I know,/.ers have given you a lot of reasons, but, for me, the best reason is that it will be a bit more easy to share something, as now it is really cumbersome to create share something on bittorrent network. I have some friend who wanted to share a video (his creation so it is legal) and asked me where could he do it, It was a chose between Emule Network (ed2k,Kad) and Bittorrent, of course, after I started telling him how to share on Bittorrent he decided to go to Emule (and just put his video in the Shared directory...
First the Bitkeeper Tridgell accusations, and now this comments with a flavor of "no, it can not be better"... I guess Mr. Trovalds is entering the age where the ideas and innovation are not emerging, sad for this but, I guess we will start to see these kind of comments and actions from the Linux founder...
Anyways... it seems (at least for me) that the Revolution is knid of/Vaporware/.
If you see this page at Kotaku it seems, from what Mr. Satoru Iwata said, that the next Nintendo console is still in the paper...
We have a number of candidates for a new interface but are not ready to reveal them. All I can say right now is that whatever we choose will be intuitive and easy to use for everyone [...]
We may or may not use the microphone in the new [Nintendo Revolution] interface.
So, what does this say??, for me, it seems they are going to be laaaaate at the Console fight next year so, their next console would better be good... (of course Nintendo has always been reluctant to expose their new consoles in the past, e.g. Project Unreality).
I would mod you up but I do not have mod points, but I will post here because parent post is a good example of what I will point out.
Parent message is an interesting message which have some reples which have +4 ~ +5 score, I have a 3 score filter and as I was reading those messages some of them made nonsense, so I had to go to parent and read it.
I think it could be useful (and fair) if there was an automatic karma bonus for comments like this that did not had mod points but indeed it is interesting OR insightful...
In that way, after a comment has some good replies (+4 or +5 ) it could get +1 mod as Underrated or something.
Ill just ask mods, please, do not mod me down at least think that my comment it is -1 OT and +1 Interesting... so it is even. =o)
just bought a "10.000 postcards" CD from CompUSA, and the Encyclopedia Britannica, only to discover they don't work on her you-bun-too laptop.
Software requirements apply to everyone. With Windows, our hypothetical old lady has to make sure that she buys for the right Windows version, and that it's not a Mac application.
I reply because I can not mod you up as I do not have mod points.
I agree in almost everything you said except the last quote, I think for the average people (or the old ladies in this case) this means something. If they can not use some kind of program they get, then they will only think their computer is not working and some intelligent friend will tell them that they need to install Windows to make her program work...
Unfortunately almost all of the comercial programs today are for the Windows markets, and people are used to not have to worry about different operating systems problems. I remember some time ago when my parents where going to get a computer and they decided for a PC because the Macitosh had almost no software...
I give that to Microsoft, becuase of their monopoly, we have been used to this confortable way to get software, so we do not care about different OS. Imagine if Windows, Linux, OS2 and OSX (for PC) where in the market with more or less the same market share?? It would be really bad if the average user went to the Office World and looked for a program but it was not in his OS.
HP does not open advertise the Ubuntu option, but instead lists FreeDOS as optional pre-installed OS. If requested, HP will provide a CD-ROM with a customized and Debian-based Ubuntu Linux free of charge. The CD also includes description of technical support, which includes free support through online resources as well as paid support through Canonical, the developer of Ubuntu.
I don't know, but I am quite skeptical about this, from what I read, people that chose the non Windows option would have to make the Ubuntu installation.
This mean one more step than with the Windows option...
There could be a difference, if the price of both configuraitons (windows, linux) where different. And even with that, the average user would end acquiring the Windows option because just hearing the "you must Install the OS to use the machine" will sound scary...
The question is WHY?? OH WHY!!? isnt Ubunty pre installed? what is wrong with that?

