I find it sadly amusing that copyright and similar concepts has gotten so far that there should be countries in which it is not possible to waive elements of it
I think it depends on the country. In the USA copyright is supposed to be a temporary "monopoly" grant to the person that came up with whatever "content".
However in Mexico for example, there are two types of "rights" when it comes to copyrightable content, first is the moral rights, which dictate that whatever you come up is your property forever and that such property cannot be transfered.
The second type of rights allow the author to temporarily transfer the right of "commercialization" to a third party. This can be for any amount of time but has a limit. After the time (specified in the contract) expires, the rights return directly to the creator.
I agree with the sentiment of the summary. IMHO the most influential *console* game of all time is without a doubt the original Super Mario Bros (i.e., the one that came with the Nintendo Entertainment System).
As an experiment to confirm this, anyone could go to their closer park and ask any passerby to try to recognize a song, first you could sing (or how is it call in English when you only do "ta ta ta taratata tata ta ra ta..." to the rythm?) the song of "Mario Circuit" and then the song of world 1-1 of SMB. Guess which song will be recognized more?
I've already thought a few times about modding the console to be able to backup the games before the kids manage to destroy the disks accidently.
What does your (in)ability to play personal legally backed up games have to do with industrial piracy?
What Nintendo is asking for is to stop the *for profit* piracy business. For example, specifically in Mexico (the scenario I know) where the sell of pirate Game/DVD/CD is rampant in public markets (say, Tepito or Pericoapa in Mexico DF, Mitra in Monterrey, etc).
OTOH what they are asking is completely unenforceable (at least in Mexico), because the few resources that government has are being used to fight other more important issues (e.g. drugs, for which the USA has the solution [i.e., decrease the demand you junks]).
Last but not least, Nintendo *has* the potential to reduce piracy in some of these countries (again, at least in Mexico) by setting game prices to a reasonable amount.
When they understand that selling a game for $40 in Mexico means taking about 10% of the MONTHLY* salary which a family uses to live, then they may see why is it that the majority of people can *not* afford their consoles.
Of course, I hear people saying "if they can not affording, just do not use it". But the problem is that these companies continue advertising their product to push it in a market outside their range.

Google News is trying to keep the flame alive but it's a lost cause.
Funny that you say that, just the other day I was looking at something on groups.google.com (aiming for Usenet) and could not find it due to all the spam (google groups, web forums, etc).
I then tried to look for an alternative web-Usenet interface without success (does anyone know of one?) but found the following page:
The Usenet Improvement Project is an attempt to make Usenet participation a better experience for those who are clued as to what the Usenet medium is and how to use it.
Most of the people who post to Usenet via the clunky Google Groups web interface are lusers or lamers.
Unfortunately I do not have access to nntp via my ISP.
If you want Windows, you buy the Windows version. Installing an OS on a desktop tends to be a hassle, doing it on a standard notebook has many more pitfalls, and doing it on a netbook is even more difficult to get right. It's pretty silly that these people are blaming Asus when essentially they just bought the wrong model.
Just yesterday I was looking at the Dell Mini 12'' (which I think is the best netbook offerin due to the screen size) in dell.co.uk
I do not why but they just offer the 1.3 ghz Atom if you choose the Linux version, whereas they offer the 1.6 version if you get the Widows version... That may be a good reason to buy the Windows one.
Unfortunately (according to some comments I read) it is not possible to increase the memory of the Dell to more than the 1GB they provide.
Considering that a $200 million "film" can be obtained in DVD for USD$20 at most, I am sure that there is no way a Wii game should cost more than that... (currently 50 euro!)
I was kind of lamenting that there wasn't something I could host on my beefy Linux desktop back home that acts as a code repository and compilation machine while all my development is done through a netbook.
Lament no more!
I present you, the remote desktop client. There are even free (as in libre and as in gratis) versions for your favourite ouperating system flavour
I agree. I was surprised to see the Facebook issue in the CNN international channel (unfortunately one of the only 2 English speaking channels here in Germany).
The fact that it got the attention from the mainstream press surprised me. I hoped things could go further to a class action lawsuit to test the "validity" of EULAs in general.
Although IANAL I believe that unfortunately it will take one of these big companies to make a precedent of how crazy and unenforceable are some of these license agreements.
theres always at least one asshole who has to chime in with "thar r ads? lolz i ues adblock"
Mmmm, being this slashdot I am more inclined to say "theres [sic] always at least one asshole who has to chime in with "oh noes! They are loaded with advertisements."
I'm a mathematician. Many Slashdotters are programmers, engineers, etc. Isn't our work creative? How come we don;t get a lifetime +90 years gravy train?
Write a book and enjoy the 90+ years of revenue... until TeamLiB warezez your book.
Well... I am no English expert, in fact it is my 2nd language (Âprimero Español amigo!) but I found the sentence:
"This would only go into affect after enough..."
Very strange... is it that confusing "effect" vs "affect" for native English speakers? for me they mean completely different things "afectar" vs "efecto"
You might think (as well as I do) that the UAC screens are really annoying.
But just last December a friend (computer illiterate) asked to help him installing a camera on his computer running Vista. While helping him I said something bad about the moronic UAC "cancel or allow" messages and my friend told me the following:
"Although you may find the warnings cumbersome, they are good for me because it warns me if I am sure to do something. Sometimes I press somewhere without knowing and if not because of the warnings I may run programs I do not want"
His logic made me think twice about UAC... of course, people that do not need it (i.e., those of use who know what we are doing) can simply deactivate it, however it may be useful for people who do not know what they are doing.
On the other hand, I still believe that the actual messages that appear could be more explanatory... however, there comes another problem, and it is that most of the people do not care to actually READ what the system is telling them and they just see an alert message with a warning sign.
But that comes from the times of MSDOS... I remember when I was a kid and started programming computers that my father told me it would be a good Idea to make a program that would read the instructions of the programs to the users (his university students) because even when the instructions were there in the screen, they would not care to read them... people are lazy.
It often produces much smaller compressed files (typically about half the size of a PDF), and there are open source viewers for many platforms. Refer to original article
It has plenty of support for annotations, OCR, internal links etc just like PDF Refer to your own comment.
you can extract the parts and structure of a Djvu document in XML with command line tools and modify them easily. Refer to this page It's also very easy to cut a Djvu document into individual pages, which lets you publish big documents on websites so that use
Last but not least, the Djview viewer renders pages much faster than Acrobat or Xpdf in my experience - Refer to Foxit PDF for windows or linux (look for the link in a previous post of mine.
Oh, one advantage of PDF is that everyone else is currently using it, therefore you won't annoy people by making them download and install new programs to do something (read) that they can do with the software they have... only because you want to use an obscure format type.
p.s. All my word processing needs are filled with.PW files. Wha'da'ya' think?

OTOH, I could have started my own ring!

Remember WBS??

You missed 95Plus and 98SE
Compared to IE, I'd rather use a DILLO for most things.
There, fixed it for you
Another Firefox Version, and more bloat is added to this "clean and lean" version of the Mozilla browser...
Meanwhile, I see each version of Internet Explorer really better than the other.

My thought was, isn't it trivial to write an AdBlock filter that will just block all the unwanted content from AdImpact servers?
Sadly we're not popular enough for anyone to have made a keygen that I can find.
Just give me a link to your software and I will fix that for you :)
And 1.3 kg vs. 1.45 kg is about 2-3 Mars bars, depending on which Mars bar we are talking about. [wikipedia.org]
How much would that be in Library of Congress? or is it an incompatible unit?
