Authoritarian?? Social conservatives are the opposite of authoritarian, as their highest goal is to return the control of social issues back to the peoples' representatives (where the Constitution put it in the first place), instead of the Supreme Court.

Which is why they tried to use the Constitution to define marriage. It all makes perfect sense.

  4. Multiple Sclerosis? on AIDS Can Fight AIDS · · Score: 1

This is a very interesting idea, and it sounds promising. I would sound one note of caution, though: AIDS is not the only auto-immune disorder, and mucking with the immune system to make it hyperactive (especially if this is done as a vaccine) runs the risk of bringing on other immune disorders, like Multiple Sclerosis. MS is still very poorly understood, and nobody really knows what sorts of factors can bring it on.

I know that they have been testing this for three years without observed side effects, but MS is something that can be with you for 5 or 10 years before you know, or even suspect, that you have it.

Still, good work, and here's hoping that this can help a lot of people.

Maybe if environmentalists would stop playing for complete control over our lives and learn how to compromise, some rational discussion could ensue about how science applies to policy.

Nice strawman there. How long did it take you to build him?

If you were genuinely interested in "rational discussion", you would ditch the cartoonish stereotypes and notice the rather obvious fact that "environmentalists" is a pretty big umbrella that covers a wide variety of people.

Sure, the ones you describe do exist. I've dealt with them too, and I find them just as annoying as you do. There are also a lot of people who call themselves "environmentalists" -- in fact, I would even go so far as to suggest that we are the majority of environmentalists -- who want to see technology and society progress rather than tearing everything down to a hunter-gatherer society; who believe that intelligent use of technology is the solution rather than the problem.

So put your money where your mouth is and cut the bullshit.

My biggest complaint about mobile providers is the business model that requires your phone to be purchased from, and programmed by, the service provider. Imagine if you could only buy your computer from your ISP, and they only had a handful of models available.

The device should be purchased separately from the service, and then programmed by whichever service provider you choose. Of course, they will never do this willingly, because:

    1. People would no longer have to buy a new phone every time they switched providers, and
    2. It wouldn't be long before someone built a combination WiFi-VoIP/Cellular handset, and cellular providers would see their profits drop as users took advantage of the proliferation of open hotspots.
