  1. Only 200GB? on 200gb Hack for iPod Nano · · Score: 3, Insightful

Why stop at 200GB? You could use a 500GB drive and have 150% additional capacity with zero gain in size. I'm a little disappointed that the nano cases won't quite fit anymore though. As the article states though, this is one mod any nano owner cannot do without.

That's probably the collective HD-DVD camp's line of thinking. Then when the standard gain's mass-movement, region lock-in gets slipped back into the standard because of newly founded "concerns" from the content producers. All the pros (of course, aside from the very real cost-, and very arguable format structure- benefit)that the format has going for it suddenly disappear.

Let's hear it for marketing! Yay!

And now again for speculative opinion! Yay!

Actually, the article states that the U.N. wants to have the DNS computers turned over to them. Which is interesting considering that would be ceding private property to a government organization.

The article speaks of handing over control of the servers. Man, I'd hate to be the IT guy in charge of that migration! Anyhoo, I don't think they want to move them anywhere, which leads me to the next point:

The US is hardly "doing as it pleases".

Sure, we can't exactly call them the DNS Nazi's yet, but the point in the article that I was refering to is that RNS distribution is heavily biased towards first world countries like the U.S. and the United Kingdom. I know, I know, no shit, we got tons of people, tons of commerce, why does Madagascar need a larger percent of the pie? Well, asking no one in particular, why should the U.S. decide? Should Best Buy tell Mom's Refridgerators what they can sell?

The article doesn't go into such detail, but I assume that the same people (as in people like you and me) are going to be operating the servers from the same location still if such a thing were to happen, but the U.N. doesn't want the U.S. to be able to tell them to go screw themselves when a constituent needs some help in attempting to improve their quality of living through technology, most importantly, the communications and commerce that are touched by it. Is the U.S. holding these people back? I don't know personally, but the U.N., with the EU's chiming, seems to think so. If the U.N. is the EU's puppet, I'll agree with you in that we got something to worry about here. I don't think that is the case though.

  7. Re:Talking to myself on U.S. Insists On Keeping Control Of Internet · · Score: 1

Fair point, but the U.N. isn't in cahoots with any particular country last time I checked, nor for that matter is it European-centric as you insinuated in the O.P..

Sure, the UN may be broke in many people's opinion, but it is still an arguably unbiased governing body for the participating world. The U.S., my country, developed what is now the internet, but I don't see how giving some oversight of the operations of a global network to a "global" organization is bad for the internet.

Does it say anywhere that the U.N. would shut down U.S. DNS operations and give it to someone else? I think the idea is that the U.S. should not be able to do as they please in this situation without any need to respond to outside concerns. I have to agree with that.

My big question is: what is the -actual- current status of WiMAX technology? Different sites have me believing different things and I can't find an exact answer to the question 'When will I be able to buy a WiMAX router and cards so I can remotely receive broadband?' When will WiMAX (802.16) be solidly standardized, out, and affordable? Or is it already there?"

Hopefully that helps save Slashdot's bandwidth for more news of the same importance.

I know Verizon is hedging on their EV-DO service, along with a few other companies, but I'm sure all of the rest that haven't made much investment into 3G will be all over technology like this that offers such a gross increase in bandwidth.

Your comment and the other replies to it are all correct, but there is one distinction to think about.

Now whether this is Microsoft's intentions I'm not sure, but the core OS likely won't have any more functionality added between now and Vista's release. The "meat" that people are waiting for in Beta 2 and subsequent releases are all applets and applications, not directly integrated components of the OS.

I could be wrong, but like you said, it doesn't make much sense that MS would call this a Beta with every intention to add critical pieces of the OS at a later date. While somewhat unrelated, it's also worth mentioning that Microsoft released Beta 1 of WinFS two days ago on the 29th to everyone's surprise, which doesn't work with the Vista beta, but installs as an add-on "component" in XP.
