    i have seen numerous designs the best is a DVD with plastic surface that withing 24 hours Oxygen causes it to decompose

    Well considering Athlon X2 is bleeding edge , and you probably have an older distro with an older kernel which doesnt have support for you System (causing it to emulate things such as IDE Sata which makes any computer extremely slow.

    Also in many cases a new kernel or even a recompile may be needed to enable the full potential of dual cores.

    I had the same problem with Windows XP It did support my SIS180 Sata controller so my maxtor 16m cache hdd was transfering slower than a cd could.

    Konqueror isn't a dedicated web browser so it's expected to be slower at web pages.

    I found KDE 3.4.1 extremely fast on my Athlon XP 1.4gz (1700+) with 512m ram , however my duron 1.0ghz with 512m ram crawls along.

    but that should be expected duron has a much smaller cache.

    You can't really call CD dead.
    it should be supported for another 5-10 years

    until music CD's disappear from the picture give or take 5 years before DVD bluray etc drives dont bother adding cd read capability.

    as far as i'm concerned DVD will die long before CD will.

    have you not seen Samba Lately? The protocol of sharing files on Windows Networks, it changes a lot between windows versions and has poor documentation for linux developers to make Samba

    actually since day one MS has made massive losses on the console hardware. They were more expensive to make than Playstation 2 Yet they had to undercut Sony on price to make it in the door. Their only profits are from game and LIVE royalties.

    have you tried the muliplier of 6 on that k6-3?


    some k6-2+ and k6-3

    let you set the muliplier to 2x and

    it assumes it is 6x

    very handy i once had a k6-2 at 6x83 on a p1 board maxed out :)

    you clearly never had a pre 586 cpu
    i dont think he is not talking anything about the memory controller

    IO Hardware control was the reposibily of extra hardware

    network cards handled all io traffic

    sound cards were very complex and the cpu did

    absolutely nothing to help

    A prime example is the Wintel modem

    Linux doesnt support them well as drivers/software pass all the work to the processor

    more expensive modems dont use the cpu at all extenal modems generally.

    Example my tv tuner PCI used to work flawless on my old pentium 100

    however with my current much newer 1ghz machine it has a cpu usage and slows (drops heaps frames) when i'm loading programs.

    now everything has been offloaded for the cpu to do

    mainly at the time it was because they were fast enough and the io components add extra cost.

    You still buy IO cards but are they compatible with new boards?

    I'm on board i Posted a letter to the ATO last year with the same grevance.

    ATO should post out a linux live cd with tax software on it.
    it would prevent any chance of uneducated people giving all their personal details to a keylogger in their crappy windows honey pot :)

    Pirates have moved from the seas to our citys next step in the Air :)

    shuttles by the year 3000 will be prey for astropirates

    you shouldnt need tools though

    I use KDE and everything konquoror saves is stored
    /home/me/.konqueror
    Amarok saves
    /home/me/.amarok
    AMSN saves
    /home/me/.amsn/

    it has access restricted to Root/Admin and me
    you can't access it and i can't access
    /home/you/

    all hardware settings and data is stored /etc/
    it is not accesible by any one bah Root/admin


    Many programs (non MS adopt a similar concept in
    c:/Document/me/Localsettings/Applicationdata ?
    Linux doesnt have the ultimate solution but it is more
    a. user friendly
    b. safer no hardware data contained to be damaged
    c. has a longer life span (performance degrades slower)
    d. It is completely mobile. i can store it on an independant hdd, portible drive/flash. i can even copy my complete /home/me/ directory to another completely different computer and all my personal setting remain in tact
    (the windows registry can not be moved between machines due to hardware related settings.) where as MS software likes filling the registry. to max capacity

    I used Mac a couple times at TAFE because i was
    annoyed at how unsteady the windows network
    setup was.