Let's examine what you have said... If MS Windows were not the dominant OS on desktop PCs, would it be as big of a target for virus writers?
First, if MS Windows was not the dominant OS on the desktop, it would mean Microsoft wont have a monopoly, so, they would have two choices:
1. Improve their OS quality (i.e. fixing the security holes. 2. Vanish from the market as there would be other OSes.
But thinking about the current OSes available, I could say it would be Linux and Windows (for PC). And also, Linux is FREE. So Microsoft could not compete in those terms (i.e. the only thing that makes Windows continue with its market share is the current popularity it has hence less companies making easy to use software in other OSes).
Mac had made it big and held 70% of the market (work with me, here). It stands to reason that there would be a whole lot more Mac exploits...
Wrong, because in that situation we would have some companies fighing more or less equally for the market share and they would have to make a BETTER product. But then again, Mac is another different platform (quite expensive AND inflexible for some of us) so I think they can not have more than say 30% of all the market share (I am talking about the Personal Computer market, Mac, IBM PC compatibles, ???).
So, in summary if MS was not the monopoly they are, their operating system would be really good. Why do you think the IIS just does not gets/there/?? because it is a more or less even market, so the BEST product is the one that wins (of course I am talking about product/service, etc).
No, certainly they will make the same thing they did with Windows, and start making names with sensless 2 letters combinations like:
XBox PE Xbox NE Xbox UP
wtf... I dont know, any combination is fine...

Well, it seems it the Xbox 360 is the Family All In One multimedia station MS promised it will be...
Unfrotunately, if every game is Live aware, I am affraid developers will tend to concentrate in the Live gameplay while leaving us the poor unfortunate guys that do not have high speed internet or WiFi (does it comes with an ethernet adaptor?) with 1/3 of the "experience"...
I certainly will wait until Nintendo and Playstation release their consoles to make a choice... (as I do not have the money to buy the 3 of them... or even 2)
I think the situation is quite similar. I have a friend who sells computers (small distributor), he gives you the option of buying Windows... normally a computer in Mexico is $7000 MXN ~ $635.237 USD. After that, the people see that Windows is like $1500 MXN more so they do not like it.
So, one of the guys that works for my firend offers you to install Windows Proffessional Plus Ultra for just $100 MXN or something... (pa los chescos) and he copies the i386 folder.
At the end, if this people can get their computer working with the MS Win Pro Plus Ultra, why will they want to have MS Win Standard??? and, this people do not care if the copy is legal or not, they just WANT to use their computer, for they software is just like mmm something that makes the computer work... it is like if you tried to "sell" those nice equalizers prsets or eq bars that your stereo has.
Yes, if, you actually make the calculations and substract the average number of people downloading once and spreading offline minus the number of people downloading a lot of times to install, reinstall, rereinstall, rerereinstall... well, you get the idea. Then, the exactly number of downloads count as:... 42.
Note... I was going to write 1 but... u know... no?
So.. one quote from the article
Without Microsoft it still would be a world of IBM and Oracle and that would be a lot more expensive world
Makes me wonder... how would be the world now if back then, this guy didnt wanted to charge money for his software??, what if Mommy Gates had not strong IBM relations so IBM had bought MS-DOs instead of licensed it??
sorry man, but you have just burned your karma... I am sure your comment will be modded down into oblivion... as will mine. Remember, this IS SlashDot and the penalty for defending Microsoft is a -2 Sucker mod...

And several others I do not know... they only need to have their own cereal!
If Microsoft concentrated in doing ONE thing (ok, two or three things) right, THEN he would not have all these problems.
Microsoft SHOULD specificaly work on Microsoft Windows AND Microsoft Office. Make them lot a hell better (For example, at least allowing to quickly change the pointer type when I am making a presentation, instead of showing the right-click menu); that way they will be seen better.
I am sorry to tell you but I have used this 7-zip application and the interface is really bad, compared to Winrar. so no, I think it is not better. Even WinAce is a really kicker!.
That sounds good, but what about using the technology that lets you project a clear image in a transparent surface (I do not remember the name, but some of the big electronics houses uses it) and use it to "project" the image to a sheet of plastic or something like that?
as for the keyboard, I remember sometime I saw a projected keyboard which was also projected to a surface, and you only had to tap the surface 'keys" to use it.
Of course you would need to have the surfaces to project the keyboard/screen, maybe for the airplane is not good enough... maybe an unfolding keyboard could be better, along with an unfolding screen.
Or direct brain wiring, that would be awesome lol.

Yes yes, I know, I've already read the How all started Stallman story some time ago.
I was talking specifically to the Personal Computers market, and what could happen if MS where not here now as they are.
Maybe the Macintosh would be the defacto standard as they had graphical interface, or IBM with his OS/2 would be the monopolistic beast MS is today.

Microsoft is tackling firms like Skype by integrating Voice-over-Internet telephony into its Messenger software.
Oh no, Microsoft please do not do anything to Skype... I use their service and is really fine (I use SkypeOut)...
I will be praying asking that Microsoft do not buy them... =o( please?
