Actually it was four door, had power everything including sunroof, and cruise control. No it didnt have airbags, but those don't add that much weight difference. The primary difference I can see is the displacement and weight. The new Civics have 1.7 liter engines and 15 inch alloy wheels, plus all kinds of body kitting and what not. While mine had a 1.5 and 13" wheels. I agree weight is a large part of why new civics get worse gas mileage, but their considerably more horse power is also a factor, so my original post was advocating lowering weights of cars and lowering their displacements. If we all drive slow light cars the accidents wouldn't be as bad in the first place.
If you removed the batteries + electric motor from a Prius, you'd save a lot of weight, and I'd bet you'd probably get almost the same gas mileage as you did before, just using the 1.2 (or whatever it is) liter gas engine.
This is what i've been telling people who want the Civic Hybrid....the Civic Hybrid has 93hp, costs $20k, and gets 40mpg. My 1991 Civic had 92hp, and got 40mpg, and you can get one now for $1500 or less. All car makers have to do to get better gas mileage is build lighter cars with small engines. Why does the average car in the USA these days have 200hp? Do we really need that much?
All the more reason to become less reliant on middle eastern oil!
Though i'm not sure how easy it would be to switch to petro-euro, because although the euro is attractive now, the EU is used to running at trade surpluses, but if the euro stays so high they will begin to have trade deficits, which would cause a larger european economic problem. Also the dollar is still the worlds reserve currency. Although your conspiracy theory in that link is interesting, I think you overestimate the oil-lobby vs all the other lobbies in America. Plus China is the fastest growing user of oil, and the US is declining in its oil usage, so it all comes back to my original comment that if china doesn't float their currency they would be even more hurt by a switch to petro-euro then we would, which i doubt OPEC would allow.
People that are anti-bush administration like to say its a negative thing that he is "letting" it fall, but really his economic team has been purposely talking down the dollar for years, its a sneaky way of fighting outsourcing of jobs and the trade deficit, because asian currencies are pegged to the dollar, and they are so heavily invested in it, that they either need to float their currencies (to curb inflation) or invest in more dollars to keep the dollar value high. Its a win-win for America and and a lose-lose for the developing world which is overly dependant on the dollar, and the low exchange rate.
If we use our survelance and determine Iraq has WMD's, but then they don't its our fault. Suppose we had sent all kinds of crazy warnings to the people of India and Sri Lanka, and then there was no Tsunami...we would endless hear about how much tourism money the USA had lost for those governments, and how we cry wolf, and it was probably just to distract people away from Iraq.
It's a lose-lose situation for us, because no matter what we do, someone will find fault in it, which is why many people like myself are beginning to think we should withdraw from being so active all over the world and let people sort their own shit out.
I think you're just assuming the US isn't covering this much, as another poster said, i have seen almost nothing else on the news, and it is the top story of every newscast. Yes, people who are not directly effected will not "care" as much as those who are, for instance do you think the Ukraine is preempting all their election news with Tsunami coverage? It's doubtful, so while the US is covering the Tsunami coverage EXTENSIVELY, the news channels are also covering Iraq as many people are worried about what is happening to their children.
What I can't understand is why would someone go so far away from their homes just to reproduce their home environment?
Duh, because they bought their Super Big SUV so they could be rugged and manly, but when they pulled into the gravel parking lot where their pre-cleared tent area and grill were located they realized they couldn't surf the internet or buy a rasberry mocha latte. This solves at least one of their problems.
I prefer consoles mainly because I'm sick of upgrading my video card every 6 months. Even if the games for Xbox/Whatever don't look as good as most PC games, I'd rather know that i can buy the latest game instead of being disappointed by lacking the specs once again. I used to be a big pc gamer, now i use the PC for work and the console for play.
Actually someone has made chewing gum a crime, its called Singapore. So in that sense I agree with you that anything can be a crime...Chewing gum is a real crime in Singapore. They want their streets to be clean, so whether you think its a real crime or not does not matter because what your doing is violating the law. Lobby to change the law if you want to, but I don't see why people should be able to take for free a product that I spent my time and money to create and want to sell. From what your saying Shoplifting would not be a "real crime" because its just a poor college student taking something from a big corporation...where do you draw the line for a "real crime" exactly?
You have the attitude of the security folks here at work, while blocking all ports at the firewall and allowing no one internet access, and giving all users limited read-only rights to their computers would create a secure environment, it makes productivity almost nothing. No matter what the OS, you must trade some security for productivity and usefulness.
