  1. AOL support for this is huge. on Sender-ID Back From The Dead · · Score: 4, Insightful

With AOL using this standard, Microsoft gets a huge chunk of marketshare for it.

Microsoft has one goal in all of this: To lock Open Source out of a standard, and then launch FUD campaigns about how Open Source refuses to support Sender-ID (because MS will charge an insane fee for licenses, but MS won't mention this) and thus helps spammers.

  2. Re:$112 Or bust. on How Cheap Can A PC Be? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Close, but this system will also need a hard drive and CD drive.

Quick glancing at Pricewatch, You can probably get a 20GB hard drive for under $30 and a really generic CD-ROM Drive for under $20.

On the upside, we could probably get away with 256 MB of RAM. That will work for most people just browsing the web, sending email, or using a text document once in a while. So we're still probably looking at something around the $150 mark.

Now, this takes care of the hardware. What about the wonderful (*cough*) Microsoft software?

    Windows XP Home: $199
Microsoft Word 2003: $199 ($499 if you want full office suite)

Nearly $400 for software on an PC that costs around $150! This is, unless MS really is going to start offering crippleware versions of Windows and Word in the US market.

So what if mainstream Drow civilization is a blood thirsty horde commanded by a cruel matriarchy, and takes orders from an evil spider demon queen from the abyss? I don't think it is a big deal that most Drow only want to kill or enslave all the surface dwellers.

Refusing service to my character because I am a Drow is unfair discrimination and I don't see why my DM doesn't apologize to me.

So Badnarik and Cobb aren't doing this just for themselves. They were hoping to garner attention for their parties as well, and to illustrate that it takes their being arrested to get any sort of headlines.

#2. The problem with the PC game market is that it can be a pain just to get a game to run.

Most people just want to play games. They don't want to check system requirements or deal with PC issues such as upgrading drivers, making sure their OSes haven't been turned to swiss cheese by spyware, etc.

Furthermore, not everyone is willing to upgrade their PCs to play the latest games well. The price of a top of the line graphics card is the same or more as the price of a game console. That card will be outdated within a year, whereas the console's life will be at least 4 years.
