two clowns.

Like many others have said, sounds like FUD to me.

Nice touch ;D
