I think th Megaherz wars are long since over, since AMD started branding their processors with numbers-like GHZ (like the 2500+ or 2400, etc) or with actual "names" like XP, etc.

I am a programmer although actually I have stoped programming for quite some time (because I am making my PhD now) but, I think there is a really easy way of using GPL'd code in a closed source project, how?

    APIs.

Ok, imagine I want to use some GPL'd source code program with some other propietary code I have written, well, what I will do is create a "distribution" CD with my program, in which I will put the GPL'd code, and I will add some API's which will be de MODIFICATION to the GPL'd program, of course those APIs would be open, and I will also add my Closed Source (i.e. commercial) software, which, uses the API I created to call the other program.

If the FSF, GPL's guys get really pissing then instead of an API I would use a TCP socket communication protocol, or whatever is needed, of course I WILL have to donate/open the code for the communication mechanism, but, I will be able to have my closed source program intact because they are 2 different programs.

I do not know why any company has thought about it...

Just a comment about SciFi, I remember reading a book of Isaac Asimov where he explained the difference (at least in his point of view) about Science Fiction and the SciFi movie genre.

Science fiction used to be more rigid in the science terms and depending on the author, the technologies in the movies where based in actual "feasible" situations (that is, they had some scientific background).

When Hollywood adopted the genre and adapted it to the screen, they started filtering all those elements of "explaniation" (because it is not possible to tell a 300 page story in 2 hours of film) and some others totally ingored the Science element of the SciFi.

If you want programmers get Computer Software Engineers,

Computer Science grads is people that will develop the compilers/programs/technologies etc where you will program.

Computer Software Engineer is the one that sees all the Rel. DB, OOP, Software life cycles, Programming Languages, etc etc etc.

And, in the other side, the bad thing about US education is that it is REALLY narrow scoped.

You see... I made a Computer Development System Enginer, (a University BS equivalent degree in Mexico) and after that I am now in UK making a PhD in AI.

If I had studied something similar in US (an engineering programme) there is NO WAY I could apply to this CS heavy program in the UK.

But, in Mexico (and UK and other countries I guess) the Bachellors degree is not as short sighted and closed as in the US, so we are more "flexible".

So sad, that it may be close to the reality of providing Computer Programmer Technicians instead of Graduates.

I hope you understand the difference because in Mexico, we have 4 leveles:

    1. Technician. Which you can acquire entering a technichal High School.
    2. Licenciature (or however you can translate Licenciatura). Which is similar to the Bachellors Degree in the US, it is what you study in the University.
    3. Master. The 2 year plus thesis specialization you make after being graduate
    4. Doctor. The grade you acquire after you make your PhD research plus thesis.

So, as you can see, people Universities from the US are giving degrees with knowledge between 1 and 2.

Software piracy came to stay, as long as software continues to be Information it WILL be copied and as long as people do not create different ways to use software there will be people get a free copy to use it.

That is why companies are trying to get into web services, or as Google, Opera and other companies are looking for /different/ ways of getting revenues.
