    Didn't think so.

  3. New slashdot poll: who to protect? on Texas Bill to Filter Highway Rest Stop Internet · · Score: 1

    This bill protects truckers at highway rest stops and campers in their RVs at campsites from adult content.

    Who would you want to protect from adult content?
    * Children
    * Video game players
    * Campers (not the video game type)
    * Yourself
    * Truckers

    Yeah, that's right. I'd vote to save the truckers from adult content. Truckers are just so vulnerable and are easily influenced.

    Then again, the article itself doesn't even have the word "protect" in it. As for blocking obscene material, I don't see any actual problem with that. Just because the state decides to provide a public service, doesn't mean they have to give you an open pipe. Is it considered socially acceptable to download porn at a public library? At work? At school? Probably not.

    Consider the following...

    A single pack of large fries contains 17.5g of fat. If we assume a store will sell 100 packs of large fries, that is 1750g, or 3.85 lbs of fat.

    In 1 week, the store puts out 27 lbs of fat.
    In 1 year, the store puts out 1404 lbs of fat.

    There are over 12,000 mcdonads in the US

    Assuming each store sells an average 100 packs of large fries, 12,000 mcdonalds stores put out 16,848,000 lbs of fat.

    Assuming the same number of sales in big macs (21.5g). That translates to 20,660,640 lbs of fat in 1 year.

    I can have a decent sized sandwich with cheese at about the 10g range. Replacing a burger/fry lunch with that would be only 9,609,600 lbs of fat, or a savings of 27,899,040 lbs of fat from being eaten.

    Its almost sickening thinking about it.

    As a consumer, I can choose to ignore the ads. I can also choose to tell the company that I see the ads as a negative point towards their product. Its not like i'm standing up and disrupting the movie or anything. I'm writing an e-mail after the fact.

    There seemed to be theatres in existence before advertising came into place, and funny enough, I didn't see a ticket price drop when they started doing it. They must've been making at least some money without advertising. Besides, they make most of their money on overpriced concession prices. You can buy kool-aid for only dollars a glass!

    I do this. Usually i get a generic response. Occasionaly I get a message saying that it will be passed onto their marketing department (which probably means a shredder), but if a marketing dept thinks that a method is having a negative effect on their business, they will consider using a more effective medium.

    I am considering getting a new car, possibly a Toyota, but I have seen too many ads from them in theatre. I am probably going to write to their central office and ask if they can give me any good reason that I shouldn't dismiss their company as a purchase option on that basis. Maybe i'll get an incentive or bonus feature or something in compensation.

  18. Re:Why does this not seem right? Everywhere... on TiVo Starts Testing "Pop-up" Ads · · Score: 3, Insightful

    Boycotting the theatre is the wrong idea. You boycott the products being advertised. Anytime I see a product in theatre, I write an e-mail to that company (c.c.ed to the theatre's company) and state that I will no longer (or will decide against) purchasing their product because I find it offensive to pay $____ for a movie and have to watch their ads.

    Occasionally, I wouldn't see the ad at the next show (but it was probably coincidence).

    There haven't been that many good movies out lately anyway.

    I took my CIS (computer information systems) diploma at a University-College. It included 2 'Math for CIS' courses, which included set theory and logic, a course on digital logic and hardware course (basically logic gates and theory), and 2 english courses.

    The program added 2 years to its name to make it the BCIS. Unfortunately, they've decided to split into a seperate university and college components, which I think will cause severe damage to the CoSc dept because almost all of the courses are taken by both 'College' and 'University' students.

    The only difference between the BCIS and a BSc is a few different math courses for BSc, a few business courses for BCIS, different english requirements (academic english vs business english), and a few upper level theory courses. That's it.

    As far as i'm concerned, i can program circles around all of the BSc students, and the majority of them have had no english courses to practice presentation or communication skills. A lot of programming is talking to the customer to figure out exactly what you need to build.

    In a way, i have the best of both worlds because I also have an electronics diploma which covered some of the missing math courses.

    I think the definitions for University and College are different in Canada vs the US.

    You must use plenum when wiring through air ducts/passageways in home/offices. The reason is that the regular plastic casing becomes toxic (as do many things when burned), so you want to limit that toxicity to a single room instead of across your entire building transmitted through air ducts. You can use regular cat for wiring that does not involve bridging floors or that goes through ventilation areas.

    From the FAQ:
    Plenum: Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning (HVAC) air return area -- mostly drop ceilings. Also below raised floors (where the underfloor area is used for ventilation).