I agree with most people's comments here....yes what he was doing was illegal and we shouldn't feel sorry for him, but also yes he shouldn't serve 15 years or be sued for millions of dollars. But what good I do think comes from this is it shows others that its a "real" crime. I know in the past i have shared software or knew others who had, and we all figured "eh this is too small potatoes for anyone to care about", because at the time no one was being prosecuted. But it was still a REAL crime. I'm certain this bust made at least one or two people rethink sharing files on their network. And I think thats the point of these high profile things is to make the reality of the crimes apparent to kids. How many people here stopped sharing files on Kazaa when the RIAA started suing people? I know i sure as hell did.
haha, i dont think you quite understood my first post, but you have a similar attitude to the first person. I was not bashing unix first of all. I agree its a decent operating system, and it has its uses. However, there are alot of people on slashdot, like the original poster, and it sounds like you are as well that have the attitude of "if its not unix/linux related/based its not cool and not worth my time". With that kind of attitude we would still be using vacumme tubes and the horse and carriage. While I agree that "just because something is new its not necessarily cool", by the same token "just because its been around for 30 years" doesnt mean it is and forever will be the best. And yes, why should you pay for something when you get it for free? Well companies like RedHat have shown that people are willing to pay a little more for something they can get for free if it offers more features or is packaged nicely. At this point obviously SkyOS is inferior to Linux, Windows and MacOS, but one should not shoot down new original ideas simply because they are new and different. Every good idea has to start from humble beginnings, so I am not trying to be a Unix sucks troll, in fact I run linux (in addition to Windows), all i'm saying and continue to say is that it is possible to come up with a better idea for an operating system then unix/windows/macos.
I think maybe just alot of international users use the US google portal...Google News's Sports section NEVER leads off with news from the NFL or college basketball (even during march madness), but it almost always had something about Real Madrid or some other European club soccer or cricket team.
I think they cooked up alot of their numbers, for example none of the top news stories in november/october were about the election, but instead about carlo whoever (i didnt even know his name til now) that refused orders in iraq....if i remember google news at the time it was ALL about the election and hardly anything about carlo whats-his-face.
Not saying that just because something is written from scratch its exciting, just saying an entirely unique OS that runs common applications is more exciting then yet ANOTHER variation of linux that now runs on my wrist watch or whatever. I was just refering to the original persons comment that because its NOT unix its not exciting.
Personally I think things like SkyOS are MORE exciting then *nix based systems. Just because linux etc are open source doesn't make it the best. Its still basically based on a 30 year old operating system. I really like the idea of a system written from scratch, and although it would be nice if it were open source, i don't see anything wrong with another commercial competitor. Just the fact that he was able to port Firefox "easily" makes it seem that he has put some thought into making an OS that will support common applications.
Agreed, Google may have been neat and independent at one time, but I see it now as using the same evil tactics microsoft used....they are branching into all kinds of other sectors (such as desktop search, cell phones, etc) just to place more advertising. We hate all kinds of other advertisers here, why not google too? 98% of their income is from ads. And certainly no one can claim the founders are not about the money, they are about to cash out another $300 million in stock in the next quarter, not only enriching themselves, but diluting and lowering the value of the stock their users own while still maintaining a grip on all of their prefered voting stock.
I agree with alot of the above comments, if this guy said something like "We use oracle and apache for our web servers, because its more secure and has better performance", you guys would be going nuts...."LOOK EVEN MS DOESNT USE THEIR STUFF!!!!". Its the same reason the parking lot at GM looks like a Chevy/Cadillac dealership.
It's about time someone came out with a media player and a music store to support it. Its brilliant original ideas like this that keep AOL rolling in new subscribers.
Last time i checked PA the abrieviation for Pennsylvania has been around alot longer then PA the acronym for Penny Arcade. But Pennsylvania has always suffered from people biting off it. First came "Public announcement" (the "PA" system), then Physician Assistants, Public Attorney, Public Accountant, etc
This all stems from the philosophy that we should praise all kids for their work regardless of how good it is. If we shamed the kids that fail, the perceptions would change. Lets not worry about propping up the self esteem of stupid kids.
Its not as much apathy as consumer electronics have gotten so cheap in present day that it has become a mind set that its much easier to just buy a new blender or tv or computer without trying to get it fixed. Which for alot of things is true, when my tv broke i was quoted $150 to get it fixed, when a new one would only be $200. People that dont know much about computers assume its the same kind of thing, and also the rationalization of getting something new, plus easy credit makes these people think its just easier. I dont know how many people i know that have 2.5Ghz Pentium 4's that complain their computer is "old and slow" just cuz they've never defragged it or resisted downloading a free screensaver.

Diesel = Great for gas mileage
Diesel = Terrible for the environment

I think its a combination of not wanting to see antennas and yuppies with laptops while trying to enjoy the great outdoors.