    MAC OS/X has evoled very rapidly and various tools
    are extremely nice, however i didnt get to use the Widget due to system policy, i was so
    in love with mac OSX but couldnt afford a mac
    so install Linux

    With KDE and GNOME both of which support widgets.
    I have Weather Widget and the clock is a widget :P
    A widget displaying the temperature status of my hardware.
    i do wish i had lots more widgets,
    in particular
    one that displayed whats currently on the 3 TV
    local channels (whats on TV NOW! do i wanna
    watch?)
    Widget are an innovation that windows doesnt offer.
    Windows has not changed since 95, same start menu
    (it did evolve in XP but isnt very original)
    The worst thing a person can learn is can't
    windows has shoved it down our throat for years
    can't do this can't do that

    anything is possible and if it possible people will use it.
    I'm guilty of it
    windows 3.1 came out i received a copy and i thought what the hell is the
    point i can do every thing i need in DOS
    but i ended up using 3.1 due to the convenience.
    there have been daYs where things were so
    unthinkable that many believed why bother making that noone will ever use it
    Bill Gates himself said noone will ever ever ever use email, or internet for business.
    hense why Windows 95 was internet friendly
    Win98 was fully internet orentated.

    Opera masquerading as IE doesnt get everything done that IE can
    what about IE only applets, extensions, media content?
    they don't all work and if opera showed it presence that would change
    just like it did for firefox

    many online tools , security, antivirus, games email websites have shifted from IE only scripting, language or Activex along with specific reliance on Windows
    instead opting to extend their support for non WintelIE products thanks to influence from Mozilla-Firefox and the mobile browsers (phones) users.

    Software Patents dont protect the software industry as a whole, it mearly protects the companies with the most money. aka the company with the capacity to buy the most patents. When did Most of these software companies grow exponentially? well during the biggest peaks in the IT industry there was absolutely no thought of Software patents the software industry as a whole didnt need patents to help them grow. The most powerful and influencial software companies are pushing for this to create a world, which will be disaster. This mistake happened once before in physical technology. The Car (automobile) one car company owned the patent on the tyre, another the wheel, another the steering wheel. If this stupid practice wasn't settled and dismissed the car would never be produced till all patents had expired. That debarcle would have wasted 25 years of human revolution, if the car makers hadn't agreed to a patent sharing agreement and started building cars. Open Source isnt dead though Redhat, Novell, IBM and Sun have vowed to defend and retaliant to threats of software patent litegation against Open Source interests. Probably can add apple to that list due to reliance on Opensource projects as integral parts of Mac OSx.

    i didnt think paypal made any money from fees I figured they made money on the interest of average $20 x 20 million users $400 million dollars equates to a lot of interest that is why i don't use standard banks or paypal to store my money they make money out of my money and either charge me fees or offer me free storage. HSBC :) and ING may make millions from my money but at least i get some interest from it.

    I wouldnt mind it Hypersensitive doesnt mean it will violently, uncontrolably rock back and forward, Currently an Optical mouse is a hypersensitive device compare it to a Mechanical mouse (aka ball mouse) A current scroll is mechanical also in many cases the exact same wheel with cogs over infra red picks up movement, sometimes you scroll one line sometimes 2 lines at a time. and you have no way to scroll less any other factor than 1. aka no scrolling 1 and a half lines. a good optical mouse can just about be moved by pixels. i remember my last ball mouse in 2000 which sometimes moved an inch other times moved much more making it unresponsive and unreliable.

    google image from homepage late 1999 http://www.google.com/images/Title_HomPg.gif check out the first google image 1998 http://www.google.com/google.jpg i guess they forgot to delete them too noone here can blame google for covering themselves saying info may remain on their servers for a long time. I bet the main people complaining arent aware that when you delete a file on your computer it doesnt actually get deleted it remains physically on the hdd till it is over written, Google uses hdd too and delete stuff as do we.

    what's this talk only about redhat what's wrong with SUSE? Powered by novell they apparently have reasonable pricing structure, and most windows systems i've seen use patch up windows flaws by paying for Novell network products anyways.

    I'm a little worried some psychologists regard red as the colour of passion and rage. Blue as a colour is smooth and calming. Have you seen how mad some people get at a blue screen? smashed keyboards, mice , cursing. what would happen under the influence of red? i for one will be very hestitant on using a lornhorn powered windows machine in the same room as any other machine.

Computer store have no reaon to find it important to stop spyware fullstop, just provide a reason level of protection aka adaware. 2. Open source software is a avenure that may be worth pursueing. How much does MS Windows, Office etc add to the cost of a computer you sell? $150? that margin can be used to undercut competitors prices, *ad* Blazing fast Pentium 3.06ghz with Hyperthreading technology 512megs of ram 5.1 channel sound 15" LCD flat panel monitor comes ready to use with Windows XP home and Office software to get your work done fast. also including mouse and keyboard all for $50 cheaper than your competitor due to substitution of MS Office for OpenOffice.
